Unlock iphone 4.1/ Downgrade baseband 5.14.02

Hi guys,
I am also a noob reg the iPhone 4. A friend of mine is gonna send it to me from US.
But, he said that no factory unlocked are available in the US.
So, have no option but to go for a locked piece.
Just want to know what's the situation now reg the unlock of iPhone 4.
Which version of OS is perfectly unlockable ?
Is it 4.0 or 4.1 or 4.2 ?
Also, should i keep the baseband version also in mind while getting it from US ?
How to find the baseband version ?
Finally, i am looking at a perfect combination of IOS and BB.
I dont mind if i am not be able to upgrade it later. It should work perfectly without any hiccups.

^ ^ 4.01 and 4.02. As of now, there are no apple shops that sell them. The only place is ebay.com but the prices there are too expensive. Canada is your only bet, if your friend plans on stopping or visiting that place.
