Yet another person who is upgrading.....:bleh:

I currently am on a P4 1.8 GHz (Northwood) and wanna play some games so after 5yrs of usage on this machine I've decided to buy a new machine.

I have a 19" Samsung LCD monitor so not gonna upgrade that. The CPU unit is the thing I'm gonna change totally so the specs I decided on are as follows: -

Processor E8200
Mobo Abit IP35-E
RAM GSkill F2-6400CL4D-2GBHK 2GB (1GB x 2) 800Mhz
HDD 320 GB (dunno which one)
GFX MSI 9600GT OC Edition 512 GDDR3
Cabinet CM Elite 330
SMPS CM Real Power 550W

Any notes... warnings.... alerts... please let me know

And yes am gonna wait for the proccy price drop :ohyeah:

seems fine, but get a 8800gt over the 9600gt, price diff. is very small and ditch the cm psu and get a corsair vx450

Appo: - Thanks for your reply man. Just some small doubts. There are OC and stock versions of the 8800GT which one to go for and also which brand. Does MSI have a availability issue in Pune as it was in the past. Also now that the GFX is changed to 8800GT will the Corsair 450W PSU pull it off. Coz I'm gonna add up 4 HDD's to the system eventually, and also some 2-3 fans around the cabby. Waiting for your opinion.

+1 for the corsair vx450w, sturdy high-quality build and runs very quiet.

avoid the gigabyte 8800gt/512 like the plague if you are a gamer/OCer (i have it) but its okay if you are on a bugdet and dont mind like a 10-15% lag in performance compared to other 8800s which are overclocked...

try to get the MSI NX8800GT-OC if you can find it, or an XFX if you can get it at a reasonable price...

i personally wouldnt spend extra on a special cabby (i dont overclock, so dont need the extra airflow), so i got the Circle cc715 cabby which looks nice and "industrial" :)

OK some modifications to the specs

Processor E8400
Mobo Abit IP35-E
RAM GSkill F2-6400CL4D-2GBHK 2GB (1GB x 2) 800Mhz
HDD 320 GB (pls suggest me 1)
GFX MSI 8800GT OC Edition 512 GDDR3
Cabinet CM Elite 330
SMPS Corsair VX450W
Any more suggestions......

Also I read abt the 8800GT not going with some boards. Is the Abit good with this GFX am scared that after spending some much if I end up with a board and gpu that is not compatible then I wud b fried :ashamed:

Both the Abit mobo and MSI gpu are popular, Im sure if there were issues, someone would have posted here or elsewhere on the net :) Heck, I was worried about my GigaByte 8800 with the plain Intel DP35DP mobo, but it appears to be working just fine - except for the low performance of the GPU (unless its just coz i got a plain mobo and Transcend RAM)...

I see you've bumped up to an E8400, is there any way I can convince you to get quad core goodness (Q9300 or Q9450) just for the coolness factor? :ohyeah:

For the HDD, check the Storage section (and the "post your hdtach scores" sticky thread) lots of oohs and aahs about single platter 320gb models giving excellent performance...

There shud not be any compatiility issues with the IP35-E + the 8800GT..
So go ahead.. :)

And make tat RAM the GBHZ rather than the GBHK; a li'l more expensive but overclocks much better with those Microns onboard the GBHZ.

Get a single platter 320GB HDD; This's wat u shud be looking fer:
Seagate Technology - Barracuda 7200.11 SATA 3Gb/s 320-GB Hard Drive

hey can you explain more about the gigabyte 8800 GT.... its got a good cooler..better than the MSI...so can be overcloked to the level greater than the MSI 8800 gt OC...wouldn't that give it the performance better than a MSI factory OC

@ronnie: It does have a cool-looking zalman copper cooler, and the factory settings are 700/920/1715 for core/mem/shader but I got a score of about 12000 in 3dmark06 when others are getting 14000 with their other brands. Maybe its because of my stock 2.4ghz q6600 while others have 3ghz E8400s and my standard transcend 800mhz ddr2 at 5-5-5-18 and ordinary intel dp35dp mobo.

When I try to raise the GPU clocks even slightly, 3dmark06 goes blank screen right at the start. Now I am not sure if its a GPU issue or a mobo/ram issue. I doubt its a heating issue. Maybe I should fiddle with the voltages too :)

But to be safe, either wait for someone else (I have asked Kalesh to bench his same card on his different mobo and better RAM) to post their results, or just get an MSI 8800 OC card :)

Tats d reason u're getting a low score.

Crank up tat Q6600 to the 3.6G mark and it'd easily beat the E8400.. :)

Dont use the oc s/w tat came with ur card; use rivatuner instead.

@gannu: well i downloaded SetFSB (latest version has support for my Intel DP35DP mobo) and clocked my CPU to 3g, RAM was at 1000m and 3dmark06 crashed halfway thru, then went into the bios to set RAM clock to 667 (so that in Windows/CPUZ it would show running at about 835mhz) and 3dmark06 ran completely - score 13,700 !!! woohoo :)

So maybe the GigaByte 8800 is not a bad card, it's just my non-overclock-friendly components (mobo/ram etc) and my inexperience with OC-ing...

^^^The GB is a good card esp with the Zalman cooler onboard..

Now get hold of a TRU'E' with a 120mm fan;
Rev up the proccy to 3.6G;

Rev up the clock/mem speeds of the card;

Run 3dM'06 n be taken fer a treat!! :)

PS: Still 13600 is a low score.. There's scope fer more.. ;)

@vishalrao

do you have any idea whr can i get the same card GB 8800 gt with zalman cooler in mumbai.....for the same price

@ronnie: apparently apollyon's dealer AMI/rupam has branches in all major metros, PM apollyon for details or call rupam/AMI at 24456693, 24436479 to ask...

@gannu: the 13700 score was probably coz i had to downclock my RAM back to 800 coz it crashed at 1000! i guess i could get into the OC thing, need better coolers, bigger/more spacious cabby, and change my standard 800mhz RAM for some OC-friendly ones, but im not that enthu for it (im a working stiff) happy with stock settings :P

@Vishalrao: - Dude if the proccy rates come down to 8k post the Penryn release then I would consider it. But as gannu mentions the Quad core is the reason ur card is not delivering so maybe it maybe a E8500 but that is too costly ATM so lets see. And I'm trying to bump up the gfx not the proccy. Is it ok if I get the RAM I mentioned in my post because I'm no oc'er and wont venture to do it also. Actually its been 5 yrs since I've played a game thats y the 8800 GT :ohyeah: lets see how it goes. Rest all looks good I assume. Regarding the HDD there is a data recovery guy who told me that I should get a HDD which has more than one platter, but you guys tell me otherwise. Please shed some light or some pointer would be great too. Thanks for the ordeal you guys are going through for me. :cool2:

Good to hear. I was thinking about investing in 620HX, but it is very expensive. Will I need anything more than 450VX if I never use Sli?

Dont think so.. If u dont invest in an SLi setup, the VX450'll suffice..:)
