Hi Guys,

This is my first guide I meant to do it a long time ago. This is a small and simple guide to connect your debit card to a paypal account.

Why would you want to do this?
1. You dont have a creditcard and would like to buy something.
2. You have an international debit card and would like to shop online.

I first tried this procedure with my ICICI debit card but it dint work, you can still go ahead and try it. It worked with my Standard Chartered Debit card

To Begin the Process Click Here

Select Personal Account and Country and Proceed.

Fill up all those details and proceed again.

The process is rather simple put in your debit card number and when it asks you for the CVV number just put in 000.

Once this process is complete, your account will be in a limited status. Click on the verification button. (I cant remember the name clearly i think its expanded user program)

To make big purchases you can get your card verified by allowing paypal to charge $1.95 to your card. This amount is refundable on your first purchase. The transaction detail comes with a four digit number. Once you enter the four digit number in your paypal account you can shop to a max of $2500 at a time i think.

Please note that the verification number does not appear on the online statement that standard chartered provides. So when you get your statment make sure you have the right four digits.

You can call them and ask them for the four digit number. Once this is done all you need to do is visit a site that accepts paypal and enter your paypal id to make a purchase.

There is a list of shops that accept paypal here Please note that there are a lot of sites that are not mentioned in this list and still use paypal.

Also to receive money in your paypal account is free. So now you can begin your online shopping spree :) If you have any questions i will be happy to reply so just ask. Boom!

correct me if i am wrong but...

you can recieve money for free, but then you have to pay to take it out of the account. and also it has to be a US account if you need to take out money.

could you verify this?

@ pastrykunal

you have two options

1. Is to request a check. This is home delivery @ $5
2. Is to to transfer the money free of cost to a bank account in US

Getting money in your paypal isnt free. there is $0.30 - 0.50 fee + some other percent of transaction. not sure how much.

Sending money is free though. Additionally there is a 100$ sending cap if the account is unverified. Account which can be verified by adding a credit/debit card to the paypal account.

You can get money from paypal to your bank ac(Citibank), or get a paypal check only if the amount exeeds $150. There is another $2500 withdrawl limit though...lucky if you hit that :P

Thats Funny arya am i special that receiving money is free for me :) Im using a buyers account and its clearly mentioned Paypal is free for buyers on the homepage.

well if youre recieving money you would be a seller isn't it?? Of course refunds of items that you bought would be another way to recieve money but that would not make you a seller.

apart from this case, i dont think one can recieve money into a buyer account???

Well it may work, but if the debit card is issued in India and linked to an India based account (a rupee account), it is illegal to use it for such purposes. Check up the terms and conditions of your debit card first.

Uh..oh..might have missed that. I have a business account which i use to send/ recieve money. There are many limitations on buyers accounts though. its a great way to get money from phoren though. They take out around 10-15$ outta some 200-300$ transaction...still its way cheaper than Credit card gateways.

@KingKool

If you havnt noticed...most of debit cards are international. That means you can use them everywhere. Best are maestro cards. they come with verification number.

By such purposes, I did not mean international usage. I meant online usage. I talked about rupee account linked cards, because you get special forex cards which can be used in such a fashion, though only some backs allow that.

Actually, when you recieve money into your PAYPAL account, it's free if it isn't a premium account. But suppose you expect others to pay you via their CC through PAYPAL, you can't accept the cash unless you have a Premium account.

If you do upgrade to a Premium account, you lose a small amount of money from every incoming transaction.

Not to mention, you have to pay $5 for the Cheque to your account, and some additional charges etc.

I just transfered around $450 from my PAYAPL to my bank account, they deducted around $15 or $18, I don't recall.

It's still a great way to shorten the e-trading gap :p

if you have a free (verified) account there is nothing charged for incoming and outgoing transactions.(verified means you can enter your cc no and transfre refundable 2$ to paypal) However you cannot accept any cc payments in free account. Neither do you get accept donations api.

When you go for the premier account you can do all the above plus get 7 days support. But now sending money is still free the incoming funds are taxed at 0.3+some percent of transaction.

If you made a account as indian then you cannot have it transferred to US account. you can request a cheque, however be warned. The paypal cheques have been known to get lost midway. there are lots of cases all over net of Indians complaining. Best bet transfer the funds to a relative of yours in US, then use www.xoom.com (better than western union lower fees very reliable) to transfer money direct into Indian bank of yours or collect from the collection center :)

well looks like safin took care of the remaining questions. its just that paypal is quite a powerful tool to receive money from people around the world. I received $200 and theres no charge but lets see when i remove the amount how it will be done

hey sorry to dig up an old thread but i'm right now in canada and i have this icici travelers card which is basically a visa debit card which can only be used outside india. any idea if this will work and if its legal?

Hey Ashwath, trust things are well ;) Unfortunately, you can't use that card to shop online...

yea i know it cant be used online directly but i was wondering if it could be connected to a paypal account like mentioned in this guide and then used to buying stuff. just wanted to know if that would be legal :P

and yea things are great here.

It should work(better if it was maestro) and its perfectly legal. However you'll loose some money in currency conversion. where are you in canada? let me know if you need some sorta help shopping ;)

^i live in oakville near toronto.. how about you? are you in canada as well? oh btw my card is a USD card which means that my parents have to convert indian rupees to USD back in India and then load it into the card for me so I can access it anywhere in the world. all my transactions on that account happen as USD and there's no charge on conversion to CAD if i'm using the card directly, only if i draw cash from an ATM.
