Laptops Vaio VGN-CS27GJ or DEll STUDIO XPS 16

Hello friends ..
I am planning to buy a laptop . And I am in a situation where i cannot understand which one to buy .
According to my usage I have finalised these two models
Sony Vaio Vgn Cs27 and a Dell studio Xps 16
VGN-CS27GJ : VAIO CS : VAIO Laptop & Computer : Sony India
Dell Studio XPS 16 Laptop Details

Now both have their advantages and disadvantages

Vaio advantages
1. Has a great reputation.
2. Already using a vaio which works awsum.
3.Have heard no bad reviews of it.

Disadvantages of vaio
1.Don`t know if their after sale service is as good as dell`s is.
2.Cannot upgrade the system later on.
3.no return/refund policy
Dell advantages
1.Great after sale service
2.Refund policy
3.Except for a 3gb ram Which is DDR3 ram everythin is better then vaio.(vaio has a 4gb ddr2 ram)

Disadvantages
1.Have read all the review sites this piece has tonzz of heat problem.Even on the dell site and the lappy`s review section
people are complaining about its heat issues.
2.Slot loading disc rom.
3.Cannot downgrade it to xp from vista. Vaio can be downgraded also provides the drivers.

Now I am so much confused which piece to buy .
Would appreciate if frnds out here could assist me and throw some light on both the models.
And help me buy one nice and better lappy.

Dell studio xps 16 Rs 71k
Vaio Vgn cs 27 Rs 63k

+1 for dell.....regarding those prob....after sales service are poor in india.

if u have a friend in US ...get a Alienware ,if possible.

if u want dll , then better get dell studio 15.

I'd say go with the Vaio.It has a brand value,and an image,and true to the face,I've heard of no one having any problems with the Vaio model you've mentioned.

Though the XPS-16 did develop problems with the speakers and slot load DVD drive.The service at Dell is good though.That's not saying it's bad with Sony either.

Go for Sony.
 
i will go with viao reason 1 I my self bought xps 16 face lots of issues due to its screen blocking 85% of heat vent and make its daam hot. Dell accepted it and said we agree its a design flaw and we can give you full refund 100% i take it and now i am happy cos this thing can creat hell lot of issue in future so better think once again before buying xps16

Seems like dell studio xps 16 seriously has heating prblms and its not a hype which Dell Sales Executive tells me is created by rivals.
My only reasons for considering dell were
1)Backlit keyboard
2)3gb DDR3 ram
3)512mb dedicated graphics
4)Good After sales support ( For one year )
after one year it is gonna be chargeable .
5)16.1 inch screen
6)Hdmi and infrared
7)Return/refund policy
8)2mp camera

Now my reasons for avoiding Dell
1)Heat is a serious issue. And its everywhere on every forum on every review site.
2)Slot loading has a prblm.
3)Ati Radeon doesn`t hv Hybrid SLi
4)Battery is not so good.
5)32 bit windows vista which cannot be downgraded to xp .
Also there are no drivers for it available . And once u downgrade it to xp dell won`t touch the machine.
Its clearly stated on their site.
6)Is heavy I need portability in a laptop which vaio offers.
7)Studio seems to be more on the side of a gaming lapotp instead of normal laptop for routine uses.
8)I can manage without hdmi infrared backlit keyboard and other stuff..

So lets see which company I settle on ..
Most probably its gonna be sony only :-)

I would say heat is an issue for this dell model, but unlike others i have had always had spot on service from dell. i recently broke (dropped) the monitor of my e5400, and next morning by 1 pm, new monitor, new hinges, new lid were shipped, and the dell guy had not just replaced the parts, did a full clean and service of the unit. best part is my warranty and service is for 3 years, so definitely worth it!

Buddy E5400 comes under the category of business laptops...
Business laptops don offer the config u get in sony cs 27 or dell xps 16..
IF u configure them to dis level then d cost is certainly an issue.

My father owns Dell Latitude D630. Which is an amazin laptop ..
Heating is no issue. Battery is amazin gives more den 3 hours of backup ..
Dah particular model xps 16 which i zeroed one seems to hv issues..

Studio 14,15,17 are out of consideration u shud see the keyboard which i dint like .. u press one button there is flex around it..
Then slot loadin drives r also a main concern..

Dell has dis tendancy or maybe some business tactic .. in which it doesnt offer a complete package in one piece.
what u may get in home and office laptops u may not get dah in business laptops and vice versa..
 
well yea apart from heat and few other drawbacks major one is battery and its really bad in backup. and this come with 1 yr warrenty and cover but buying extra cover and 2 yrs will cost aprox 16k extra means not worth at all. and with such a heating issues buying with just 1 yr warrenty is big risk and for all dont forgot the past like xps 13 and 1530

1. I just cited an example. We also have latitude, vostro & XPS models which have received equally good onsite support.

2. Config's in business laptops often are the same as std. laptops, it's just the body/ some components that MAY differ. Cost can actually be lower.

e.g. A E5400 - 2 Ghz C2D the T8000 one, 4 G RAM, 160 G 7200 RPM, 14" 1440x900, 9 cell (7 Hr backup), Touchpad and Touchstick, 3 yr onsite same day 4 hr support - costs us 60 K + Octroi.

e.g.2 A E6400 with same specs etc. for 67K + Oct.

Support has always been 1 phone call away.

Now, here's what you do. When you call up the dell sales, negotiate as if you are gonna buy, but they are just out of ur budget levels. Play smart long enough and dont collapse. They end up making offers that will be music to your ears. For the above laptop the first quote was 85K+.

3. If you have a business/ a close friend who is running a small business/ co. ask them to buy what you want in their name. Cos. often get 2/3 yr onsite support bundled in for no to very low extra cost, as well as better prices, as dell feels they will be regular SMB buyers. This tactic can get you good price & support, leading to super VFM.

P.S. Bill & delivery will be in co. name, so you will have to cite the same while asking for any support later on. Also your friend should be quite supportive to the extent of saying that you provide advisory services to the co. etc etc.

Negotiate hard and smart.

yes and best laptop 1530 got 4 motherboard changed in 8 months time and in end dell given opetion to choose from new laptop whats a best

Based on ur advice I am considering E5500 and E5400 laptops.
But if I buy any of the above I`ll loose on the following which xps studio offers
1)320 gb hard disk
2)DDR3 ram
3)dedicated graphics 256mb
4)back lit keyboard

But what I gain if i buy any of the latitude series
1)Windows xp is my need and not vista
2)3yr pro support and 3 yr full cover
3)Reviews around the web suggest its battery backup is also good.

I can manage without the 320gb hard drive and ddr3 ram and backlit keyboard.
But the only problem i m findin is latitude has x4500hd integrated graphics.
So will this be sufficient for games not high graphic demanding games atleast some old games nfs fifa counter strike as well..
Pls suggest..

The coincidence being I myself want to buy a laptop and I zeroed in on these two exact models! I joined the community today to see if any related query been posted and voila!.... i found the exact question I myself was going to ask!

I will add some of my findings.
1. VAIO looks awesome... the keyboard is too damn nice. The Dell XPS model keyboards are still nicer than the other models by dell.
2. XPS has a better processor (P9600) as compared to P8600 of CS27G.
3. DDR3 against DDR2 (1067MHz vs 800MHz) (Dell can be expanded till 8 Gb).
4. NVIDIA 9400M against NVIDIA 9300M
5. 7200 RPM against 5400 RPM

Now the most important point for me is the sound. I need to record music and mix and render them. I tried recording on a Dell XPS and it was not of good quality.
I don't know about the sound quality of VAIO and this will make all the difference to me despite the other shortcomings of it.

Prices are almost the same. VAIO is a little overpriced I think for the config its supplying...

Though its not my post... can anyone still guide me to a laptop which gives good overall performance and with a GOOD soundcard? Thanks.

Does anyone know about the reviews on
VGN-CS36GJ/Jet black? This is originally available in crocodile edition but i got this in Black from Sony World. It costs the same as VGN-CS27GJ/C but with a higher processor and extendable RAM upto 8GB.

I got this by mistake so just wanted to check with u if i should exchange it again in sony world since i am not able to find any reviews on the same. The rest of the config is same as VGN-CS27GJ/C. Please advice as soon as possible.
