I was away for 3 months and when I switched on my Viewsonic 22' monitor (VA2226w) for the first time on my return, I noticed several dark spots on the screen. I contacted viewsonic customer care and a service engineer came today. He said that they were bad pixels but the company will replace the monitor only if there are more than 22 bad pixels. There were 10-11 dark spots on my screen and he refused to count the very small ones. I am attaching 2 pics taken from Nokia E5 (5 MP camera) where u can easily see the larger spots. My questions are:

1. Are those dark spots really dead pixels?
2. Do dead pixels come in varying sizes?
3. What is Viewsonic India dead pixel policy?
4. Will flashing high contrast image on my screen or other similar fixes worsen the problem?

What do they mean by 22? :S I guess the technician was an idiot or doesnt wanted to service your call.

If such baseless crap policies arise then people will shift to crt again.

Tomorrow dell will say, we will replace only if we find 99 dead pixels and so on samsung and benq.

I advice your better have a word of mouth directly on their hotline and dont disclose what that idiot told you.

And if they are so concerned about no. 22, then burn a match stick and make your own dead pixels as many as you want and place another call.:P

Thanks for your all suggestions. Immediately after he left, I did try to contact their hotline but it seems that their office was closed today. I did emailed them though and mentioned what their service engineer told me.

I am not sure whether actually the pixels are dead or stuck or the protective screen has gone bad.

Your screen has a total of 1680 x 1050 = 1764000 pixels. Judging from the images, the count of dead pixels is a lot more than 22. Each and every pixel is counted individually, not the clumped up splotches.

The pixels are all of similar size and you can actually see them individually if you are close enough. The difference will generally be more noticeable in text using small aliased fonts.

Check whether actually the pixels have gone bad or the screen/protective coating is just dirty. Try to get a closeup shot of any big spot using manual focus of a digicam.

Flashing high contrast image on my screen is used to fix pixels which are 'stuck'. Don't try this for now, a replacement is a better option.

You have a lot more defect in the screen than is acceptable and should get the screen replaced.

get this to further identify more individual pixels gone bad.

to all those who are crying about the figure 22. IIRC Dell has a figure which is somewhere between 5-10. Benq had something between 10-15. Dell's premium displays (Ultrasharp ones) have a zero pixel defect policy though. 22 is not such a huge number too, but they are supposed to count individual pixels.

First time i'm seeing such huge spots. They actually look like dried water spots. Did you try wiping the monitor with a damp microfiber cloth first?

@pr0ing: Well, the service engineer told me that they were bad pixels if I can believe him. If the screen/protective coating is just dirty, can it be cleaned or do i have to get my monitor replaced? I will try to get a friend's digicam and take a better photo and post it here. The dead pixel buddy software did not tell me anything new.

@6pack: You could be right. The whole family was away for 3 months and it was raining very heavily during that period. When I returned, the spots were there. No, i have not used any damp microfibre or any other cloth to clean. I had just tried with a dried cloth.

On 24th Aug, I got a reply from the Viewsonic team:

"Dear Valued Customer,
Thank You for contacting ViewSonic India Technical Support.
We have escalated the RMA Request to our respective Service Center for immediate closure; it's pending due to parts unavailability. Please expect closure soon."

Also I have uploaded better quality pics taken from a digicam.
