Going to place an order for a WD 1TB Black (FALS). Quoted Rs 6.9k. The WD 1tb Green (EADS) is about 5.9k. Both have 32mb buffer.

Is it worth spending 1k more for a FALS drive? It will be used for storing games, movies, etc

When is the 500gb platter drives (WD or Seagate 1tb ) expected to arrive in India ?

Thx in advance

afaik even though wd claim the greenpowers are variable rpm they are in fact 5400 rpm whereas the black are 7200 rpm. havent checked if there is any difference in performance though.

if you are going to use it as a dump drive get the greenpower, will run cooler and probably last longer

^^ huh ?

WD500AACS is 7200 RPM which is more silent than either of the Blue caviar or the Black Caviar.

Black Caviar would definitely make much more noise than the Green one , although there will be a minor performance increase.

Just the buffer in the Black is - 32MB and in the Green Caviar and Blue Caviar it is 16MB.

Cheers

+1 for greenpower. if you really want to spend 7K, add some 500 more and get a 1.5tb :P

^yeah the 500gb ones could be , but am pretty sure that the 1tb ones are 5400rpm

WD10EACS is 7200RPM , just googled it.

Search and have a look. :)

Although , some sites say it may vary from 5400RPM to 7200RPM , but most of the decent ones have just stated it as 7200RPM. (They may be unsure i guess) ;)
So basically it's just 7200RPM.

@Sunnyboi - 1.5 tb seagates are having firmware problem ...or has it been solved? :S If yes, then I would prefer 1.5 tb seagate over 1tb FALS. Else I will get the green ones (EADS) from WD :hap2:

How are anyone able to identify the speeds, when WD themselves havent disclosed anything ?

Nevertheless the performance of most of the green drive is not bad as everyone thinks, me thinks its a better deal then the black ones.. considering te overall cost of ownership. Power consumption included, longetivity taken into consideration etc..

Hmm although it seems likely, they have based their theory on sound emission. Now WD also claimed they have improved their noise emission, so it can be a possibility that lower sound (vibration) can be because of better engineering design and not necessarily spindle speed.

In any case, bottomline performance is decent enough, and given the low power requirements make these drives well worth it..

not worth it....

Rather spend on 1.5TB Seagate 7200.11 32MB cache @ Rs.7600

If its for data storage then definitely go for wd Green,or is using it as main hdd for OS and game installations then 7200 rpm drive wud be better.

I have both 1TB and 1.5TB from seagate, the 1.5TB is from december 2008. Its working fine now, havent attempted any frmware updating.

It seems based on my conversation with the dealer, he has already ordered a 1 tb FALS drive from his suppliers. Now, he wants me pay up for 1 tb drive (6.9k).
It is true that I had expressed my desire to buy the FALS drive seeing the reviews and I had placed an order with him. However, the price made me hesitant. After, checking up with TE members' opinion, I changed the order to a Seagate 1.5tb @ 7.7k. The dealer says no and to pay up for the first order :(

Now, the question is what do I do?
