As told by my friend Charleson :

" I had sent a WD 120gb WD portable HDD for a replacement on 14 Feb 2010 and still awaiting the damn HDD. This is the whole story :

The next day i got the e-mail for WD RMA SUPPORT that my RMA NO. is 81744184 and the concern person will pick up the faulty HDD for my residence.

The courier guy form GATI COURIER SERVICE came on 22/2/2010 and the HDD was received on 23rd the very next day.

*Now my real ordeal start from here, every day I check the WD RMA support site TO SEE MY RMA STATUS as "THE PRODUCT IS NO RECEIVED" but the funny thing is that Gati tracking number shows that the product was delivered on the very next day on 23/02/2010.

When I inquired WD on phone service (which you get throught very rarely) the reply that I got(on phone) was that there's is a 1.problem in the data base or 2.the server is down or 3.the site is under mantaince. This all changed on 4/3/2010(28 days later) when finally there was an official entry in their database.

BUT THIS WAS THE SECOND PHASE OF MY ORDEAL. When asked when will they send the replacement their reply was ironic *there are no hard disk left of my model*.

43 DAYS LATER

BUT this change on 19/03/2010 when they dispatched the HDD and the told me the Hdd will reach my place in two-three days. Well the HDD didn't reach my place again.

My hdd arrived and was sent back as WD didn't have the brains to write the correct address  I'd sent them. So I called them and made them realize how stupid they are and their reply was they cannot help as the hdd has not yet reached to them so they cannot do any thing.

48 Days and still counting

They recieved the HDD on 23rdMarch and the same day it is dispatched again but without a tracking number.

60 GODDAMN DAYS :@

Today 4/4/2010. I have still no recivied my hard disk. So I checked up with Bikey and he advised me to post a thread regarding this. If anyone knows serious contacts with WD please share, you can also share tactics that I should use do make em pay for this torture of 60 days.

To CHECK THAT I AM NOT LYING MY RMA NO. 81744184 PHONE NO. 9773405045

CHARLESON "

Well this is the whole story till now. I thought WD had good RMA service but this an eye opener. I think for now we should stay away from WD's HDD's. GOD I have 2 WD's with me(fingers crossed).

I think we need to care of WD's miss behavior TE style. So please do share your ideas and views.

Have a nice day.

its easy... go to their office where u send the HDD and FCuk them off show them the GATI receipt and tracking number so they can track and ask them to sign all this in a letterhead if possible else u will file it to consumer Court with heavy penalty

Just send a complaint letter with copy of the receipts etc by registered post to the WD guys. That usually gets people to respond properly.

If you think wd rma sucks, then you should try to figure out what the rma policy is for the Samsung guys. Their site doesn't even have the new models listed in the site for product registration.

That what's happens with most companies in India. Initially to earn a good name they start with good service which eventually falls to usual low standards.
WD was good, but now lots of complaints are coming for its RMA.
Seagate RMA standards are neither very good nor bad, ok, but it is maintaining it.

WD S*cks indeed !

Had sent my WD Green 1TB for RMA on 25th Feb & still getting excuses like "That particular model is not in stock" !?

Ask your friend to talk to someone higher up in WD support. Having the same model is no excuse. I've been upgraded to a Velociraptor when RMAing a 1st Gen Raptor. Dozen others have also been upgraded to faster/ bigger drives by Seagate, though I got downgraded once. Fixed that by escalating the case. You can ask the support guy that you want to escalate the case and talk to a higher up. Do try that.

Btw, the RMA+Phone number combo is showing an error "The number you entered is not a valid RMA # ". Maybe a typo in your post.

WHAT? why is everyone saying 50 days etc. I once went to Seagate service centre to RMA my HDD and got replacement inside two weeks time. That was really really fast. I kind of dropped the HDD but there were no questions asked. They just replaced it.

I also prefer dropping the hdd ina service centre rather than waiting for courier to pickup and return. Further at service center you can catch hold of some one to discuss your case.

Does the customer have the option of dropping & collecting the HDD to a service Center or it is decided by WD themselves ?

Just for my knowledge as I have just bought a WD HDD but never had the occasion to RMA any HDD in the past.

Any service center in Bangalore ?

Nope...U need to either courier urself or arrange for a courier pickup.

I sent my HDD just 5 days back...Hope it comes back in 2 weeks:(

My WD 640AAKS died on me a few months ago....they didnt have the same model in stock. They sent a 750GB model within 7 days....

the problem occurs when u sent the latest model for RMA... Like my case . I sent a 1.5TB 64MB cache EARS for RMA. now, if they don't have stock they can't even gimme a upgrade as 2TB is a bit far fetched and huge upgrade to even consider

There shouldn't really be such issues with WD RMA. Their RMA updates on the site isn't very up to date .The status of HDD received by WD was updated 1 month after I received the actual replacement .:P

Everytime there is any delay from their side , I just shoot a mail to wddirect.india@wdc.com. With 1-2 days I get a reply from someone at higher authority and I also get a call back from WD Delhi when I leave my number in the mail .

On both occasions Ive been upgraded to better drives .

1) 640GB AAKS picked up next day of RMA registration and 1TB WD Black 1001FALS sent the same day of HDD pick up.

Total RMA time :5-6 days .

2)1TB Green picked up 2 days after registration and 1TB WD Black 1001FALS sent 5 days after pick up(delivered to WD).

Total RMA time : 12 days including weekend.

Try sending a mail to wddirect.india@wdc.com.If you don't get a reply , let me know .Will forward you contact details of 2 people who are at the top level at WD India. :)

WD replied, my friend got an apology call from WD the very next day I sent WD an email. Today he received a 250gb portable HDD(instead of 120gb one) and with it a formal apology letter. So I would say WD came out good after all the trouble they gave.
