I always follow this method. This is the safest of all the methods.

though watching directly with special filters and goggles will be thrilling, but who knows when things goes wrong?

Pinhole projection:
The simplest safe way to view a partial solar eclipse is to watch the Sun's image projected onto a piece of paper. Poke a small hole in an index card with a pencil point, face it toward the Sun, and hold a second card three or four feet behind it in its shadow. The hole will project a small image of the Sun's disk onto the lower card. This image will go through all the phases of the eclipse, just as the real Sun does. Experiment with different size holes. A large hole makes the image bright but fuzzy; a small hole makes it dim but sharp.Read more...

But to watch the diamond ring,u should definitely need special goggles or filters.

the welders goggles are cheapest and best for it.

^ see that site - NASA and many more big corporations have brought from them too.

edit: dont know where to get in our country. maybe ask some optician if any such glasses for viewing solar eclipse is available.

edit2: no.14 welders glass (anything less than that is harmful) is considered safe for viewing. should be able to get it from a hardware store.

There is an annular solar eclipse on Jan 15 2010, which will pass thru most of Tamil Nadu and Kerela.

And other annular solar eclipses in 2019, 2020, 2031, 2074 and 2085

In 2034 a total eclipse will pass thru Siachin Glacier

So this indeed is a rare phenomenon.

The poor city of Bangalore saw its last total eclipse in 1498, and will see the next one in 2168

for more nifty details check NASA's eclipse website

On July 22 we are going to experience the total solar eclipse in India.

The eclipse will begin at 6:23 am in India and will cover Surat, Varanasi, Patna, Bhavnagar, Indore, Bhopal, Jabalpur and Allahabad.

India time is 5:30 + UT so the area where it says 0:55 on the map it will be 06:25AM here.

So in Surat it should start at 06:20AM

Totality is approx 5 mins long so dont be late ;)

So easy these days to sync to atomic clocks.

Well ,I'm planning to go either to Patna or Bhopal ??

how is the weather of patna these days? partly cloudy ???

I will go with my telescope and other filters + camera adapter :)
anybody ready to come with me ??(I'm in Delhi )

You need an accurate weather report, given we dont have supercomuputers crunching at this info they are only good upto 1 day or so and often they even screw that up !!

Its just too damn bad this happens right in the middle of the monsoons :(

^^ Exactly. As luck would have it, for the past 3 days it is absolutely dark through most of the day, and sometimes it just starts raining cats and dogs here in Indore. I just hope it would be a clear morning on the 22nd.

Regarding how to view :

YOu can get solar glasses or fliter whatever you say from planeturum for Rs 15-25 only

Don't use X-ray flims ,smoked flim etc except for the recommended filters .It can be dangerous .

you can see the total eclipse without any filter or you can se it naked eyes .Its safe to watch the totality only.

I have seen one total solar eclipse in 1995 ,when I went to rajasthan -bharatpur .

^^^ I have seen the 1995 Solar Eclipse.
That was one moment worth remembering.
However the clouds are sure going to play the spoilsports...no rain that day..pray. or not...?

Patna will be the better choice.
Varanasi is even better.
