The fault is not with the app developer.

Phones age and the requirements of the OS and Apps change. If whatsapp use to run fine on your device 2 years ago does not mean it will do the same now. Apps move forward and your hardware is the same.

Agreed to obvious point that optimization will move forward to newer hardware. Point here was that with update containing additional features, WhatsApp became quite heavy; which is expected. But earlier version without those features on same iOS 7.1.2 was usable.

The biggest change is not in the user side but at the server side.

Whatsapp encryption has changed heavily in the past year or so. From being the easiest to crack to being one of the most secure. Could be a reason?
