One of my good friends is in US for 3 months. He has given me a budget of < $50 for a gift.

So, i want to get a Nvidia 8600GT. He'll pay $50 as a gift and i'll pay the rest.

So, which 8600GT card should i buy from US? I have read numerous posts about the Galaxy 8600GT OC version but couldn't find it at amazon.com or newegg.com.

I have a Zebronics 400W PSU. Will this be sufficient for 8600GT?

Also, i'll be buying a 20 or 22 inches LCD in a few months. Will the 8600GT run the newer games at medium or low resolutions? and can i play on the LCD at lower resolutions?

I plan to buy a Nvidia 9800 series card and a better PSU in future so this 8600GT will suffice as a temporary solution and that's why i don't wanna buy a PSU as yet.

Kindly help me:S

how about the eVGA 8600GT? also, i guess u shud upgrade ur psu, ask ur friend to get a good grade psu from the states itself.

I will suggest u to buy 8600GTS instead of GT huge performance difference
and who said that to you? 8600GTS is a total waste of money, first there is not much of a difference in FPS and second you can overclock your 8600GT to very close levels of 8600GTS.

I wanna go for a 8600GT for the time being, as i have already mentioned that i'll go for 9800 series and a better PSU in future.

@Aces170, i can go only for a Nvidia card, as i would be running GNU/Linux too and everyone knows abt ATI's GNU/Linux drivers.

and guys, is my Zebronics 400W PSU sufficient for 8600GT? I don't wanna upgrade my PSU now :(

U can overclock it very close to 8600gts but u cant match it.And u r forgetting u can overclock 8600gts also :P Anyway personally I will never buy 8600 series.I will either go with 7900 or 8800 they are better bang for bucks

Yes it will be sufficient for ur 8600gt !

Thanks bro! I have almost finalized the MSI one. It has the following benefits:

1) Awesome price ($109 on newegg, $10 mail in rebate)

2) Factory OC, so good performance

3) Runs cool...

I'll get it after 2 months, i'll tell my friend to order it now and try get a mail in rebate as well. If it doesn't work with my existing PSU, i'll get a new one which supports Nvidia 9800 series.

BTW, my other query in still unanswered: Is it possible to play properly at lower resolutions on a LCD?

see this totally depends on what games ur playing at what settings, for the most current games you should be able to play them at medium settings on lower resolution at comfortable frame rates.Dont expect to get even decent frame rates for upcoming dx10 titles.

ok, that's fine with me for the moment as i'll spending only around Rs. 3000 for 8600GT. Will get the 9800 card and a better PSU in future.

Nvidia 9800 series :S :S :hap5:

U haven't heard of it, here it is:

BTW, how much power will the 9800 series card take? Will the Coolermaster Extreme 600W (available for around 3.5K in india) be suitable for it?

Dont buy Coolermaster if u love ur graphic card. They are not good at all in fact Antec 550 also suks here is the link Stress Test: Power Supplies Under Full Load | Tom's Hardware
Get Corsair or Seasonic. As seasonic is not avail in India get Corsair.Corsair uses same Seasonic model used in this test with some paint job and small modification.

But the link u have mentioned is only for Antec. What's wrong with Coolermaster? I think it is the only affordable 600W PSU in India.

@ Montylee Get EVGA ... But if your friend is taking that card get 8800 GTS 320 Mb rather than 8600 cause 8800 GTS is good as you play games too :ohyeah:
