I'll be starting work soon and need to open a bank account.

I have an account in Syndicate bank but I dont like it.

I want to open a savings account in any of the big banks. ICICI, Citi, anything.

I want to know which is the best right now.

I'll want internet transactions, etc... I guess ATMs are not a problem now as you can draw money from any ATM without any fee. Am I right?

What are your opinions on this? I am looking for opinions from you guys as most of you use such accounts on a daily basis.

Personally, I have something against ICICI so I would prefer Citi. But if ICICI's service is way better, I would choose that.

HDFC has been good to me - but i think third party transfers are easier/faster in ICICI (i personally wouldn't know - haven't used TPT much)

Would be great if people tell the minimum balace required to be maintained in those banks aswell while opening the account... I too have be facing issues with that...

as long as the account is a salary account most banks allow zero balance.

also, since ur gonna start working, hang on for a bit, ur employer might themselves hook you up with a bank.

personally i would avoid icici for the brainless charges they level for everything.

axis netbanking is down a bit too often for my liking.. but when it aint, it works well.

not too sure if the withdraw at any atm thingy has been implemented yet. here in mumbai axis has the best atm network. by far.

SBI is good :) it aint one of your flashy places.. but with all the revamp nd stuff they've become pretty darn good. dunno about how good their online facilities are.

hmm few days back my dad opened a account with Kotak Mahindra

and he is really impressed with the services compared to ICICI and Citibank .

they provide lot of special privileges tosome accounts.

for eg- they come to your place and collect the cheque\payment etc

free of charge. looks quiet promising.

avoid ICICI really bad services..-heard it from a lot ..of people.

even CITI bank is good..but ICICI :no:

I have my reservations about ICICI bank, mainly because of their low levels of transparency with "misc" charges . I have been using HDFC bank Netbanking for a while now and they are pretty good with their services.

Im using SBI to transfer money to the states, its really cheap, but the servers are down most of the time. Not only does it affect checking balanaces, etc...but even sending money ends up being delayed a few days because of it. If their regular banking services run on the same servers, i wouldnt recommend it.

HDFC +1 more but i will say ask your local peeps rather than asking here.....since their are 2 HDFC my side and the first one with which i was tied they used to respect u depending on the money in your account(plus i asked a person to show me managers office to complain and that idiot looks a customer in me and start selling credit card to me)....i shifted to another which is more nearer to my house and so far not much probs and now all members in my family has account from same branch.....

so its better to ask your collegue i would say....

.Also Having an account in SBI has advantage being a govt bank....for future house buying drafts and lower rate...but u know how they work......but still i too might open a future account their for safe purpose(lower rates)

+1 to HDFC. Avoid ICICI, unless you need people to make cash deposits in your account.

Citi.. well, they seem to be going bankrupt any moment, they've started selling global holdings all over, so I wouldn't really be too confident to open a new account with them.

Besides, branches are VERY limited, NO branch in the whole of Goa! :O

SBI would be a pretty good bet.

for salary accounts citibank/hdfc/axis bank can be great but when you want a account simply then i dont think there will be anything that can beat SBI in both minimum balance requirement or even service charges.

another one for hdfc ...although my other account is at idbi ...but have my personal accounts at hdfc :D

Everythign about Kotak mahindra Bank is good. Most shocking for me, EFTs happen within one day :O sent money afternoon, recieved in ICICI account same day evening. KMD n aces can vouch for this.

plus i can withdraw money from any atm with visa for zero extra costs :P

ofcourse this is a salary account. dunno how general accounts will be :P

ICICI has been good for me so far
They tend to recruit jokers, but their technology and CRM systems are well setup...

bear in mid though that both Citi and ICICI will give you a hard time when it comes to customer care when it comes to a customer with low average balances (since you are just about to start work)

HDFC may not be a bad choice in that regard

SBI if u need:

Flexibility with more no of branches and ATMs than any bank anywhere on earth; :P [10k and counting];

Decent online banking service;

3rd part transfers;

and if u dont care:

abt the lamers there; :|

abt the server downtimes which happens sometimes;

If u've any problem concerning an individual in the bank, directly report to the Chairman; :D He'll take care of the rest; :P

I've personally sued a guy in Ernakulam Main Branch when he refused to comply with me and made me wait for 2 hrs in order to open an account; In the end I blasted at him left-n-right and left; personally drafted an e-mail to the chairman and sent it to which his PA called me back upon receiving it and said the issue was taken care of; I went again and the a/c was opened in a matter of minutes; :D The guy apologised;
