@vijaycool

sometimes a person ends up buying old stock....

so would also suggest find your drive volume and try flash your firmware... you dont have anything to loose anyways....

it worked on my one drive a while ago..

rest my experience all drives at max run for 12-15 months... and gut feels says its dust which destroys it...

Guys, quick question: which one of these is the better buy?

LG 20X IDE or Sony 22X 7220A IDE

Both cost exactly the same - 1.1K. I don't need a SATA drive and these seem to be the only IDE options available.

Am I the only one who has been happy with his liteon drives ?

boy, cant believe the same thing can happen 5 times :P

the sony AD 7220 is a liteon drive, an evolution of the 7190. they look a bot cheap and are a bit noisy. otherwise they work quite fine. I have both :)

You are

Is it just me or Do manufacturers intentionally make a product go kaput a few months after the warranty expires???

^Maybe the lens used has an average lifetime wrt discs it may burn. :ashamed:
So some who write a lot may see one go bonkers within a year- those who hardly do may get better life.
A couple of my old drives that still work good after more than 2 yrs have been primarily used as ROMs- Sony 810/820 and BenQ 1640/1650.
But liteOns are something that died even after burning only 8-10 discs over 6 months.
Even the motor started to squeak after 6-8months of almost no use. :S

My liteon is working fine since 3 years, no issues whatsoever (beside some "coasters") :)

I / My roomies have burnt hundreds of DVDs on it, including those to play games on PS2 / XBox (there was a time when I was the only one with a DVD writer among 3 people).

But my new mobo is having problem with IDE connections, so will go for a SATA DVD drive in some time. Will go with one of Bikey's suggestions I guess, Liteon doesn't have good reviews recently.
