i ordered from amzaon because i wanted it to arrive as fast as possible. but the 8100 bucks offer from shopyouworld on icici cad is defintely attractive. global ebay has ridiculous prices for kindle 3.

well, the so called free books are $2 purchase for indian users if bought from kindle store. you can very well change the country to usa in your amazon and then it will be come free. i had downloaded treasure island that way.
but, then y not sure the so many other free sites if you are downloading the files via usb. the kindle books are not really well formatted atleast the free ones. Better is get the books from gutenberg and load them onto kindle.

ebooks will tend to more expensive than the paper books in general as far as i have seen.

I'm toying with the idea of getting a Kindle but could the owners clarify a couple of things about the book pricing -
International Kindle users: here's how Amazon is screwing you - Is this still an issue?

Apart from that how does a book's Kindle price compare to the book prices here (I usually buy Paperbacks from Flipkart).

I just placed my order at Lynx. But since the Amazon Kindle is out of stock, it will take some time to reach me. As soon as I get it, I will definitely post a review.
How much is lynx charging for the kindle?

Hey buddy, congrats for the purchase...

I will have my own reader for my own in a few days. Thinking abt getting:

1) Sony PRS 600 with lighted cover, ac charger - $130 (second hand, but only used for 5 days) or for $159 at amazon new
2) Sony PRS 900 - They are selling for $180 at frys. Lets see if I can have someone reach them for me
3) Sony PRS 650 - $227 + whatever for cover + light - (10% discount because I know someone who works at a target store in US)
Get a review done or at least a show off...... How are your pdf working on it? And is there any difference when you convert it from pdf to mobi?

avoid the sony prs 600. had seen with a friend, and comparing that with the kindle, it seemed to have almost the finish of a mobile phone screen. ofcourse, the print is prety good, but the glare is something that i didnt like too much.

prs 650 is pretty good, but then it is pricey.

Yeah, but that can be taken care of tilting the screen a littile bit... I have done my research and I cant find anyhting suitable in the price range.

Why not Kindle: Coz it can not take notes with a stylus. I am not buying a reader just to read novels, but to read my tech and MBA books too, so note taking capability with a stylus is a must

Why not Nook: Coz it cant do landscape

Why not PRS 650: Coz including the cover its coming out to be $244 after a 10% discount. Thats too much for me.

And I know that Kindle 3 has the best screen atm, but then, we all are supposed to make compromises, aint we?

well yeah ofcourse. every one has different requirements. for note taking and stuff kindle will suck big time. though the marking out passages part works like a dream here

Any chance of the prices crashing around Christmas time?

Nook is ~10$ more than the K3 right now with supposedly inferior(;) hardware. Bound to go down a bit, you would think?

PRS 600 seems to have lesser contrast and more glare, 650 is bound to be on a bit of a premium, the Kindle seems to stand for the quintessential consumerist whorism like Apple products.. don't know much about the other E-book readers.

Anything else available ~150$ with support for most formats (like Nook)?

Another question, any place to source the Nook in India? Can the landscape thingy be added with a firmware upgrade? Is Nook2 on the horizon? If yes then for how much?

Two cents?

Read a rumour online that there might be a temporary price drop for the Kindle during Black Friday to $99. Now that would be a steal.

if you want to place a order from india, you will have to the shopyourworld.com, iccworld etc.

with kindle, i am not too happy with the pdf handling, but then there are a whole lot of format converters and at the moment i feel that is the best bet.

Black Friday deals are usually awesome and it would not surprise me if they really did offer the Kindle or Nook and other popular e-readers at hugely discounted prices.

Lynx is charging Rs 9350/- for the Kindle, But they use Fedex courier which is much costlier and faster than the US Postal services, that's why price is a little higher.

BTW, guys EC Media (the Wink guys) are launching a Rs 6000/- Ebook reader:

Just find the link to nook at amazon and ask Amarbir to get it for you. If it is available for shipping right away, he will deliver it really fast. Just post at his forum for quote, he usually replies immediately.

Here are some of the links:

Amazon.com: Barnes and Noble NOOK eBook Reader (WiFi only): Gateway

Do you think you will be able to take notes on a touch screen with a stylus. Very few people are able to do so because of lack of friction between the surface and the stylus. I suggest you try taking notes on any touch screen first.

I cant believe I jus ordered Kindle 3 with 3g..... :(
Don't worry dude, you wont regret it. You could never have taken notes on a touch screen. Touch screens are not meant for that. It's like trying to write on ice.

BTW, remember that you have ordered the best eBook reader in the world. Read the reviews, you will realize that it is the best where it really matters. Screen contrast, refresh rate.

congrats ! you probabbly have a very good device on your hands. and once you get used to kindle's buttons then note taking should be a breeze for most people.

You're welcome!!

btw, my Nook's screen has frozen. I had put it for charging and I think I left it overnight. Now, the screen is frozen. I tried all the various tricks mentioned on blogs and their forums, but to no avail. People have mentioned that letting the charge finish or overcharging it may lead to the screen freezing. Really disappointing.

I sent a mail to my uncle (who had bought it) requesting him to ask B&N whether they would do an RMA for me from here itself. Otherwise, I'll have to send it to my uncle who will get it replaced and then send it back to me. :(
