The good news is that Kindle is releasing Kindle 3rd generation in Aug at $189 and $139...... It should bring down the prices of Nook and Sony.......... booooaaaaaahhhhhaaaahhhhaaaaahhhhaaa
It won't be even available in India. In fact none of the Ebook readers are available here. Infibeam is just too expensive for what it offers.

Just ordered the new kindle wifi . Total came to 216$ (139$ + 20$ shipping to India + 56$ import fees deposit) . This import fees deposit would be partially refunded based on how much duty is charged .

Although it will be shipped on or after 8th September :@

See, the point is that the war has started. The prices will have to come down... I know none of the readers is available in India. I dunno how you got that impression... I was talkin about the international prices... And infibeam Pi is not even an opion.... Too expensive for what it offers...........

So, am hopin the nook to come down to at least 120 in the near future and sony prs 600 (which i am gonna get in october) to 139.... Sony should even introduce a $139 model having wi-fi.....

I just hope you are right. I have been waiting for an year for prices to come down and the Ebook readers to be available in India. But I hope they are available here soon.

See, the thing is that I am planning to get sony PRS 600 from Amazon. My girlie from US is visiting me this october. She can bring it with her. With all accessories, the reader is coming to 153 (yes 153 on amazon) + 26.99 for all the accessories (leather cover, light, ac adapter, car charger and what not) = 180.. = INR 8640, which is not a bad deal considering they are not available here in india at all.

Plus, I am hoping that the prices will fall by September as Kindle will start shipping on 8th September, I think. :)

Actually Amazon says the Kindle would ship on or before September 8.
Corrections are due. It ships August 27. However, the initial lots sold out and its now available for 'pre-order'. So based on the order backlog, if you order it today, it will be shipped Sept 8. Expect this number to increase as people keep ordering.

I gave in to the hype and bought myself an iPad. :)

I realized that I not only wanted an e-reader, but also a media consumption device. Music is still better off on the Sansa Clip+ though. Books on the iPad are a pleasure to read, videos are crisp (with proper encoding of course).

What's the difference between reading it on iPad and a Netbook? I guess both have LCD screens with backlight and will strain the eyes after some time.

In terms of reading, thats true. Of course the form factor in an iPad is much better, and theres always Apples UI interfaces to cheer you up.

2 things against reading on an iPad for prolonged periods are the backlit LCD and the weight of the iPad. I have noticed that after 15-20 min you need to rest it on a surface. It gets heavy :)

Once it has to be kept on a table, netbook, iPad or laptop are all the same. Ebook readers are a totally different thing.

Laptop and such are only good if you are a casula reader (i.e. read only 1 hr a day) or you read books with diagrams in it (technical papers, pdfs, doctor stuff etc.).. E readers are mainly targetted towards people who are into novels and heavy reading (read 3 or more hours a day). If you do heavy reading on the ipad or netbook or a laptop, you might eventually get used to the strain on your eyes and might not even notice it, but it will in the long run hurt your eyes. So, people like me who like to read english novels like crazy should get an ereader. Its definitely expensive atm, but nothing is more important than eyes, IMO. Let me put it this way, the extra money spent here will not go towards your eye doctor. :)

I am definitely a heavy reader. I recently read the last two novels of the Millenium series (Larsson) in two days flat putting in more than 12 hours a day. It was on my netbook and Nokia 5800 when I was away from the Netbook. I will definitely buy an Ebook reader when one is actually available in India.

ohhh good.... I have not been reading for a while now but I am more into Fiction e.g. Robert Ludlum, Tom Clancy, Jeffrey Archer, Dan Brown and such. Also, I read all comics from Archie and Tinkle to Frank Miller masterpieces.... like Sin CIty etc... And this is why I think Sony prs 600 reader will be the best coz It handles comics quite well as is apparent from this video. I think Kindle can handle it too, but I just cant trust the damn company and am not sure if they will remove the native pdf support in the future..

I am thinking of giving fantasy a shot and willing to read "the Hobbit" when I get the reader.. My girlie says that fantasy genre is actually good, so I am goin to try it.. :p

What kinda boooks do you guys read?

Is "The Golden compass" a fantasy genre? I read the "His Dark Material" series, which includes The Golden Compass" last week and I must say it was pretty good.

You should also read "Little brother" from Doctrow. It's kind of a techie novel, available for free. I liked it.

Does anyone who has ordered from amazon know how this import duty thing works ? I realize that if the customs charged are less than this , i will be refunded the remainder but what if the customs charges are more than this ?

Dont know about golden compass. I guess its a fantasy novel, but I may be wrong. Try Outlander series.. The 7th part just got released. Its by Diana Gabaldon.. I started reading it yesterday. It nowhere available in India, so please dont ask me where I got it from.. :p.... Its really good
