which is the best entry level digital camera?

If it is an Entry level requirement, Canon A 550-A590 Series is the best in terms of Ease of use, quality and handling. I ve gotten 5 A550s for my family and friends from Malaysia and Bangkok (1-2 years back 5.5K)and they are performing beautifully.

Canon, Olympus and Nikons are pure Cameras, u just need to get a hang of the aperture and focus etc and then your pic quality on the same camera improves dramatically...:cool2:

Esteemed knowledgebale people,
I was implying that these companies prime biz is imaging, but since an ambiguous word as pure can be interpreted differnetly, I admit my mistake. Still companies primarily focussed on cameras tend to have an edge. No Bias against Sony(Myself have a Sony Cybershot) I still like to use the canon more.

What Canon cameras have (and the other budget cameras lack) is a full manual mode. So those wanting to learn more about photography and those who like to tell the camera what they want rather than letting the camera do whatever it wants !

However at 5k you cant beat the Panasonic.

@rohitgaur - Kodak invented the camera. However they are superseded by a lot of manufacturers and are not in a dominiant position today.

Also Panasonic makes their own sensors and lenses so they have quite a bit of expertise in cameras.

lol.. chill man.. it just sounded funny.. your usage of the word 'pure' :P

About my specific reference to Panasonic in my post here, The previously suggested 'LZ-8' model has consistently been recommended not only by other gurus here on TE but also on numerous digital photography sites as being one of, if not, the best models in its price range.

well panasonic cameras wouldnt have a got a recognition it has got if it wasnt for the tie up with leica, wish they get a replacement for the FZ50.

LZ 8 is a nice cam and its manual mode is at par with canon 590IS.

Both of these 2 cams are good as a entry level camera. LZ 8 is for around 5k on ebay and 590IS for around 6-6.5k.

e-bay threads keeps updating time to time. I saw a cam for 6.5K around Thursday 5th Feb left it cuz it does not had EMI option :P

^^ another thing to note would be that the panny is WITH official warranty. i dont think, the canon is with warranty. (i might be wrong :ashamed:)

awright guys, everybody is a dedicated camera manufacturer......

anyways , back to the topic, has anyone used canon A470

ebay link is eBay India: CANON POWERSHOT A470 DIGICAM ! TAXES INCLUDED (item 110347865029 end time 13-Feb-2009 17:33:05 IST)

Antique junk by the standards of other manufacturers. Avoid!!! At that price you are better off with an LZ8 anyday. Here are the reasons why

The A590IS has a really sad 38-150mm equivalent lens which is slow f/5.5 at the long end. 38mm means its really very very narrow. The rear lcd is a puny 115k pixels. Anything over ISO 200 has severe noise. Spec'ed flash recycle time is a sad 10sec. Plus it costs 7 odd thousand in grey

Compare that to the panasonic which has a 32-160mm lens which is much wider than the canon. The lens though is equally slow at the long end. However its much sharper throughout the entire focal length range. The rear LCD is 230k pixels which is much nicer. The sensor is perfectly usable upto ISO 400 and can be switched to 800 for emergency. It supports exposure bracketing. The flash range is a massive 6.8m in wide angle and 3.8m in tele. Compare that to 3.5m in wide angle and 2.2m in tele for the canon.

To add to this, the panasonic is thinner, lighter and more ergonomic. It also costs 5k with warranty. To be honest, its not even worth comparing.

Need more reasons?
