I really like the new shell in Vista, for one thing. Microsoft has completely done away with the traditional file menu and address bar and it looks pretty sweet. Regarding OS X Leopard, I don't need to say much at all![]()
Linux still has a long way to go. I say this because it takes more than gimmicky 3D effects to make an operating system good looking. You can quote me on that. There are icons, there's the shell, how the menus are laid out, the overall theme etc. Each aspect has to smoothly fit into the overall design.
Let me make an analogy to explain this better. If you want your house to appear in a fine-living magazine, just giving it a new paintjob with expensive Italian paints isn't going to get it there right? There's all the furniture and upholstery, the tiling, lighting, etc.
Now take a look at the last screenshot that Darkstar uploaded. Sure the Apple CoverFlow like feature is pretty thanks to Compiz Fusion but look at the explorer shell itself! It's GODAWFUL FUGLY! Too many tabs, both horizontally and vertically, the ages old file menu, the terrible use of space, the list of unmentionables can simply go on.
It's basically new and fancy lighting in a medieval dungeon! Sure the lighting is slick, but it's still a friggin' dungeon.

1. Apple's early and ongoing commitment to design excellence may have its roots in a college course Steve Jobs took decades ago. Jobs audited a calligraphy class at Reed College (having officially dropped out after one semester). He became interested in the importance of attractive lettering, and has later said that if he had never taken the calligraphy class, "the Mac would have never had multiple typefaces or proportionally spaced fonts. And since Windows just copied the Mac, its likely that no personal computer would have them."
You are just quoting what steve jobs said..He became interested in the importance of attractive lettering, and has later said that if he had never taken the calligraphy class, "the Mac would have never had multiple typefaces or proportionally spaced fonts. And since Windows just copied the Mac, its likely that no personal computer would have them."
the one you quoted being #1..Sources: #1,2 and #10 - Steve Jobs commencement speech at Stanford University, 2005;
^Mac has a unique look.. Some like it some dont..For me all white is a big no-no--yet again personal opinion.
