Vista is best. Selecting files and navigating the computer and it even allows user to create favorite folders within his computer. Its the best till date.

Here is a small demonstration of Compiz Fusion 0.76 with Mandriva 2008.1 ..

Note : Everything is default except Wallpaper and Compiz Version/Plugin !

WOW! the wow is here not in vista will be downloading Mandriva and the compfiz soon!

OS X Leopard and Vista (in that order) are easily the prettiest OSes around.

I really like the new shell in Vista, for one thing. Microsoft has completely done away with the traditional file menu and address bar and it looks pretty sweet. Regarding OS X Leopard, I don't need to say much at all ;)

Linux still has a long way to go. I say this because it takes more than gimmicky 3D effects to make an operating system good looking. You can quote me on that. There are icons, there's the shell, how the menus are laid out, the overall theme etc. Each aspect has to smoothly fit into the overall design.

Let me make an analogy to explain this better. If you want your house to appear in a fine-living magazine, just giving it a new paintjob with expensive Italian paints isn't going to get it there right? There's all the furniture and upholstery, the tiling, lighting, etc.
Now take a look at the last screenshot that Darkstar uploaded. Sure the Apple CoverFlow like feature is pretty thanks to Compiz Fusion but look at the explorer shell itself! It's GODAWFUL FUGLY! Too many tabs, both horizontally and vertically, the ages old file menu, the terrible use of space, the list of unmentionables can simply go on.

It's basically new and fancy lighting in a medieval dungeon! Sure the lighting is slick, but it's still a friggin' dungeon.

apple's OS's - generally the initiator/inventor of eyecandy

their the ones with the super "out of the box" ideas / designs

linux - makes an open source version of it.,, which in turn is more flexible& customizable.

this is because, of the variety/flexibily available to designers.. its not one person/team designing all of em.. so expect the miss match..

vista - copy paste osx, lil changes here n there.. + vista tag+windows popularity

Linux platform is the most advanced after OSX.. .The amount of ICons and themes are available is beyond imagination.. Check kde-look ,gnome-look, xfce-look for more info..

Apart from that OSX is just another BSD .. I don't know why people spent in OSX if they can even better solutions. Vista makes more sense then OSX as it has more Software and Games support..

OSX isn't the OS ... Just waste of money for mere eye candy :P

@All : That's the most basic desktop that I had posted.. If I want I could have configured to more better looking OS :P

Edit : Few new effects.. The one with fire circle is known as Show Mouse onpressing Super + K wil locate Mouse position through Fire Circle :P and the second one is Expo.

I didn't mean to offend you or anything, man. Chill! This thread is is only regarding the best looking OS, and not about anything else, so why mention whether its good for software and games or not. We're isolating OSes here solely on their looks, so that was my only logic, nothing else.

Vista? I thought it was dead already :P

it is something like "people arent ready" phenomenon that happens with GNU/Linux. It is so better and superior that current generation of so called window$ addicts cannot understand a thing about GNU/Linux :P it will take 10 more years so that beta/betis of current windows mindlocked will understand the better GNU. :) {no offense ,but see this }

Show me a deal like OS X + a Mac Pro + Final Cut Studio. If I went the Avid way on Windows or whatever, I'd probably end up spending triple the amount.

OS X is more "hardcore" than many people think. Not just pretty effects. The only drawback is a shitty gaming experience.

OSX , Mac introduced most of the visual standards we take for granted on windows and Linux today. From fonts to docks to the scroll bars.

I find it amusing that so many find OSX "the most advanced" OS since it is derived from Linux.. or is in fact a shell over Linux. Apple is smart and know a good thing when it sees one, hence the switch to Linux...... it is far more robust and can be re-engineered just the way they like it.

People......Linux has actually been a round a long time and is nothing new, it has only hit the mainstream and become non-techie user friendly more recently. Most definitely the eye candy has improved, but then again so has Mac OS and Microsoft. I mean.... when Linux did not have the eye candy it has now... neither did Windows or the Mac. The only difference was usability and software availability for windows and Mac. I don't think anyone will disagree that windows 98 was not pretty, or Mac version (help me here) I think LC II Mac's or something.

Back in the day it was Unix before Linux, but they are as different today as Vista and Win98 and old mac and OSX. Even Unix, which is still alive and kicking, is so vastly different from it's older self.

The point is, they all have better Eyecandy than before, it will always depend on your needs and preferences. When software availability becomes more readily mainstream for Linux... .everyone will see major changes in this industry and Apple and Microsoft will be in for a bit of healthy competition... Since Linux is free, maybe some healthy competition will cause MS and Apple to start dropping their ridiculous prices for these operating systems and will allow people to choose their own without using the unfair business practices they do now..... but maybe they only do this because they are already starting to feel the bite :bleh:

Yeah right..And they invented the wheel and discovered fire and also the time machine app on their OS can actually transport u back in time..

^ you should google around :). While in college steve jobs took calligraphy lessons, thanks to which we have better looking fonts now.

1. Apple's early and ongoing commitment to design excellence may have its roots in a college course Steve Jobs took decades ago. Jobs audited a calligraphy class at Reed College (having officially dropped out after one semester). He became interested in the importance of attractive lettering, and has later said that if he had never taken the calligraphy class, "the Mac would have never had multiple typefaces or proportionally spaced fonts. And since Windows just copied the Mac, its likely that no personal computer would have them."

What I'm saying is, Apple gave emphasis to GUI design more than anyone else.

You are just quoting what steve jobs said..
Sources: #1,2 and #10 - Steve Jobs commencement speech at Stanford University, 2005;
the one you quoted being #1..

While windows might have copied few of mac's features, the same is true vice a versa albeit thrice as more..

yes i quoted him (doh) and it was from a speech, after all the mutual copying though, mac still looks better :P As far as linux goes, its not anything to rave about if you look past the desktop. Nautilus still doesn't feel half as good as Windows Explorer. But its awfully good for something thats free

We had the Browser Fight ( IE, FF, Opear ...)

Then we had the Linux and Windows Fight

Now we have 3 of them in the ring :O

Let me get some cola and popcorn .... now only if i had some marshmallows to roast over the flame war :D
