I'm thinking of ordering a Laptop from Amazon via Shopnship. Would I still have international warranty?
I've heard that HP doesn't provide international warranty on hardware defects, only software. But I've read that Dell,Toshiba,Sony provide international warranty without any hiccups.
Is this true? Any other details on this?

Only Dell and Apple provide decent international warranty support and that also you have to take care that the particular model is on sale in india so that spare parts are available with their indian service centres.

And you have to pay 14.7% import duty+shipping charges for importing any laptop,so keep that also in mind before ordering and yeah, forget about HP.

IINM even Acer and HP provides International warranty but there is some catch. I have a 3 yr. old Acer laptop which was purchased from HK and I recall noticing the International Warranty statement in the bunch of documentation provided. And I have a junior colleague of mine whose HP laptop bought from the US conked recently (motherboard to be precise) and the service centre replaced it at no additional cost. So yes, HP does have it but it may come at an additional expense while ordering. Asus and Lenovo laptops as well have International warranty IIRC.

Refer the link here for Acer's International Warranty policy - Acer Service & Support

^^That was some good HP service centre i guess, my friend's imported HP laptop had some MB problem and HP people behaved as if we took a dell laptop for service in a HP service centre

Dell and Apple offer trouble-free international warranty as its based on serial nos/service tags.

14.7% is steep. Bah. Dell is selling an i7 2.7GHz+6Gig+nvidia 540m 2GB+640gig HD+Full HD screen+Blu ray drive for ~Rs 58k in the US :O.
Add to that $80=Rs 3600 in shipping to india via ShopnShip.
14.7% spoils the fun :P

dell has international warranty...my 45 day old US bought dell xps had some problem and they fixed it in 4 days at home...

I've never ordered directly from abroad so I don't know how it'd work.
See, I'd pay the laptop's price to HP and they'll ship it to ShopnShip in the US. I'll pay the shipping cost to ShopnShip, and they'll forward it to me in India.

So what about the 14% or so import duty? Who will collect that? Will it be the ShopnShip courier guy?

Hm Interesting. This isn't related to the topic, but I'll avoid making a new topic for such a minor question.

Since duty on mobile phones is very low, can't we make Amazon ship the 'under contract' AT&T/Verizon etc phones (which are available for very cheap) via ShopnShip?
There obviously is a loophole in this plan, but I can't think of what it is.
