Hmmm....

Amazon seems to have better ratings/reviews for the netgear than the linksys

I own TWO DG834Gs and they're crap. Signal doesn't propagate more than two rooms away. One of them keeps dropping the Link with my Airtel connection so I swapped them. Not very happy at all. Can't browse at all while torrenting even after limiting maximum connections. Don't have any of these problems with the Beetel 220BX1 that came free with the connection. I just use the DG834G as a switch/WiFi AP.

The Beetel is only a modem, no WiFi. Are you happy with your current modem? If its stable enough for your purposes, then you can just get a wireless router with good range. Like the WRT54G series with dual antenna. Just connect your existing modem to the router in bridged mode.

I am happy with my dlink 502T modem. I just want Wifi capability

How is the Linksys WAG54G2's Wireless coverage. You said not more than 2 rooms with the netgear. Any idea?

Dunno, my friend had a small place, so couldn't check the range.

Since you are happy with your modem, try to get a WRT54G. These things have massive range and signal quality. Linksys WRT54G series - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Just connect it to your modem and you'll have WiFi capability.

WAG54G2 doesn't have an external antenna either, that might negatively affect the signal strength.

How about the WRT54GL instead of WRT54G?

Grab it now. Its the best version and very rare. Its designed for custom firmware like DD-WRT which adds a lot of features to the router.

Is it worth the try? Coz seems like it is very rarely available.

Might be an overkill for your needs. It is significantly costlier than the other WRT54Gxx models right now. You can find it on ebay.

The main selling point of the 'L' router is that it is was made for enthusiasts who like to mod their routers and install custom firmwares etc on it.

The WRT54G2 router has good reviews, and it does not have any signal issues compared to the older version with the external antennas. It also supports custom firmwares, so unless you really really want to to spend the extra 1k - 1.5k for the L version, you could safely stick with the basic router :)

I got the price for WRT54GL as Rs. 3375/-. G2 is cheaper than that?

Dude thats a steal for 3375!! Grab it now!!! Its normally like 5500 and above! If you install DD-WRT on it, you can increase the signal strength in the configuration too.

2700 on techshop.in with free shipping. About the same on ebay, might be cheaper with your dealer.

Techshop.in has the GL listed at 4k.. so the ~3.4k quoted to you seems far more attractive.

I think these guys are trying to get rid of old stock, as not many people specifically ask for the 'L' version. Even the regular WTR54G* whatever you get now costs more that that, and they are severely crippled compared to the WRT54GL.

^^^

The G2 is the current version of the WRT54G series. The older models with the external antennae have been phased out. I think the pricing of around ~2.7k for the G2 is a fair price, not a discounted rate for dumping old stock.

The question is does the OP really need to spend that additional money on buying a GL for a feature set he may not need. The G2 is quite a capable router, and has been reviewed on TE.

Can I get the link for it please? The review on TE I mean.

This thread has confused me to the brim. I am now even doubting whether to go in for a combo i.e., ADSL Modem + Router instead of the currently separate things for both :(

stick to ur older adsl modem and add to it access point which ever u wanna go with ... i wud go with GL with the price quote of wht ur getting is just tempting ... don think over and over ... loops ...
