i have tested both ati and nvidia ,found no difference in IQ while gaming , in windows ati IQ is little bit different ( yellowish ) and text appears little more sharper . though ati drivers are total crap , buggy in most of the games, i get weird glowing characters in prince of persia , crysis runs buggy in dx10 mode :| , nvidia is much better .

I have alternated between nVidia and ATi cards every time I upgraded (except for the last time when I upgraded from 1900XT to 4850CF) and personally I felt that ATi had the better overall IQ of the two even in cards of the same generation though from what I heard nVidia is catching up with to ATi with its latest series.
From G80 to G92/GT2xx, the image quality of NV cards actually went downhill as Shripad pointed out. I'd be hard pressed to tell the diff between a G80 and an ATi/AMD card. However comparing a G92/GT2xx to any ATi is a piece of cake.

Not sure about games, I've enjoyed them on nvidia cards too.
Movies on TN panels a different story I guess.
I have nvidia onboard and 4850 external that lets me switch between the two. While movies are watchable for everyone scattered around the room with the 4850, the same cant be said about the nvidia; with brightness set to max the movie is still too dark for someone sitting at a wide angle.
