Hi,

I am facing 2 problems with WinXP since the last couple of days.
1. Whenever I shut down WinXP the process "WMSIdle" stops responding. What is the purpose of this process and I dont find it running in Task Manager -> Processes as well . Is it some kind of a virus? I have AVG 8.0

2. Also after starting WinXP I dont get the Volume Icon in the systray although the checkbox for "Place Volume icon in Taskbar" in Control Panel is enabled.

Will greatly appreciate the help of all the XP gurus out there .:cool2:

Scan for registry errors with good tool like PC Tools Software Registry Mechanic.

Try other AV, Avast Home is free.

This tweak reduces the time XP waits before automatically closing any running programs when you give it the command to shutdown.

Go to Start then select Run

Type 'Regedit' and click ok

Find 'HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Control Panel\Desktop\'

Select 'WaitToKillAppTimeout'

Right click and select 'Modify'

Change the value to '1000'

Click 'OK'

Now select 'HungAppTimeout'

Right click and select 'Modify'

Change the value to '1000'

Click 'OK'

Now find 'HKEY_USERS\.DEFAULT\Control Panel\Desktop'

Select 'WaitToKillAppTimeout'

Right click and select 'Modify'

Change the value to '1000'

Click 'OK'

Now find 'HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\System\CurrentControlSet\Control\'

Select 'WaitToKillServiceTimeout'

Right click and select 'Modify'

Change the value to '1000'

Click 'OK'

WMSIdle is caused due to NMBgMonitor running in background.

NMBgMonitor is a non-essential Nero background process. It's not a malware. Remove this process entry from system start-up and your WMSIdle will be solved

Thx Shailesh . I have found that the problem was caused by enabling Nero Scout. The problem was gone as soon as I disabled it.

Anyone have a solution to this problem ? :S
I have CCleaner,Ashampoo WinOptimizer, AVG 8 and Registry Mechanic. The problem persists even after using these tools.

I dont have any themes installed , right now. By "processes" you mean the sndvol process in Task Manager, right?
