An insider tells me Win 7 prices in India are going to be cheaper than Vista. Might be only marginally cheaper, but atleast it isn't going to be more expensive.

yea they must reduce the price of software...I am expecting 3k or 3.5k for home edition ,,and 1k for starter edition

Vista starter edition sells for about ~1.7k, so I guess the Win 7 version would probably be about 1.5k.

I would pay 5k for the ultimate. Not a rupee more. Its not like it costs them to make another copy of the DVD. Considering the number of copies they can potentially sell in a country like India, i'm sure 5k can easily accommodate a reasonable profit.

vista starter costs 1.5 k

but there are so many limitations for a starter edition.

everyone needs ultimate edition ...

win 7 starter--1.5k

home edition-3k

professional -4k

ultimate -5k

I don't think they will ever learn. They force people to use pirated stuff. You know people actually buy antivirus now because it is affordable. And many more are buying the games they want to play. But the MS people may never learn.

in my opinion they can sell a OS for 1k or 2k.
220$ for ultimate edition
means 11k
Agreed. they need to consider the purchasing parity into consideration for sw pricing in India. (An avg engg in the US earns 4k-6k/month... in India it would be starting at ~20k INR)

I think GTA4 PC version was an excellent example of right pricing <thou it was a bad port:bleh:>. I don't know anyone personally who bought the pirated version. . A $1 to Rs10/- conv would probably make the same impact to our pockets as it does to the americans.

yea u can buy hardwares --> cpu ,gpu or a decent mobo for less than 10k
and u have to give 13k for an OS ...?

OS is available for free as Open source Linux or Pirated version. For hardware, they make investment for every piece they make. In software, they have to make one time investment. They are foolish enough to not understand how much more they can earn if they price it right/sensibly.

And I don't understand how you can compare hardware and software when they will earn more overall from software if they keep the prices suitable for the market. Its not the same thing for hardware. I have personally decided to buy Windows seven if it is lower than 4K for the Ultimate or atleast the Home edition.

And yes they do kind of force us. That's why they monopolise the market. To force us to buy their stuff even if it is insanely priced. We just find a way out of this trap.

You know there are several science softwares that every science student in research requires. And they start from 1.5 lakh onwards. Will you still be surprised if I tell you the student are "forced" to pirate them?

I am planning to get Win 7 through some friend of mine who is eligible for volume licensing. He will get 10 licenses for 17,000 (flat) and this will include MS Office too. If people are interested then I can try. Apart from me I will need 9 more buyers and then we can get Win 7 Prof. + MS Office 2007 standard for just Rs. 1,700/-. What do you say?

will you be giving the original dvd and box with bill?
imo your friend will get only 1 license with 10 serial numbers. there will be just one dvd. so what you are trying to do is sell serials illegaly.

From Microsoft:
Simply stated, volume licensing of software makes it easier and more affordable to run software on multiple computers within a single purchasing organization.
By acquiring software licenses through Microsoft Volume Licensing programs, you only pay for the software license. Boxed software, on the other hand, includes media (the CD-ROM or DVD), a user's guide and other packaging items.

No way this cant be true Win 7 for 1700.... Its a lie not even in volume licensing you can get vista with ms office in 1700/- ...!!NO WAY MAN!!...

I have asked my friend regarding all the above doubts. He says that we will be given soft copy of Win 7 at first (32 or 64 bit is still to be confirmed) - boxed DVD will be sent after few weeks. I expect to get 2 Keys with each key valid for 5 installations (making a total of 10 installations). You would be able to use a key for 120 days without it being counted. So if before 120 days you decide to reinstall the OS then you may do so without worrying about re-activation.

Regarding using it in a single organisation (or single "office") - I thought about it too but my friend told it will not matter as in an "organisation" the user can be spread across the whole country - and thus they too can access the OS package. Anyways I will definitely try to find out if there is any other legal complication before trying to go for the purchase. I shall confirm the price too.

Imagine the scenario if out of the ten buyers, the key no is misused or unintentionally leaked out by one! Wont the whole license be blacklisted?
