The drivers for the battery management might hav been improper or problematic in xp, for your make of battery..
While there might have been charge in the battery, the os would hav reported less or shut down because of it..

did you every try any other OS except xp?
The reason why XP now gives better battery is because you must hav installed the latest xp release, or atleast relatively newer release..

I don't think the WinXP installation is the suspect.. Coz the WinXP which i've installed in the laptop is the OEM version that i've got with the laptop!!! It was working fine for the initial years.. The version of windows xp & drivers installed was exactly the same before & after the Windows7 installation..

Also I've began noticing the drop in battery backup for last one & half year or so.. Again it was not a drastic change.. It gradually decresed to the '5min' level..

mayb some1 in ur house changed the battery as a gift to you. the timing was a coincidence.

Update:

It keeps gettin better..

I've turned on the laptop (on battery backup) on 7pm today evng, ran it idle till 10pm (total 3hours).. Have been using wifi heavily till 11pm until i saw a low battery warning & switched to mains..

Its overall 3hours of idle running & 1hour of heavy wifi usage (for browsing)..

I won't recommend that. If you tend to do some stuff that needs constant power and might get corrupted otherwise, then it's a hell of a problem! :) Also, even if the battery is there, it's by default disabled when the charging is full. So it's safe to use it even all day long.

Oh is that the case ?
Because my assumption was that the power goes from mains to battery and then to actually power the laptop, in the process the battery being continuously used. And hence i thought that this approach will save my battery. But if what you say is correct then i see no problem with using the laptop on AC Power with battery attached to the laptop.

Yup I am pretty sure :) I also used the think the way you are. Then I searched for it and corrected myself. Also to confirm this, you can just right click on your Battery icon -> Battery Meter. Your battery bar will be shown there and when the charging is full and the lappy is on AC, the battery status will be shown as idle. :)

Only benefit on removing your battery would be, the reduction in weight which would be good if using lappy on your laps :)

I have heard that Windows 7 has much better battery power management than previous versions of Windows. Really looking forward to the lunch in Oct. 22.

But is it safe to detach the battery from the laptop and use it only on AC Power. electricty fluctuation might have a roll to play in it..

If you are continuously using your laptop for several hours and that too at a single stationary position i suggest detach the battery from the laptop and use it only on AC Power.

Problems with this approach

1. You may have to shutdown / hibernate your laptop if you intend to take the lappy somewhere
2. If electricity plays spoilsport then your lappy will shut off immediately.

I use this approach if there is an overnight download scheduled.
