Hey guys,

I wanna wifi network my house (lol, say my bakhera, i hate wires sticking out of my laptop just to access internet)

Say I get a BB connection from Airtel (DSL modem.) What do i need to access Internet via Wifi?

I guess a Wifi router? Or a access point. I really havent done any research in this area, but am gonna do now, but put up this thread so that some ppl may offer the goods they carry.

Regards,

Karan

You'd need a router. I've got a Linksys WRT54G. Pretty decent unit. Good features and nice coverage. Set me back 3.5k last October. Should be less than that now.

Either that or the Netgear WGR614 v6, which I have (and so does Chaos)... they're the same but the Linksys will have a higher price coming from Cisco. The Netgear is available for 2.5k or less in Bangalore but if you can get it in Bombay for a lower price, good enough. I'm going to buy one this week for a friend so in a day I can give you a more accurate price.

Hey..by hte way..Kumar...what is theat sebsite about...is it about HACKING>>>

I can help anyone set up a wireless router in 5 minutes ;) It doesn't take time at all once you've hooked up all components... agreed, it could take a while if you haven't done it before.

That my friend, it the real question, jiska answer abhi tak mujhe pata nehin.... Ok let me search a bit about both the models.... and thx for the link kumar :P

Frankly, I haven't seen much of a difference between different entry-level router makes....

Over the last two years, I have set up a Linksys, Netgear and Belkin router (all entry-level meant for home usage) and couldn't find a way to distinguish performance differences between any of the above makes...

I'd say instead of wasting time reading up router reviews, just get any one (D-Link/Negear/Linksys/Belkin 802.11b/g) that you get a decent price.... :P

**Caution Note** A friend of mine picked up an el-cheapo SMC router for 1.4K which unfortunately keeps dropping the wireless network randomly at its own whim....so perhpas it may make sense to stick to known brands

How much for a dlink router ??

When I picked up my NetGear WGR614 router a couple of months back, the D-link was for around ~ 2.8k IIRC. If i'm not mistaken, it was a DI-524.

I wouldn't recommend D-Link... we experienced signal issues with one of our D-links at the office.

@deejay - ive heard the dlink aint that great. netgear rio told me is good. otherwise u can get linksys also. its for around 2600-2700rs

I am using a D-Link DL624+...... it is decent enough. DOesnt drop connections or anything.

But while using the Wi-Fi, it hangs after a few days. So, in that case, I have to switch off the router manually and then switch it on again after 20-30 secs.

That isnt really a problem as 95% of the time, I am at home to reset the router if it hangs....

But it is still a minor issue you should know abt.

I suggest you go for a Linksys/Netgear router.

This May sound funny, but more often than not, it is a heat related issue....

The Linksys wrt54g also suffers from the same problem....

SO does Belkin....

Try moving the router to a more well ventilated area, and turn it upside down so that the vents are exposed to the airflow in the room....

Given the Chennai heat, this problem became a lot more recurrent for me, especially after the mercry shot up post-April....so I moved the router to my bedroom so that the AC keeps it cool....The problem has since disappeared
