Graphic Cards X1800XT Temperature Issue

well fail to see the accusing thing here, relax...

where as the brand thing is concerned, this x1800xt has the default dual slot hsf as all the other brands of card have, and we are not discussing component quality ehre but cooling performance which should be same with all brands runing this same dual slot cooler...

just for the seck of it, run the game forget about temps.

With air condition in the room my card easily touch 80 playing oblivion. Little less in CSS.

Let the artifact scanner of ati tool run for 30 minutes and see what happens. If card is overheating and causes artifacts i have observed it freezes after 5-10 seconds before causing damage to the card.

If its not artifacting you really dont have much to worry about. this is how hot these cards run.

Whats the temp of other components, and whats ambiant temp ( from probe on mobo )

funky..it went 76-95 in less than 15 min with stress test ..it was still rising...I would prob grit my teeth n let this stay at 95 even but how can we let this approach 100 when we know its not staying constant

wat say RAVE...mod baba has it now..save me little brother...Il throw u a nice party

There you go getting aggrieved , hyper and angry for no reason. its the reason i prefer to refrain from answering / replying to any queries nowadays except perhaps for a few members whom i can interact with seriously and sincerely...

if i had this problem the first day i buy a card i will remove the heatsink , clean the whole card with IPA then perhaps give it a hot water shower, dry it completely, then apply a fresh coat of a good quality , thicher thermal compound (Not AS5), re apply the heatsink with a precise and sequential tightening of the screws (very important), see to it that the h/s base is perfectly attached to the gpu core (using a torch to see if there are any "gaps" between the h/s and core) ....doing it all over again if it is not to my satisfaction. then retest the card.
if the high temps persist first i would put an extra fan at a strategic position on or near the card. second i would remove / move all the pci cards near it for better air flow (V.V. imp)...
if this does not work then i would go in for a much better after market gpu cooler ....and curse myself for not listening to other expirienced members and not buying "sapphire" brand.;) :ohyeah: ....j/k

see what i was going to post tomorrow i have posted it in a nutshell today itself.::D
thats because i did not want to disturb rave during his exams ....they are more important than the high temps of the card atleast till tomorrow

u forgot all this while the fan was at default speed which i think is not more than 30%, all u need to do if the temp stays same is configure the ati tool like i showed u today saving different temperature profiles ;)

as i said dont jump on to any conclusions rite now, relax and have a coke, and let me study my physics paper :P

Seems like a typical case o HSF not making proper contact with the card... Also if the card isnt artifacting then its not bad... So chillax... Now do whatever Funky and Dj have suggested... rave will help you with that... Also running the card like this for 15-20 minutes wont hurt... Also did you try the finger test... it could be that temperature sensor on the card is reporting wrong temps alltogather...

@Rave Padh le... fail ho jayega :@... Good luck :)

WEll I would imagine Graphic cards are supposed to run stable at default fan speeds...

@deejay

I cant do all that, so I hv given this to someone who can.

You are still missing the point...I said I got the card from an experienced member of TE who told me he has used this card...You understand me SIR. So I have listened to exp members...and taken their opinions...

Rave,
brother first get off the net till ur exams are over, atleast till tomorrow.....
second: why do you think component quality is not important ?? dont you think out of tolerence / derating of the components (especially resistors on the power feedback circuits) will result in a higher vcore voltage(s) or vdimm
voltages ....leading to a very high temps even at default speeds ??(i am not implying this is the case here but the possibilities exists and cannot be ruled out unless measured and ruled out as an issue). similarly there are many other components which can screw up the voltages ....and the possibilities also exist that the temp of the card is not as high as shown since the sensor circuits could be defective due to faulty components ....

neverthless Try reseating the h/s properly first ....

the ATI fan does not run at its full capable speed. As soon as temp reaches 100C i wont be surprised that fan suddenly kicks in at full speed.

The fan speed is increased as per temperature.

You really need to go about this scientifically and not become restless now.

When rave's exam is over try different things, try artifact tester and rthdribl.

Run games. Specially run a complete run of 3dmark06. If your card is gona crash/artifact due to overheating it will do so in 3dmark06 game test 2 or last game test. Thats like ultimate thing you can throw at your card. :)

Just relax, its not something unheard of when it comes to x1k series.

ok now some tutorials on AS5 applying needed... funky help

Ok now what about the thermal pads on the memory??

edit 1400 posts w00t!!!

89 fan goes humm
90 hummmmmm
91 hummmmmmmm
92 hummmmmmmmmm
93 hummmmmmmmmmmmm
95 hummmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmm
96 hummmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmm

Anyways thanks funky we will try what u say...

Have to say as the fan speed started increasing with temperature...the speed with which the temp rose slowed..we almost thought it was going to be stable at 94 coz it stayed put for abt 3 min..then it went to 94 after 4 min and then 95 after few more min...but still crossed over to 96 when the temp indicator started leaning towards red

What made you think it would not ?? i mean with the rise in detected temp increase both the fan speed will increase and the rate of temp rise will slow down.

I am still saying do not run ur card at this high temps ..even for testing ....if the temps reach 85C and rising immediately shut down the m/c and take effective steps to cure the high temp issues.unless ofcourse you dont care and are banking upon getting it RMA'ed ...which is a costly and time cosuming affair since it has no local warranty.

The limit for modern GPUs is arnd 125C, thats when Nvidia drivers begin downclocking to drop temperature, given the high temps on the X1K series I think that limit would probably be the same or a bit higher for those as well.
With fan set to normal, my 1800XT maxes out at 91c upon few hours of load. But I also have a cramped matx case.

Well nice to see someone in the 90s...Iam crossing 95 with case open n it doesnt take more than 15 min to cross 95...my cabby is jamaica and I have 3 fans + TTBT for the opty....the worst part is temp still rising..it sure looks set to touch 100 the way it was rising....tommo we will find out

Tommo is the big day

Hey Vij,

Relax man, first of all calm down. The cards is not artifacting i understand,so you do not need to worry.

I went through the entire thread and all i cna say is this is a case of improper contact.I would remove the heatsink, clean the card with Ethyl Alcohol and then reapply AS5 and slap on the heatsink.

Also i think when the stuff arrived at Rave's place ,he assembled everything, tested it.He didnt experience any problems. So i think the problem wasnt there from the beginning....

What happened suddenly then ???

Hey Funky i think a tutorial to card cleaning and reapplying thermal paste is needed.

Let me know if you doing it or else i will post...

OT:
now iam very worried because my Sapphire X1800XT 512MB is coming this month.

Any chances of this problem in it too?

someone answer me please.

iam not trying to hijack this thread.

I havent done anything wrong...I have just bought this card.......I took it from RAVE and sat with the guy who assembled and checked the same day n find this....you ask me what hapnd!!!......I havent even seen any evidence of this staying stable to tell u....just words...

Pl dont mind.... but Iam scared as hell...my dad wud burn me alive for not heeding to his advice...

Read any X1800/1900 review on the net, load temps of 90-95c are the norm not the exception dude.U however need to take caution as u won't get a warranty for the card here.
