Sources at equipment makers were cited by a Chinese-language Commercial Times report as saying that the Xbox 360 will be equipped with a 65nm-made Xenos graphics processing unit (GPU) in the fall and that corresponding foundry partner Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Company (TSMC) will see benefits.

The paper cited the sources as saying that an engineering version of the 65nm-made Xenos has been sent out and production will start in May. TSMC projected sales contribution from 65nm would amount to 5% during mid-2007.

On a separate note, TSMC announced the introduction of 65nm-made embedded DRAM in March. Embedded DRAM is one of the two dies that comprise the Xenos. In the 90nm version of the Xenos, embedded DRAM is manufactured by NEC.

Lol if M$ keeps upgrading the 360 like this, itll make people seriously regret buying it a few months early. :P

yeah but MS relize that they are facing the heat from PS3 hardware which is quite better than their own hardware, cos they had a released Xbox360 more than a year ago from the launch of PS3

yup that's true but early XBOX 360 owners r bound to get cheated...

and to add insult to injury Miscrosoft is not fixing existing bugs in XBOX 360 like the Ring of Death and Disc scratching...

I second that monty....They shud have atleast fixed the ring of death in Elite bt they havent....lots of reports floating on Web....chk my earlier post for it....

Sony is doin the same with PS3 & PSP....lol but they are seriously improving the experience of their consoles & handhelds....wth the firmware upgrades Hardware issues cant be turned off.....

You guys do realise that this is just fab change.

That does not make new xbox any powerful. It will still run at same CPU and GPU clock frequencies.

Sure it will run little cooler and will cost less to manufacturer. But his happens in every console's life cycle. Happened with PS2 and xbox as well.

The company need to shift to different fab to continue making better profits.

The new xbox will be able to do exact same things as the old one. It wont be faster or anything.

You guys are nuts if you think this will in any way effect current X360 owners. There is no way any dev would manufacture games optimized for the 65nm GPU thereby leaving out the already 10+million X360 owners in the dust. The devs would be the losers.

At best, this is a move to reduce power consumption and subsequently heating problems. i.e, this might be one of the many steps towards making the X360 more durable.

But please, continue fooling yourselves that this a result of MS being intimidated by a console that hasn't yet shown even the slightest advantage over the x360.

LOL this is just a cost cutting move... 65nm means cheaper, cooler running chips which would probably be more reliable... there's no feature change here :P.

Think you got it wrong Nish ... there is no way they can optimize games for 65nm even if they wanted too :P ... coz it's still the same thing ... the only thing they could do is clock it higher as it runs cooler though I dont think tht'll happen either :)

there is no thinking needed there.
It will never happen with consoles.
The advantage and one of the difference when it comes to pc and console is that throughout the life of the console there is no change in console parameters. Sure small features are added like HDMI and HD DVD etc. But the core parameters will remain same.
This ensures that every single person will get exact same gameplay experience. Billions are invested by game developers to take advantage of these fixed parameters of the console.

You're right! I was thinking overclocking too but now realize it wouldn't apply well to a console.

LOL any chance of installing custom heatsinks or atleast some 1000mm Exhaust Fans in the backside of the XBOX360 :P

There is an old saying when you are in manufacturing business... The profit will go higher only and only if you can reduce your cost of production... M$ is doing just that and nothing else and so will Sony in coming days.

These kind of fab changes are always expected infact taken into consideration as soon as you think of manufacturing a product. And this only proves one thing that 360 is here to stay.

And i am sure that M$ will deal with ROD problem with this release as they have ample time to work on the project now as there are no deadlines for this one :)

It is always advisable to go in for a newer version... Also it will be in full production in may... So i am guessing it will be out on streets by july... If you wanna wait till that time then go ahead... Or if you are planning to buy a unmodded version then there is no problem as if it dies it will mostly be replaced by the newer version ;)
