Has anybody tried out this update??

One of my friend's want me to get this update done on his banned console.. Iam a bit afraid of bricking it if anything goes wrong.. Any suggestions of how to do the update safely??

Well i think you should be good to go, don't download the 7mb update, go for the full 81mb update pack which is available in bitgamer, i am leaving a readme of that update:-
The new features are:

- New features for avatars.

- New option that enables support for external hard drives, pen drives and other storage devices with USB connection to save complete games (only installed from the dvd, not to be confused and mistakenly think that it can load isos), demos , saves, profiles, dlc (only downloaded directly from xbl, so do not get your hopes up that may install dlc downloaded from other sites, unless the data come in the dvd to install), etc ...

- The maximum size will be detected by the 16Gb device (regardless if the device has a much larger size also became apparent only 16Gb) per port (only the 2 front), a total of 32 GB would be available.

- Restores the option to save games on the hard disk that was lost because of the ban earlier (this can now be reinstalled games on the hard drive in consoles banned, do not fix corrupt profiles, this should be done by other media)

i did update my xbox 360 and now i can even use my WD external HDD to install games

What's the capacity of that WD external HDD?? Can you use the full space available in that??

Yeah.. I know that 16GB is the limit.. Since he told a portable HDD, just got curious..
That can only be accomplished with a JTAG hack, else forget about using the full USB HDD space, unless of course if the drive is a 20GB HDD. :P

First download this file.

Unzip the contents to a pen drive (the folder $SystemUpdate should be in the root directory of the pen drive).

Switch off the console, insert the pen drive onto one of the front usb ports.

Switch on the console & update would automatically start.

^^tried that many times but its simply doesnot start the update....got an old console <2007...update not starting at all...tried burning to root folder of cd as well...but its not starting as well...

yes...I had vdos n pics earlier on tht ...which was detected byy xbox...then i delted it n copied update to base folder....

But it dont work...even cds are not working...it detects them as mixed mode cd...but when i turn off n on ...nothng happens...

ya it limits usage to 16GB

but i have an arcade and any storage to install games is a blessing for me

Make sure the folder's name is $SystemUpdate. If you have download the zip file given in the above link, then you need to remove the '9199' part.

Not an issue.. The folder name in the root of that zip file is "$SystemUpdate" itself..

It should work fine with the old dashboard also.. Have tried it once & was working without a hitch.. May be there is some setting to enable updating??
