Graphic Cards XFX 8600 GT heat up!

Forerunner
Hi guys,

My 8600 gt is around 2-3 years old now (bought last year from ebay)...

Initially I never monitored its temps...but recently when I started having a look on them.....I found this:

Idle: 74 C
Load(playing Prince of Persia-2008): 107 C

So, I searched in this forum and found out about 8600gt heating problems.

Then, I tried fanspeed=100% from rivatuner but still almost the same temps.

Then finally it removed the hsf, cleaned it, applied CM thermal grease(leftover from CM Hyper TX3) on the core....

Now the temps are Idle: 68C and Load: 94C

I will be getting an extra 120mm case fan which will be inline of the card and maybe cool it down some more....

What I want to know is should the thermal grease be applied on the wall-like border of the core....?

What i mean is:

If yes, then I will have to buy a new thermal grease.....:)

Thanks in advance!!!

1. Check the Fan on your HSF, it might have worn out , so must be spinning really slow making a lot of noise.

2. Check the airflow in your cabinet a front intake and a rear exhaust fan is enough to keep your GFX's temps ~ 55C idle(max.).

3. Post a pic of your HSF here, XFX gave 2 type of HSF models

a)

b)

If it's the first one, remove the metal plate and keep it removed.

If it's the second one, there might be a problem with the fan(most probably) or airflow.

In both cases remove the HSF, clean the HSF and reapply TIM.

Local ceramic white-TIM should do the job for such a small GFX Card.

4. Reattach the HSF and tighten the screws appropriately w/o over-tightening.

Now run the config with side panel open, ideally temps should be around 48C-55C(idle), if temps still dont fall, there's a serious fault with your GFX card. Send it for RMA though I seriously doubt it may still be under warranty.

Cheers.

I have the first one but with a different type of fan:

I have already done this:
In both cases remove the HSF, clean the HSF and reapply TIM.

4. Reattach the HSF and tighten the screws appropriately w/o over-tightening.

Today I will be buying a 120mm case fan for intake(currently no intake fan in my cabby)....

My 8600GT idles @ 50C and under load does not go beyond 71C. Now compare this to your result. There's something wrong with your GFX card , check the capacitors and Voltage regulating ICs. Remove the brand plate"XFX 8600GT" from the HSF ,and check if the fan is rotating properly?

@ challapradyumna your 8400GS is also overheating.

Idle temps > 65C will cause your GFX Card to fail sooner or later.

no i have placed my cabinet fan on top off the TV tuner card, the GPU fan had stopped working & was causing heating issue while playing games

Mine giving 55-60 idle and at gaming mostly 65-75 but when i run NFS-The Run/ Battlefield 3 (Frostbite 2 Engine) it can't RUN (Crashed due to overtempt about 90-100)..:ashamed:

This is funny...fixed the 120mm fan(intake) to the front....no change in temps.... :S

Fixed one more 80mm fan to the side panel inline with the card....outward blowing...no change....

[attachment=10537:17475.attach]

Changed to inward blowing(intake)...still no change....:@

Should I reapply thermal paste and try....or any other suggestions guys?

I have used thermal paste leftover from CM Hyper TX3......

Make 120 mm Fan an Exhaust. It should be near the gfx card on the side panel.
This should help. worked for me, when I had 8600GT.

BTw what are the fan speeds at 50% and at 100%

Removed the hsf and saw that previously I had applied excess thermal paste and some of it had spread out.....

Also, it was not dried up either...I think this was the problem....

Now I have used less paste and kept for drying....will install it after sometime.....

There is no spce for a 120mm fan ner the side/rear panels....... only front panel can be used....

This is my current cabinet layout(with one grill above the CPU and one above the 8600GT on the side panel):

Ok...installed the card again...and temps are 65C idle and 100C on load....lower than before....

I waited for about an hour to let the paste dry before using the card....is it ok?

Also I have increased fan speed to 100%(in both "System Tweaks" and "Low-level System Tweaks") in RivaTuner but it goes down to 30% suddenly/randomly after sometime....:

Here is the new graph:

Temp looks OK now.100c is a normal temperature for 8 series cards.

a side panel fan would decrease the temperature.(5-6 c)

IMHO do not spend too much money.Use this card for now and buy a new one later .

Idle and Load temperatures are way beyond normal. If this goes for some time, your card will die for sure. Anyway, no point in buying a new heatsink for 8600Gt..

Try this method :
1) Get Arctic Tx4 compound / Antec Formula 6 Compound from your Friend / store.
2) Apply a think layer on Heatsink with a plastic spreader
3) Remove the 8600Gt fan
4) Buy a new 80mm fan and tie it over your card with the help of plastic thread or anything so that it doesn't vibrate.
4) Attach the fan molex pins with PSU.
5) monitor the temp.. I'm sure you'll get better temperature than present.. If possible 50C Idle - 75-80C Load. this is acceptable than your present temp.
