XPS M1330 with 8400M GS hands down.... stop spreading FUD people :) Dell and nVidia are working together to fix the failing graphics card issue.... its fully covered under warranty... and if you have 3 year complete cover like me, its perfectly fine :)

as long as ur machine's under warranty, u dont have to worry about anything.

I hate to open up the same can of worms here, but I believe warranties exist *in case* something goes wrong... if a product has a high failure rate and the company hasn't confirmed it is an issue they're working on, I would consider myself pretty stupid to still buy it after being fully aware of the issues.

Are you guys absolutely fine *knowing* something could go wrong (more than once perhaps)? Maybe your time is worth nothing so downtime doesn't matter, but would you have still bought your notebooks had you known about this widespread issue beforehand?

And I don't remember Dell making any announcement about overheating, have they? If you're referring to that nVIDIA news article, how do you know it is the 8400M chips with a problem? They simply said mobile chips so it could be any. Personally, I don't think it's an nVIDIA issue, I'm pretty sure Dell is responsible for their notebook design and cooling.

EDIT: Btw, the only potential fix for the M1330 issue voids warranty... exciting!

actually dell IS aware of the issue as per my fends in Dell, even though they might not make a full fledged announcement, yet. Everyone knows of it.

If you call them up n tell them theres an issue with one o their premium models, i m pretty sure ur assured of a fix, as simple as that :) n hopefully they ll have a fix out or everyone soon enough ;)

i wud have still gone for the same macine if i had known that dell wasnt being difficult while replacing mobos.. for some1 who doesnt want to take any chances, x3100 does give any probs if ur willing to compromise on the graphics. for me, i personally chose this model because i only wanted an led backlit 13 inch notebook. the other option was the vaio sz which wasnt customizable and way more expensive.. the only upside was the carbon fibre body.

as far as the latitude goes, its gnna b replaced with the e series very soon. i wudnt buy the latitude knowing tht its gonna b obsolete very soon.

if its jst between the 2 xps' , like i sed, size is a personal choice.

You mean Dell tech support is aware of the issue due to the number of complaints, so they know the next step is a board+gpu replacement... that's a service we're paying for, you make it sound like Dell is doing us a favor.

Dell hasn't made an announcement because they don't have a solution yet so even a recall is pointless. I've heard of a few replacement boards also failing, my bro's did today. Any comments?

So you would not buy a notebook that is being phased out (even though it's under warranty), but you'd buy a notebook that has known overheating issues with no permanent solution in sight? ;)

For the record, again, the M1330 is a brilliant notebook but it has overheating issues related to it's cooling design. I've had many notebooks, mostly Dell, and I've never had to call tech support. I don't compromise on cost so I don't expect product companies to compromise on quality.

Is the "3 Year Limited Warranty and 3 Year Mail-in Service" for the Latitude D630 different from the "3Yr In-Home Service,4 Parts + Labor,5 24x7 Phone Support" for the XPS M1530?

the 1330 has a warranty too yknow. and yes, im aware of the fact that the problem is a cooling design flaw. but then again, when you know what the new model looks like and that its gonna be out a few weeks after you buy ur notebook, dont you feel that you shud rather wait or buy something different?

Then again, if the cooling flaw IS an issue for you, then id still say, go for the 1530 or wait for the e series. OR, go for the 1330 with the X3100 which will make ur gaming options more limited.

I also feel that since its for college, go for something trendier. I personally find the latitude more suited for working people. Then again, its a personal choice. Not that i have anything against the latitude, its definately a brilliant machine, but an xps would be sleeker, lighter and has a fresher feel to it which the old dells dont.

u taking it the wrong way man :P

i aint saying theres any favors involved here. My only point is that they know theres an issue, so they will of course have to fix it if anything happens :)

Once the 3 yr warranties get over tho, its anyones guess wats gonna happen :P, existing owners will have to hope there s a fix avl befire that happens ;)

Nope, I didn't. I'm just tired of a few people making it sound like it's *alright* that a 70k+ notebook has a major design flaw because Dell is ready to replace the board+gpu any number of times during the warranty period. Wake up!!

Truth be told, it's been a little over 6 months and there's no *real* fix yet, and if you were in my shoes you'd understand the frustration. I currently don't have space for a desktop and was counting on the M1330, instead I'm counting on an Inspiron that costs 50% less and it's doing a swell job.

Agree with the last part, and its totally true. You'd expect this kind of quality f***ups with much smaller brands, and certainly not in a premium positioned class product like the "XPS" series.

I guess the OP is in love with the XPS M1330. Dude then just buy it and be ready for anything that happens afterwards since you are in love with the machine hehe...

Alright. The D630 is out of the equation if the Latitude warranty isn't as good as the XPS one.

Is the M1530 going to be too heavy to carry around in a backpack?

Is it as heavy as the last gen 15.4" notebooks?

(E1505 etc)

Actually, what's more important is, does is feel as heavy as other 15.4" notebooks? Weight distribution et all.

Tricky question, difficult to answer man. I've found all my 15.4" notebooks heavy while traveling... the rest of the time I was driving so it didn't matter.
