Your dream of being invisible is just months away!

Your dream of possessing a Harry Potter invisibility cloak could be just months away, at least that's what a British scientist claims.

Sir John Pendry, who pioneered the concept, believes that the cloak that can make an object disappear could be unveiled within next six months.

"The first man-made cloak will be more like an invisibility "carpet", the Sydney Morning Herald quoted Pendry as saying.

As a tiny object is placed underneath it, it will seemingly disappear because the bump the object makes will be hidden from view with an artificial mirage.

Pendry said that the new development would also prove the potential of metamaterials that have an unusual property to interact with light and electronic waves.

These materials could be, in future, used for developing barriers to prevent waves damaging the shore, acoustic cloaks to reduce noise, stealth systems for the military, and faster telecommunications.

They can be designed to hide things by bending radiation around an object as if it were not there, "like water flowing around a stone", said Professor Pendry.

Pendry had discussed about the new materials in a lecture in the US, backing it with the example of Harry Potter.

"I said one of the interesting things they could do is hide things," said Pendry.

The example prompted David Smith of Duke University to build an invisibility cloak.

"They went back and built the darn thing," Pendry added.

In 2006, he unveiled the first cloak, which steered radiation around a copper cylinder, making it invisible to microwave detection.

"I am optimistic work in progress will produce an optical cloak in the next six months," said Pendry.

I just can't imagine the things i'd do when i'd be invisible :ohyeah: :ohyeah:

Ofcourse doing those kind of things will probably require you to take off the cloak thus defeating the purpose.

Umm you can still do without removing the cloak completely :bleh:

Ummm... how about doing those kind of things... UNDER the cloak !! :bleh:

And make a cheap horror movie with the various disembodied "parts" of the human anatomy?

You can achieve the same effect in a room with lights switched off. You won't see anything in both cases.:hap2:

I was thinking more in terms of a Crysis like nanosuit!

I had been thinking for a while now, trying to figure out the cloak, and how it can be used/was shown in Crysis

I came to a conclusion that the "nanosuit" they made(in crysis) is perfectly practical (at least in terms of Cloak and Armor )

If u have seen the suit closely, u might have noticed that the suit exterior is made of multiple small hexagonal armor plates!

I imagined that we could put a layer of similar hexagonal multiple led screens under the main armor plating along with a high resolution miniature camera for certain no. of armor plates.

Therefore, when the suit changes to cloak mode, the armor plates will simply move under the screen plating.

(it would look like millions of small LED screens interspersed with multiple high res cameras(CCD censors) in between.)

When the cloak will be enabled, each CCD sensor will take a direct feed to the onboard computer which will analyze the realtime footage and then process it to cancel out the useless data, such as footage other than whats directly ahead or behind or anywhere of the suit. (so that only the image of a straight line of sight of camera can be shown(and not the whole FOV of the sensor)

This will be synchronized with all the other ccd sensors facing that side, so that the projected image contains only the portion normally the suit would have hidden(when visible)

Then it will project the image onto the millions of hexagonal led screens according to the orientation of the cameras in realtime. Rendering the suit itself invisible!

Though this wont be true invisibility! as the miniature ccd sensors might show, but most of the exposed parts would get hidden!
Once u r over with the cloak, the normal armor plating will just slide from under the screens to cover them!!

Whoa! we can make a nanosuit!!:D
Will the US military fund me!? :P

^ They are already working on it. They wouldn't pay you, they'd pay Crytek! The core design of the nanosuit in Crysis is based on this: Powered exoskeleton

And instead of using the LED and CCDs, some guy has used fiber-optic cables to weave an invisibility jacket.

he unveiled the first cloak, which steered radiation around a copper cylinder, making it invisible to microwave detection.

means explosives too can be bypassed by metal detectors

I dont think fibre optics will be effective!

i have a bundle of fibre optic(salvaged from somewhere) i tried a lot to look through it but it just appears opaque

I had shown a LASER light at it and it passed to the other side without probs but i just wasnt able to look at the other side through it :( !!

so kinda scratched the project then!:P

Very true !!! :ohyeah:
But then just the sights will be enough for some :hap5:

3 Cheers for the Invisibility cloak !!! :hap2:

They may very well come up with a dotted extra smooth cloak for that purpose. Never underestimate those perverted lonely scientists.

Now that would be something altogether ! :ohyeah:

oh, so you are the types, who is happy with the sight and then do your own lonely thing, and then move on to other pastures,
