Today at CES, ZTE has shown of their 5" Full HD packing Grand S smartphone. Not only that, it claims to be the slimmest 5" display carrying smartphone. In addition, Lenovo shows off it's 5.5" IdeaPhone K900 which packs an all new Dual Core Atom chipset by Intel. To find out more, read on!
ZTE Grand S

The ZTE Grand S is ZTE's finest 5" Full HD smartphone. It has a slim(mest) waist of just 6.9 mm. For such a huge display phone and with presumably a large battery, this is a big accomplishment. The Grand S is another entry into the Quad Core field, packing once again the Qualcomm Snapdragon S4 Pro chipset. However, this one seems to be clocked a little bit higher.
ZTE Grand S Specifications

  • Qualcomm Snapdragon S4 Pro
  • 1.7 GHz quad core Krait CPU
  • Adreno 320 GPU
  • 2 GB of RAM
  • 5" 1080p (1920*1080 pixels) display
  • 13 MP camera, auto focus and LED flash
  • 1080p video recording @ 30 fps
  • 2 MP front camera, 1080p @ 30 fps
  • 16 GB of internal storage
  • expandable storage up to 32 GB via micro SD
  • 6.9 mm thickness
  • Android 4.1 Jelly Bean

The ZTE Grand S is undoubtedly a premium handset. What is still in the dark is the smartphone's price and battery capacity. We are still not certain just how much battery was given up for achieving that slim profile. Let's hope it doesn't break the device and have it end up with say 6 hours of paltry battery life. Otherwise, design and all including the slightly faster 1.7 GHz (v/s 1.5 GHz) clocked quad core Krait is welcome. The 13 MP camera module is also a welcome featre.

The device has 16 GB of internal storage, and thankfully is expandable by up to 32 GB via micro SD card slot. Android 4.1 Jelly Bean powers this smartphone. We hope for a quick update to Android 4.2 Jelly Bean.
Lenovo IdeaPhone K900

The Lenovo IdeaPhone K900 is the successor to the K800 smartphone. Here at CES, Lenovo unveils a new smartphone running on Intel's Atom platform. In addition, the smartphone adds a new twist with it's screen size being larger than 5", at 5.5" while packing that amazing Full HD (1920 x 1080 pixels) display resolution. That grants the display a still amazing 400 ppi pixels density.
Lenovo IdeaPhone K900 Specifications

  • Intel Atom Z2580
  • 1.8 GHz dual core Atom CPU
  • PowerVR SGX544 GPU
  • 2 GB of RAM
  • 5.5" 1080p (1920*1080 pixels) display
  • 13 MP Sony Exmor camera sensor
  • BSI module, auto focus and LED flash
  • 1080p video recording @ 30 fps
  • 2 MP front camera
  • expandable storage up to 32 GB via micro SD
  • 6.9 mm thickness, 162 grams weight
  • Android 4.2 Jelly Bean

The Lenovo K900 has a lot going for it. First up is the larger 5.5" Full HD display, confusing those between the world of a phablet and tablet even further (but also being an excellent alternative to Samsung's Galaxy Note II). The camera module has brought in some Sony horse power with it's 13 MP Sony Exmor BSI camera sensor with an impressively bright F/1.8 lens.

The phone does add extra spice by packing Intel's new (and faster) dual core Atom chipset. The 1.8 GHz Atom dual core won't be much slower (if at all any slower) than the fastest quad core ARM chipsets currently in the market. In addition, the phone maintains a 6.9 mm slim profile despite the huge dimensions. The weight is under check at 162 grams for this slim and trim phablet.

The best goody with this phone is that it will come with Android 4.2 Jelly Bean OS. The worst news is probably that Lenovo is aiming to launch only in China at first. C'mon Lenovo, show us some love too!
LG Optimus VU II

LG Optimus VU wasn't a successful product. And perhaps there is a reason behind that. And perhaps for that very same reason, LG should simply drop it and move on to some other smartphone, like putting in more resources for their next LG Optimus G2 smartphone.

The Optimus VU has a problem. It's the aspect ratio. Packing a 1024*768 resolution display, the phone is more squarish than a phone should be, or an intended phablet as well. While a square phone would be nice to play multi player Tic-Tac-Toe, we find it hard pressed to support LG's design beyond that point. The Optimus VU has some nice specifications with some hiccups (not that it will help the phone's cause).

LG Optimus VU II Specifications

  • Qualcomm Snapdragon S4 MSM8960 chipset
  • 1.5 GHz dual core Krait CPU
  • Adreno 225 GPU
  • 2 GB of RAM
  • 5" XGA (1024 x 768 pixels) HD-IPS LCD display
  • 8 MP camera, auto focus and LED flash
  • 1080p video recording @ 30 fps
  • 1.3 MP front camera
  • expandable storage up to 32 GB via micro SD
  • 9.4 mm thick, 159 grams weight
  • 2,150 mAh Li-Ion battery
  • Android 4.0 ICS

The smartphone is a dual core in a quad core flagship filled world. In addition, the odd 5" XGA resolution doesn't help. Add to that the phone's thickness, weight and the ridiculous Android 4.0 ICS OS on-board (really LG? That's what you're doing?) really makes us feel that LG isn't even trying anymore with their smartphones.

Let's hope LG's next phone doesn't release with Android 4.0 ICS as well. Good luck to the Optimus G2.
