guys why do you consume protein powder ? a friend of mine saying it's a marketing gimmick, how true is that ?

i wont say its a marketing gimmick but its not absolutely necessary either ... it just supplements your "diet" therefore you ought to have a diet first ... if you can complete your protein requirement by whole foods .. you really need not to worry about whey !!! but people who are competing or looking for body fat less than 10% are left with very less protein sources which have zero carbs or fats ! for them it may be must :) just like someone who doesnt care about the overclocks etc as long as games are running glitch free ... but then their are people who want juice out every single thing from their PC who get those priceless frames :p

Not really a gimmick but definitely extremely overhyped. Consuming whey protein shake post workout is a good way to easily have good proteins after workout (when body needs maximum stuff to grow) Whey shakes is so overhyped that even in this thread people ask more questions about "which powder to buy" instead of "how to get stronger/increase number of reps on pull-ups" etc :)

To start working out again after almost an year, now a world class bench, floor mat, powerlifting shoes in wishlist ... :yahoo:

and what happens, if you just eat powder & don't work out ?

It's just a supplement. If you eat the powder and not work out, it would be same as if you drank 1L and didn't work out. Or you eat a Pizza and don't work out.

You'll just be adding extra calories to your system which would go unspent, which means they will be stored as fat.

& one more thing, told by a friend, if one work outs well with taking powder regularly & later, if he stops working out, all body parts [biceps etc] become saggy ? Is it true or myth ?

Taking powder has no effect on being 'saggy' later or not. It just adds fuel to to your diet, a.k.a. it supplements the food you eat. And moreover, if your main food intake is improper, then it doesn't make much sense to take supplement in the first place.

When you go to a gym, you hear a thousand facts. Some of them coming from guys who look well built and are really fit. But only 10% of those facts are actually true, rest are all myths.

It would be wise to follow a proper workout, with a goal to do it with perfect *form* first, and later worry about adding weights and reps. Out of gym, follow a proper diet --> Lots of proteins, decent amount of carbs, less of fats. Though you can vary the diet based on your goals, I was just giving a basic idea.
