As the title suggests, I am interested in knowing what you guys have seen/experienced to be the typical salary scale and role for somebody with 10 years experience in the Software Industry in India.

Please do post city details as well. Details about company is optional and up to you whether you want to post or not.

FYI, I do know about the data available on payscale and glassdoor, but I would like to hear from the guys on these forums :)

yes...I have examples of 9 years in services earning 15 lakhs
and examples of 8 years in Product earning 20 lakhs...

The right switch from a job and role matters here
I'd have to agree, again a lot of variables based on your experience, but the average looks right.

If you don't mind can you people quote max, min and average you guys have seen. Want to see what I am missing out on deciding not to join the IT industry after B.Tech.

Max I have seen in a services company itself is 50 lakhs for a 7 year experienced person (IIM + IIT). So max can be deceiving.
As I said, qualification matters.

10 years expericnce in Google may get you 25-30 lakhs plus perks as well.

I changed jobs last year and moved to a different company after almost 5 years at my previous job and have industry experience of roughly 9 years. Let me say that the compensation you get very well depends on the domain you work in and how accomplished you are in the field. Personally I am in the 35-40 category excluding stock.

But u are not in IT I guess....

There are a lot of factors actually, so if you are looking at a general figure, thumb rule is 1.5 times the experience is what you should be getting on average. Ofcourse some get way more depending on their skill set and some get less. A lot depends on taking the right decisions during their careers and your negotiating skills.

Well, compensation no doubt depends on several factors like domain, qualification, company and other factors as well. But, just wanted to see how much of a variance there is in general and how location matters. For instance people tend to get better packages (at least in numbers) in Benguluru as compared to say Hyderabad, but often fail to notice that Benguluru is a costlier place to live in.

Anyway, you are free to provide any other information that gives context which might be useful to others.

Also, do include any additions on top of base salary as long as its something that you get irrespective of factors. For instance if you get 10% stock 0r maybe a bonus every year irrespective of company or individual performance, you might as well count as part of your core package.

Few bits of info from my side.

General roles for this level in most companies seem to be Tech Lead/Architect/Manager. In a few places it can be Senior Engineer/ SDE 2 etc.

Amazon India's scale for this experience level seems to be 50~65Lac. Previous pay doesn't matter unless its higher.
Google's pay is subjective. they seem to offer in the 30~40 range, but will go higher depending on how badly they want you to join and whether you have any other competing offers.

In software services sector, its highly subjective on previous pay and how badly they need you. Typical scale seems to be between 10~15 lac in Hyderabad. A few companies go a bit higher into to 15~20 bracket to match salary. Very rarely I have seen companies in sector go higher than that for this experience level.

A friend recently joined ADP (Hyderabad) with payscale in the 25~30 bracket. I have heard its fairly higher than their regular scale for the 10 year expr bracket, but he had switched companies a lot and this is his 7th or 8th company in 10 years and he already had a package in the 20~25 bracket.

I have myself switched companies only once in my career so far (both of them are product based) and getting in the 30~35 bracket currently at my second company.

OT

Guess I decided right to not join the Indian IT Industry, no offence meant. I couldn't possibly have survived in normal office conditions of the main recruiting companies viz. Infy/Wipro/TCS. Used to have many altercations with my teachers(the ones who knew nothing and still showed attitude), so couldn't see myself faring any better at these companies. I saw these companies recruiting people who didn't even know how to troubleshoot simple computer problems. Hell, these people are still working in those companies. My brother who is cut from the same cloth, did the same. Though he had the perseverance to keep studying and is on his way to fulfill his dream of being a game programmer. He hasn't even completed his course yet and still has offers available from gaming studios in France.
I on the other hand floundered away whatever I had learned on my own and didn't even complete my B.Tech. I am currently earning in the 8-10 category by running my own business of importing mobiles from US where all I do all day is either watch TV Series on my laptop or sleep. Looking at my mediocre success, my father has opted for VRS and earlier I had plans to enter retail mobile business with the funds he would provide me. But now I have decided to start a commercial Dairy Farm in my village where we have land which we haven't touched in years. I never thought I would be running my own business but thanks to my parents support I have somehow survived. At one time I was very distraught but for me what always worked for me was that I have never thought of success in terms of the money I earned but as how comfortable I am with my current earning.

Money/qualification becomes a problem when the kid starts bawling and you need to get him/her admitted to a good school.

Oh is it ? Well let's see in few years. My kid is very small currently so I will face what you have probably faced already, after few years.

Same here. I am in my field because I love programing and other areas related to computing. I am very picky about where I would like to work because its pointless if you don't have something interesting to work on. As for money, its just a means to an end and people do have ends to meet which in my case is meeting my expenses and clearing off my home loan.

While I would rather get less for working on something I like as compared to getting more by working on something I am not interested in, at the same time, I feel its important that who ever you are working for doesn't start taking advantage of you which is usually either by making you work more or by not compensating you enough.

I am much younger than you. Just started off in IT ;-)
I was just telling you about my observations.

I don't know what the education scenario is in Pune/Mumbai/Hyderabad/Bangalore/Chennai. In Kolkata, there are a few well established english medium schools. Most parents target these because of their brand value and alumni support. These schools are mostly located in residential areas in prime locations. Hence they do not have any land for further expansion. DPS has circumvented this problem by setting up branches in different parts of the city amd ferrying the teachers around in buses. But DPS is a pretty new entrant in Kolkata(less than 10years). The others are setting up buildings in the playgrounds and trying to build more floors on top of the existing buildings.

TL;DR - Too much competition for seats.

A few years ago, parents had to sit for interviews to get their children admitted to school. Nowadays they mention their qualifications and job details in the form. It may seem like a lottery but the school managements decide whom to admit. Donations come into the picture too.

The qualification part was mostly for @rdst_1. The donation related part for you.

Unfortunately, 99% of the kids becoming engineers don't think that. I think this is the most important thing that should be inculcated in our youth, early in their education. My thinking has been same since as early as I can remember. And that is why I couldn't survive my college and dropped out in my 3rd year. I had realized in my first year itself that I could learn more from the books than from the teachers. I would probably have had a degree to my name had I been tolerant enough to withstand their BS. But now when I look back, I am pretty sure I wouldn't have been where I am now, had I made a compromise then.

Sorry for taking the thread OT, but this was something I really wanted to know as I don't ask my friends how much they are making.
