The Witcher 3 - Discussion Thread

Help me out guys. My Witcher 3 PC disc is out for delivery. I have already downloaded the day 1 patch but I am not finding any link to download the patch 1.05. It'd be really tough to wait after the disc is in my hands so planning out all the stuff in advance.

Isn't there a direct link on GOG from where I can download these patches?

Try the torrents, cause on GOG, I dont think you will be able to download the updates without the game files.

I am using RTSS to cap to 30fps. I checked initially in White Orchard and I was getting a stable 30fps. Haven't checked since. Haven't seen any noticeable frame rate drops though.

What if you dont cap it? The reason I ask is that, having a discussion with members on another forum are saying that upcoming GPUs, the increased VRAM (8gb) is important to play at 4k with all settings high. I thought it was a bit over the top.

Playing on R9 290x Crossfire. Very well optimized game. Recorded this last week.

Bro, that video looks gorgeous, what resolution you playing at?

Igni looks awesome at 60fps...

If you are using a gtx 660 like me, just change the graphics settings to ultra and enable hair works.. slow motion all the time.. :p
Just kidding..

LOL

I get tearing if I uncap it, so didn't use that at all.

I believe Witcher 3 (at Ultra) never exceeds 3GB VRAM usage. I personally wouldn't worry about it for another 2 years.

Any PS4 user here? How beautiful does the game look? I still cant convince myself for the PC version that I bought. Thinking of selling the PC version as soon as I get it and buy the PS4 version instead. Want to understand how much eye candy goodies I'll loose. Also the PS4 version is more than double the PC version price so thats another point of consideration.

I don't know why but with the PS4, I tend to enjoy the games more. Had the Gar Cry 4 on PC as well as PS4 and I ended up completing the game twice on the PS4 and rarely played it on the PC.

Digital Foundry was able to achieve PS4 level performance on a PC with a 750 Ti.

So with a 660 Ti, you should be able to do slightly better. As for the cost and personal preference of playing on the PS4, that has to be your call.

Well, if you dont have a controller for the PC, I would definitely started enjoying this game more after I got the controller, especially for the navigation. Also, dont be stuck up on the graphics, the most enjoyable aspect of the game is the story and game play. The PS4 does a very decent job compared to the PC (also known as downgrade gate). If you enjoy playing on the PS4, please do get it, you wont regret it.

There are a few side by side comparison videos on youtube if you care to look. But in general, if you haven't experienced the game in the highest settings on PC, you won't find much amiss with the PS4 version except for the sharpness and overall quality of the textures. The PC version is anyway supposedly downgraded to make the quality differences less apparent, so the PS4 version should not disappoint that much.

Pretty cool video. Wanna know one thing, how are you doing that slow time thing just before you strike? Is that some skill upgrade or you just use strong attack?

Also, for the shield bearers, use axii (the mind control one).

Thanks! That skill comes by default as far as I know. Just hold down strong attack or fast attack when approaching the enemy it will slow down. Hmm yes, should have used some signs on the guards with shields :)

LOL. Hairworks is pretty bad for me too :D

Thanks! :) Had to play at 1080p during recording but usually I play at 2560x1440.

You could play the game on PC using a controller... Even the DS4 controller can be hooked up to a PC... I myself use the 360 controller in PC and enjoy the game...
Cost was the only deciding factor for me to choose between the PC n PS4 versions...
Also I have seen a bunch of youtube videos where the game on PS4 runs between 20-28 fps... The quality is somewhat similar to PC medium settings I guess...
So if you have a decent GPU, give it a try on PC... I play on low settings, capped to 30fps using a gtx660... The game still looks pretty awesome and I can post some screen shots if you want...

I dont think you could go wrong with either platform, as Lord Nemesis already mentioned one can take a look at the side by side comparison videos on youtube for further detailed. Like I said before the game's USP is the storyline and I quite like the gameplay in this edition too, based on your budget, you could choose to enjoy the game on any platform.

PS- I am also using the Xbox 360 controller with the PC, I bought just for this game, and there were reports that you could use the X1 controller with Windows, I chose to go with the tried and tested controller.

There are two possible pain points on the PS4 as compared to PC for this game.

1) Loading times - loading times on PC (especially with an SSD) are very very low but I've seen lots of complaints for loading times on PS4/XB1.

2) Inventory management - switching from controller to mouse is seamless, so I can game with my 360 controller but also control my inventory using kb/m.

I think the XB1 controller can be plugged in directly but the future wireless XB1 receiver that MS is going to release is only going to work on Windows 10.

Skellige is beautiful. But the game is starting to feel like it is too long now. 70+ hrs and only 33% complete. Only going to concentrate on the main quest chain and maybe some gear hunts from now on.

The game is working well on my 660Ti/Core i5/8GB combo. Running most of the setting at high. The controls are little troubling though. The analog sticks don't really show up as being very precise. Still loved every bit of it. Completed few missions already and just trying few ways to stock up the powers fast.

Finally got my copy. The game is freaking beautiful to look at, downgrade or no. The Galaxy client doesn't have a screenshot system like Steam does it?[DOUBLEPOST=1434396904][/DOUBLEPOST]Well, added it to Steam as a non Steam game and now can press F12 for screenshots. Game looks good, even in medium. Tried high, FPS was around 30, switched to medium for 40-45 fps. What build are you guys going? Thinking of making a pure sign, item and bombs build this time.

The controls will take some getting used to, like I suggested earlier, if you hook up a controller, it would be slightly easier and more enjoyable.

The game is absolutely fab, as I have been maintaining throughout. I am going primarily with the signs build, with a mixture of swordsmanship.

Well, finally managed to complete the game! 105Hrs and 54% completed. After a certain point the secondary quests, contracts and treasure hunts seemed too distracting and I just ignored them and powered through the main quest lines. Overall, it is an amazing game.
Positives:
  1. The main quest was extremely well written and interesting throughout. After a while, I had hard time spending time doing the other quests, because I really wanted to see what was going to happen in the main story. Even the new characters, who were never in the books like the Bloody Baron, Crones, Priscilla etc were all very well made.
  2. The facial animations of the main characters is something unbelievable. Ciri, Zoltan, Yennefer, Triss all are so well done and voiced brilliantly. In fact, only Geralt looks and sounds a little bit wooden, but that is how he is even in the books. But, seriously, the voice acting and facial animations are absolutely top-notch in this game. Even relatively minor characters like Cerys, Bloody Baron, Priscilla, Crach etc were so well done.
  3. Gwent!! It is awesome!

Negatives:
Now, there is a whole list of minor negatives and the game would definitely be better with a CDPR style "Enhanced Edition" update.
  1. The controls. The ****ing controls! I dont know how, but for a third game in a row, CDPR managed to screw up the controls. Bad controls and bad inventory is now a trademark feature of Witcher games for me. I dont mean about combat here. I dont care much for combat in RPGs. But, just general movements etc. Geralt takes way too long to stop, turns very slowly and is absolutly annoying to control in closed confined spaces especially near ladders. Then, there is the ****ing horse! The horse seems like it has a collision box of a tank. Sometimes while galloping, it will randomly halt because of some tree/pole which is clearly some distance to its side. Taking the horse over a bridge is another challenge, especially in races.
  2. The inventory. It is somewhat annoying. There are not enough categories, for one. They definitely need a separate tab for potions/oils/bombs/decoctions. My second tab is filled with odd notes named "Muddy Note" or "Torn Note" etc and I have no idea if I have read it before or not. Same with books. They definitely need to add some indication for that. They also need to add some way of sorting the items. In my case, I dropped all weapons and armors I was carrying and sold off all the pelts I had. Still, the inventory showed I was carrying 90 out of the max 130. Now, I have no idea what is taking so much weight and to find out, I need to go to each individual square and look at what weight it is. This is especially tedious considering there are well over a hundred squares across the tabs with most of them having weight like 0.23 or 0.14 some random number like that! They need to take the SkyUI from Skyrim as the base and add/remove stuff from there. Maybe, someone will make a mod for it.
  3. The scale. This is one game I honestly feel, that could have benefited from a smaller scale. I know most people will disagree on this. But, I genuinely feel the game world was too big and they had to make so many meaningless quests/contracts/treasure hunts just to fill up the empty space.
  4. The loading screens. For a game that boasted of NO loading screens at all, I somehow had to stare at the loading screen for weirdly long times. The reason for this is again the huge world. I feel like I'm just repeating myself now. But, because the world is so large, you are pretty much forced to use fast travel way too often which means loading screens. The other issue here is how quests are distributed. You don't have a quest hub kind of thing here, where you go to a village, get some quests to be done in nearby surroundings and then you move on to next hub. This is actually a good thing. But somehow, the alternative CDPR have used seemed too tiresome. You get a quest, which will have one objective on one side of the map and the other one somewhere entirely else. This is mostly in Velen and Skellige though. The quests in Novigrad were pretty well laid out.
  5. The FOV. Once again, CDPR screw up the FOV. I was playing on my PC monitor with a controller and it was so annoying to not be able to see stuff. Plus, there was the stupid witcher senses which reduced it even more!! Combined with the awkward movement controls, it made it a chore.
  6. Over reliance on "Witcher Senses". This seems like a repeat of the "Detective Mode" from the Batman games. The game used it everywhere in every damn quest! The worst thing is you cannot just toggle it and the using it reduces the already small FOV even worse. They really should have been more creative with its use. It just seems lazy to use the same mechanic for every single thing.

Well, overall the game is amazing and one of the best gaming experiences I've had. I just feel lucky I got to experience two amazing games GTA5 and W3 back to back. The rest of the year is going to feel pretty empty now. It may seem that I am complaining too much, but the complaints are mostly minor. The Witcher games are loved and enjoyed for their deep mature story and dialogues and in this department, CDPR did not disappoint. I thoroughly enjoyed the game from start to finish. I cannot wait for the expansions to come out, especially Toussaint. That would be something to behold. The way the books describe it, I am sure CDPR will capture of the magic of this place. I hope this game gets some interest from the modding community as well. That could really push this to a perfect game.

Now for some spoilers regarding the ending:
Did anyone understand what actually Ciri did after she entered the portal to "stop the frost"? I mean, the way the conversation went, I thought she had to sacrifice herself to stop it or something. But, in my ending, she is somehow alive after that. She becomes a Witcheress too!! Although I was very happy she got what she always wanted, I couldn't help feel it was somewhat contrived. Like people would sad Ciri died, so they just brought her back and gave her a happy ending bollywood style. Maybe, I missed something very obvious, because that is very unlike CDPR.

Even thought i hate it, I think the movement thing was intentional to give a bit more realistic movement feel.
Personally i have not felt any issues with horse yet.

Right now just finished my main quest at crookback bog and doing some sides. Level 12.
Abt gwent is it a must play ? ... goes it give any bonuses or does it affect story in anyways ?
