Folks,

Not sure if this is the right forum, but any guidance will be appreciated.

I am looking for electric scooter for my son who is 16 years old. The ones with less than 25km and does not need a license to drive.

The location is Bangalore specifically HSR layout. Ability do service is a factor for purchase.

So many brands and confused : Hero Electric, Ampere, Okinawa and so on.

Any guidance will be highly appreciated.

Hi Saidu, this may not be exactly what you were looking for but have you considered getting him an e-bike? it's basically a bicycle with an electric motor assist. Won't go too fast.

If you don't mind me asking, why are you looking for an electric scooter which will be locked at that speed? I can understand that you don't need a license etc etc but this just honestly looks like a waste of money. If your son is 16 years old right now then it's only 2 more years before he can legally drive a vehicle 100cc and above. What you're asking is more or less a yulu miracle which is plentyful around in bangalore. I just don't really see any pros at all to be honest buying an escooter.

Actually, he has to use his bus to go his school for +1 now, which is around 6km from home. The bus costs around 30K per year and it takes the travel time around 70 minutes owing to its pickup route. Average cost of the scooter is around 60K, which easily covers his two year bus fare. Also, in a scooter even going at 20km per hour, he can easily reach his school in 15 minutes, also stay late if necessary.

You are right, yulu may be the right choice, but getting one early in the morning or while coming back near his school may be a challenge(off sarjapur road)

If it is just 6km, why not a regular bicycle? You can get a very nice bicycle in your budget.
==========>
speed limit to keep him safe
range limit to not let him go too far
load limit so he cant carry pillion
all sound like pros to me
(Just kidding:tearsofjoy::tearsofjoy:)
+ Savings
+ Healthy
+ environment friendly

If not for all of the above reasons, you should consider bicycle for the bottom 2 reasons. And I hope he gets used to it & continues to use in future.

Too much luggage. One lunch box, 1 water bottle and a full bag of books. As a matter of fact, I do have a BTWin rockrider and BTWIn original 5. He tried both couple of days and unable to cope up with it.

how many books are there ? ,by the time i came into 10th i just used a 2 x200 page ITC classmate , one as pure rough book and one for acting that i was writing ,text books were shared with immediate neighbor he used to bring text book for monday to wed and i used to bring for remaining days :p
On a serious note , your son is eligible for MCWOG license ,give him a panzy scooter or a good one for the whole family

Really. Is that too much. I used to carry both me and my brother and our 2 bags, water bottles etc on a single bike when I was just 10 and continued using a cycle till I went to college. I think it was very common for our generation and the only reason I think it is alright for kids not to use cycles to go to school these days was because of our traffic conditions.

Neither of these bicycles is suitable for road, so I am not surprised. Both are build like MTBs (and prob have 26" wide tires). For road commute, you should be looking at bicycles with 700c narrow tires.

It is indeed too much. You cannot compare your life experience at least couple decades back to life of kids in 2020. It is very different. We may have parents and grandparents who had to walk more distance to go to school. You don't want to ride a bicycle for 6 freaking kms two times a day for 6 days a week for school commute when you already are short of energy and time due to extreme academic stress and competition from all sides of life after you enter +1. Add to that maybe he has to go for coaching classes too, on sundays. These days +1 +2 students don't even get a little time for sports and games. please give a thought to mental health as well. Yes it is really good for your physical health and fitness but is it a viable practical option? Definitely not.

p.s: science and cs stream in context.

@saidu Get an e-scooter or a normal scooter whatever fits your bill. he'll thank you everyday.

this prepares you for your professional life

Do a DIY eBike setup! You can teach him and learn to do your own service and maintenance. Should workout a lot cheaper than commercial options too. Will the load be too much on an ebike?

I've never quite understood this logic of suffering in formative years translating into professional success. I honestly feel this type of thinking is very counter productive. If the global pandemic has taught me anything, it is that one must not forgo current convenience/happiness chasing some possible future happiness. (Obviously within reason).
