Really? Seen the American ambassadors twitter feed in France lately. Nothing to see. So why are the Russians protesting? Think again
Asked not to leave the country. Haha!
He is not a fool to have been avoiding the whole of Europe for the last few months (I read this on reddit, not sure of the authenticity) because of this case and then suddenly takes a private jet to France of all places where the case is from. I am pretty sure he fears getting killed in Russia. Everything else is political theater.

The American silence is telling.

A precedent has been set here.

If France can arrest head of telegram on x charges then who is to say they cannot do it to the head of YT, Google, Facebook & Twitter for y pretext if they visit France ? Or anywhere in the EU?

Job of the American ambassador is to ensure corporate American interests do not face adverse conditions in the country they are posted at and/or prevent any laws that threaten these corporations bottom lines from being enacted.

It's the Russians that are in an awkward position if Pavel talks. So saying he is trying to escape the Russians is your typical leftie narrative at best and disinfo at worst.

No less than the French president has said he has broken french laws. So they have a legal case and can plausibly deny any political motivation.

Also the defection theory presumes he knew he would be arrested. His plane's flightpath suggests he only found out at the last moment.

Company tweet admits surprise at the arrest as he frequently flies to Europe.

Telegram denies not cooperating with authorities. Clearly they are implying safe harbour protection for the company as applies with other messaging platforms & telcos

The judicial investigation started a month ago in which the accused was unnamed. See attached and scroll to third page for english

I think its clear he didn't know he would be arrested. Because the moment that is made public he will never go to any country where he will be arrested. So they left the person unnamed in the investigation and after they caught him mention oh yeah we have this investigation.

The company would have been contacted about complaints but I don't think they were ever told the boss would be arrested for the reason mentioned above.

.. or at least it seems to me

TG content moderation is a joke, they have even less chances of successfully claiming "safe harbour protection" than some well known file sharing websites used by many pirates (at least they take down files within minutes of receiving DMCA notice).

They said they comply with industry standards and have removed content in the past

And should any country find telegram is not complying they can always suspend operations in their country like Brazil did recently

Due to Telegram's non-compliance with the court order, the judge said telecommunications firms in the country should start to suspend access to the messaging service and downloading of the app.
They will see same message as we do when accessing tiktok content. Any country can do this.

What was the need to arrest him?

Can't ban the app because senior french officials use it including the French president. Conceivably all his private chats can be seen by Durov. French intel seems to be ok with this

The difference between theory & practice. Nowadays majority of ppl find it easier to use TG for piracy than public torrents, that should tell you something. TG doesn't even have a fraction of content moderators of FB so how can it possibly comply with industry standards in reality.

Easy to bypass using VPN which are also increasingly coming under attention due to their usage in not so legal activities making many vpn providers stop supporting torrents/port forwarding feature on their services.

To send a msg to future wannabe who think they can build a billion dollar empire based on not following the laws. Similar thing happened years ago with kim dot com of now defunct megaupload but I guess not many ppl remember it now.

You cannot keep profiting from user content while taking zero accountability for it when it is your platform that is being used to spread abuse and hatred.
All platforms including telegram and twitter already take down content. There are too many users to track every single thing. Is it ok to arrest ambani if someone uses Jio network to make calls to plan a terror attack?

Also, if Durov is responsible for his 1 billion users and crimes one of his user commits then isn't Macron also responsible for millions of french citizens and crimes some of them commit? As the head of the country and its law enforcement, he can stop crime but france is not crime free so lets arrest him too?

So you think it's ok for supposedly democratic governments to go rogue, have double standards, and arrest people to "send a msg"? Ironic (or is it?) for someone who is advocating for the rule of the law.

They will try to make a example out of telegram and then musk (X.com) will be next.

I guess you don't know what "rogue govt" means. I will give you a hint, go to kremlin or Tiananmen square while wearing a t-shirt mocking their supreme leaders then see what happens. Durov can still hire fancy lawyers & live more comfortably than 99% of the population whether inside or outside prison.

What has fancy lawyers and living comfortably got to do with the point about them setting a precedent by questionable processes. It's like goons threatening someone to get a particular outcome. The fact that more authoritarian countries exist is beside the point.

The point is, even billionaires with fancy lawyers & ability to live comfortably even inside prison have to bow under the rule of law else ppl would start saying law is only for the the avg joe with not enough money/connections.

It's very clear that it's less about rule of law and more about going against platforms which don't give let some people in governments control the flow of information and ideas.
Instagram has had similar problems since forever.
When was the last time you heard famous persons announcing news/share stuff over TG compared to IG? Instagram has similar problem true but it also has dozens of times more resources both manual & automated for content moderation unlike TG where it seems there is sometimes just a few guys managing reports from entire countries by themselves. Also, when was the last time you saw pirates advertising full HD latest movies downloads on twitter IDs with hundred thousands+ followers?
