After what time is too much sound considered public nuisance?

Ok, We have a cribbling neighbour and carpenter's work is goin on, we need to finish the work soon, so these guys come at 7 in morning and do work till 9in evening.
Previously they worked till 12am in nite, but due to his request we complied and made it till 9pm. Now this guy is getting greedy and wants the work to go on from 10am to 6pm.:@

What i want to know is, is there any timing beyond which such noise is considered public nuisance? Is it there in any law or something?


Facts:-
1) This guy or his family member has no problem, disease or watever.
2) He has a history of poking nose in shit and harassing people.
3) The noise is not much jus the usual hammer once in a while after manual cutting.
4) We are doing it in our own building and this guy is not given any trouble watsoever.
 
He can do nothing for the normal carpenter job noise. So just chill and get your work done and if he says any thing send him a bill for using your services as an alarm clock charges :P
 
I think you should be allowed to work till midnight before its considered a nuisance but at least in India I guess 10pm is a safe bet. Don't budge more than that
 
Noise level after 10 pm is generally considered a nuisance. You have already accepted his previous request. No need to entertain him more. People like him should be shown their places and made to realize that they cannot get whatever they want all the time.
 
unfortunately even if the guy or his family members have no disease or whatsoever, you are creating a nuisance by getting work done in your home.

think from his point of view. if someone was constantly banging or cutting wood with an electric saw for 8 hours you will go nuts with the noise. if you want to hear tv in your drawing room you will have to turn up the volume and more volume will actually bring more pressure on your nerves. i hope you get the point i'm making. noise in any form is bad for the nerves.

Not trying to take sides! There need not be a law for these small things. One has to decide for himself ethically and morally what is right.

if you ask me, Most people come after 6PM from office and they want to take some rest and peace at home after a hectic day. So annoying noise at this time may be irritating. If the carpentry work is not so time critical for you or you dont have any other concern may be you can adjust.

Put yourself in his place and visualize the situation

yeah you do have to consider that really. imagine you coming home after a tiring day at work and you are greeted by constant loud banging and drilling.

if he does have a habit of causing trouble everywhere, just tell him that if you dont allow the carpenters to work for a longer time, it would take more days to complete the job. so either you allow them to complete it sooner or you can enjoy hearing the noise for more days, take your pick. :P

Yeah, thats what we're doing at present, the problem is he comes and shouts at the men working there..Im now planning to go and sit there from 7pm-9pm and give him a surprise today incase he comes and shouts..Taken too much of his shit..

thanks..family members are of the same opinion, problem is where we live now, there is no such problem, the people are very cooperative and understanding so we dont have much training in this aspect..

How would you get work done without any noise?

I mean im not banging for fun or anything, neither is it music or something, there's serious, time bound, one time critical work goin on and its not going to last forever.

Previousl his daughter had exams and building was being constructed, and on his request we made these guys work 11am-6pm, instead of 6am to 9pm,6 hrs lost everyday, and this also threw us way out of schedule:@ We've always thought things from the aspect you mentioned, but now he's stretching it..

@Viral, Agent, and bublez:- I understand that aspect, most of the banging is done in afternoon, these guys have the instructions from the architect/interior himself, but an essential nail here and there doesnt really count in noise..

Thing is, we're too cooperative, yet it doesnt satisfy this guy, thus im asking if there's any legal compulsion regarding this, else we continue as we want..
 
ask him to pay for more carpenters so that they can work according to his timings and the work can be finished in ur schedule :P

I can see your predicament and I had to face similar problems working in civil and since he is not a lawyer I don't think he is going to pursue anything of that sort.

Usually most of the people who are aggressive like this don't back down easily, so one one the things you could try is to threaten him that you will work till late(but don't actually follow through with that) if he continues bothering the workers and also that if he wants to yell at someone then yell at you and not the workers. On occasion posturing does work out against these kind of people.
If you can get get someone else from the neighborhood who you know is going to support you to mediate then that also might quiet him down for a while.

Actually if you figure out a more tactful way to handle this then do post back coz I will definitely be of use for me in the future.
 
If you can relocate some of your work esp. the grinding and cutting outside your vicinity for eg: say, the terrace/parking lot or outside the building, it might help a bit. The grinding noise is usually unbearable after a while.

However, it's not as if you have shooed him off or completely refused to take notice of his irritation. He should also talk to you respectfully and understand your concerns. It might help if you ask him to put himself in your place and give a solution on how to get the work done. After all, prolonging the work is not in your interest also. You want it to get over as much as he does.
 
to prevent this whenever there is any work at my place , the carpenters are told to go downstairs and do the cutting , hammering job in the car park area and only the needfull job be done at home.....

doing it on the terrace is also an option but please avoid it to avoid future trouble...u never know when the guy staying on the last floor turns up and says now / later - because of ur hammering work my ceiling got leaking because of small cracks on the terrace flooring :O

8pm is considered to be the best bet....in ur case ur just leasing an hour extra.

if things really go out of the line and u start getting bugged a lot......go to the building secretary / committee members and take a letter in writing saying u would have going on between this and this hours....next time ur questioned , show it on the face.
 
^^ picking a fight with the workers instead of approaching the owner is imo a bit of a violation. People like that are usually out for a fight.
 
No need to pay too much attention to such people. Just tell him that if you cut down on the working hours, you will be bothering him for longer period as it will take longer to get the work done.

9PM is just fine. its not like you are going to have these workers all year around. Usually its once every few years that a major work is done, and neighbours need to understand that. Those who are too cocky about such things needs to be ignored. Legally he cant do anything unless you go beyond 10PM.

Everyone needs to understand that its only once in a while that people are going to get their house renovated. And little bit of tolerance does not hurt.
 
Also you can let him know if he wants you can get the work done round the clock and wrap up faster.

But to get the work done fast you would be getting industrial drills, hammers and cutters along with a siren to let the carpenters know it is time for break :P
 
I believe you'll soon be moving to the house where all this work is going on.. Remember that this very same person who is causing "trouble" is going to be your neighbour for a long long time. Best bet is to talk to the person concerned, and explain him your situation and ask him to adjust for a few more days. Hopefully, he'll understand. If not, then continue with your work without caring about him.
IT won't help if you are gonna pick a fight with your neighbour even before you are shifting there.
