Very much interested. Pardon my ignorance but who is Brendon ? :P

Requesting someone in Gurgaon/Delhi to help in using Nikon D5100 for:

1. A bag full of Thanks. OR

2. A fee. :)

Amen to that, he always has some bag of tricks to use your DSLR to full potential, and he backs it up with theoretical explanation too :)

I think he should take over the TE photography school with Joe's retirement :)

Ok you guys are making me blush. :ashamed:

And whoever said I do this for free ? I always demand a treat of 1 beer. :D

Ok jokes apart the best way to learn is from another photographer who has used DSLRs before. That can be anyone who has been shooting for a year or two.

I wouldn't mind helping out but unfortunately I stay in Mumbai while you are in Delhi. :(

Do see if you can join a local photography club. Learning from other guys is both fun and effective. Learning from books and videos is effective as well but not so much fun. :)

@Aces - Err I can talk anyones head out on gear, lenses and controls but not so much on how to take a good photo. :P

So my Nikon S4 died on me yesterday. So I am thinking of an upgrade to an SLR.

My grandfather was a Pro photographer. He had a nikon system, two lenses still reman - a "105" and "500" lens. These were used with a Nikon film SLR. Would they work with the latest Nikon DSLRs? In addition are these lenses worth putting money down on a D90? I don't have the exact model numbers yet as the lenses are in bangalore while I am in pune.

Or am I overthinking it, and just get a 1100D + Kit lens + 50mm prime and save a bunch of cash.

The two lenses you mentioned might be be gem lenses... might be not :P

Until and unless you dont tell the full nomenclature of those lenses, it is hard to tell how worthy those lenses are..

Yes, you will be able to mount them on your DSLR as nikon didnt changed its mount...

pretty sure those will be MF lenses :ohyeah:

If lenses come out to be worthy, surely go for Nikon... if not, you are free to choose!!

The lenses are:

Spiratone Minitel f/8 500mm mirror lens

The second is a sigma f2.8D 105mm macro lens

Googled them, and they didn't pop out as OMFG lenses.

So I will probably go for a canon setup, although the D5100 looks very tempting.

^^ The Sigma 105mm f2.8 lens is a pretty good lens and a new one costs around 21k. The 500mm lens is a pretty bad lens though.

However the Sigma wont AF with the low end DSLR bodies so you will need to get the Nikon D90 at least if you want AF.

Hmm, a 550D+ 18-55m IS kit lens (34k) + Canon 55-250mm IS. Very good VFM combo.

The Canon 55-250mm IS lens allows you to click pseudo macro photos as well.

ah, I have the photography guru helping me.

I am pretty new to all this. What does IS signify and how much will 55-250 cost?

Been mulling it over, have no clue what to do yet.

D90 + 18-55 lens + f/1.8 50mm prime + the sigma 105mm macro + the other lens = 56k

OR

Canon 550D + 18-55 IS + 55-250 IS + f/1.8 50mm Prime + tripod for roughly the same amount

:Comp3:

^^ Where are you getting the D90 combo for that price? Looks a good deal to me. It would be better than the 550D combo I suppose. But the Canon combo shouldn't cost you more than 45 to 46k.
