It appears the battery of my trusty old 800VA UPS has given up finally. The UPS was purchased sometime during August 2007 and has served me ever since. Until now, it was connected to a 40" LCD, the PS3, a DAC and a basic HT system. Since yesterday evening, the 'Replace Battery' LED indicator has been flashing RED after the quick test once it is switched on.

Link for the UPS

I dismantled the battery cover and removed the battery after unplugging the connector. The battery model is RBC32. However, I am unable to figure the Ampere-hour rating of this battery to order a replacement. Nor does it seem that APC has a authorised distributor in the city. Since it weighs close to 5 Kg, ordering it from elsewhere will call for expensive shipping rates so I wouldn't want to do that either.

If someone has replaced the battery of this unit before, could you point me to the Ah rating of this unit? Here is the snap of the OEM battery if it helps.

One more query - say the OEM battery is rated at 7Ah, if I am getting a replacement from another manufacturer which is rated at 9Ah, would it be fine if I am using this battery?

TIA.

Well it basically has 2x 7AH batteries.
You can use 9ah batteries since they have the same dimensions(assuming exide data is correct). But the charge time will increase.

Arun thanks a lot! I was expecting your response anyway. :P

So 9Ah batteries shouldn't be a problem? How did you know it was 7Ah? Was it mentioned anywhere on the sticker or have you replaced the battery of this unit?

If Exide offers me a replacement which does not have a similar connector, what do I do? I see 3 terminals there. I thought batteries had only 2! :ashamed:

What is that 3rd terminal for? Any clue?

Get 2x 7Ah or 2x 9Ah from your local exide dealer, I did the same for my ups and its working fine now. I got the 7Ah batteries.

Remove that sticker and separate the 2 batteries, fixing them back should be easy. If you need help give me a buzz.

^Alright Sandeep! Thanks a lot for the input. Have a local battery retailer who stocks Exide and Amaron batteries. Shall ask him. :)

and what about the old one? I don't want to dispose it in the trash since the rag-pickers keep searching it quite often. :ashamed:

yes, get hold of the 9 AH battery if the dimensions are the same. The dealer would take back your old battery @ Rs.10/amp capacity. So if your battery is 7 AH, he would take it for 70 bucks or at least for 50 bucks.

The new 7 AH exide powersafe costs 625 here in chennai, deduct Rs.50 so you would get a brand new battery for 575. Try negotiating.

The 7Ahs should cost 650bux or so. Your local dealer will give 50-75bux for the old ones :P Let him have it.

Well i have no idea whats the third terminal for.
From the countless times i see those batteries i know they are either a 7ah or a 9ah further more APC rated capacity listed is 164 V-AH(actual measure capacity). Which means its 24v x 7Ah=168

You need to disassemble the existing batteries from the series connector tray. You will notice that each battery only has 2 terminals.

Gannu, the 3rd terminal is a dummy terminal. Don't worry, just get the batteries everyone else is recommending. From the original battery unit, you will need to remove the sticker and the grey plate will reveal the clips (red and black wires) on either side. Just un-clip the terminals and replace the batteries and you're set.

Don't get these from an authorised APC reseller. I got fooled once. I got batteries from them and was charged Rs. 2000/- for the same unit which had 2 7ah exide batteries which would cost me Rs. 625/- per piece in the market.

Woah! Thanks a bunch for the replies guys! :D

Will get 2 units of the Exide 12V 9AH replacements. Shall keep this thread posted of the changes. :)

Exide batteries are usually 7 ah , i have never seen 9ah exide batteries , amaron are 7.2 ah, exide batteries usually last about 1 year, i usually replace my ups batteries with exide, once i decided to try amaron it only lasted about a month.

Forgot to update! Got pulled into the KZ3 epicness! :ashamed:

So got hold of the Exide Chloride Safepower 12V 7Ah CS 7-12 batteries. The neighbourhood battery dealer offered 50 Rs. each for the dead batteries and charged me 750 Rs. with a year's warranty for the new ones. Came home, connected the respective terminals and used some duct-tape to hold the 2 batteries together in position. Plugged the terminal to the UPS and all is well. :D

Many thanks to all of them who helped me out promptly. :)

I got the same things but I paid a little less :P
Charge the batteries for atleast 24 hours and then Discharge the battery. do this a couple of times. The ups needs to calibrate to the new batteries.

^Oh alright. Discharge as in let it run on the backup right? Will do that later. Don't want my systems to conk out in the middle of KZ3. :P

Well discharging a sealed gel battery unnecessary isn't going to do any good.
Exide and amaron quanta battery data say that a sealed pb battery life may reduce by 50% with just a few 100% discharge cycles. These batteries aren't meant for cyclic use with deep discharges.

I'm not sure about APC, but in my TripLite UPS (2KVA) which has a similar dual battery arrangement (but x4 for 48V) with a coupling plate in between, the third terminal is used for sensing the temperature of the battery. A single PTC sensor resides on the coupling plate (similar to the grey one in the picture posted above) which senses the battery temperature and feeds it to the controller on the main board.

Yeah deep cycle discharge are bad for batteries, but regular discharge of 20% capacity extends the life of the battery. I have done enough research on choosing batteries for my APC SUA1000 UXI.

You got the Chloride or the PowerSafe (EP Series) model as linked by adder? The Exide Chloride Safepower AFAIK is a lower variant and if I remember correctly it was only Rs 500 or so when I went to buy a replacement battery for my APC 650 UPS. I went for the Exide PowerSafe EP1234W 9AH for Rs 850.
