Wanted to get something nice, I've seen her using boats and cheap JBLs quite a lot , they tend not last long. Have heard several complaints that one ear stops working in a few months, something as such.
I have been using a boat rockerz 600 since 2017 and they still sound great. Only ear cushions need to be replaced. I understand your gesture and reading what @quaratineinthesejeans has written about the sennheiser pxc 550 ii , you can go for them. They will last long and will scale well with time, as they provide both the convenience of Bluetooth and sound quality of wired headphones. Sony is good, but it is more like the Samsung of headphones, you will get something decent for your money but not value for your money as you are also paying for the brand value. I was also looking for a sony discman, but it's not worth it. You may find a cassette walkman at ebay or amazon store but it' s newly made Chinese crap.
I also looked for boombox cassette players they are all chinese, Quality products are obsolete now.
My 90s music system worked for almost 16-17 years and I still got many hindi english cassettes, but same like you, these cassettes are all 20+ yr old now. some are even 30+ years.
In general people usually seek professional services to restore their personal VHS tapes and recordings of some marriage party or celebrations. As for the audio tapes we do have CDS DVD and digital copies though we miss something musically. When someone is willing to teach and is providing a fair quotation for restoration I think there is no harm in restoring old audio cassettes for someone who is residing nearby. People like these are really doing a great job but apparently it's worthless for most of the people.

Even those 3 or 5 CD changers Mini HI-fi by sony , LG all gone. Now they 're manufacturing these stupid looking portable single unit party speakers and soundbars.
yes, I do own one of these Panasonic SC-UA7 (sounds very good) but when audio is recorded in stereo wtf will these portable boxes do.

Cassettes sound more organic, kind or juicier or addictive.
Nothing special we can do for these cassettes, best we can do is to keep playing them and store in dry and cool place avoiding the only enemy (moisture).

I bought this primarily for streaming Spotify in my room while I work during the day. I needed a no nonsense, hassle free setup and the chain is as follows:
Droid Tab (with Spotify) + Auris bluMe + Marantz PM5005 + MICCA MB42
The MICCA's are soon to be replaced with Missions. The Auris sounds quite lovely and there hasn't been any annoying signal drops or hiccups while it streams music from my Tab. I keep the Tab volume at full and the Marantz at about 9 o'clock position. Suffices. A comfortingly warm beautiful Marantz synergy envelops my work-cave.
