Hamilton had gained the advantage of momentum by cutting the corner, he was suppose to back off to lose that advantage and he didnt nor did he give kimi back the place easily, kimi had to work his way past him, if you have the race on hdd you can see that kimi has to acclerate aggressively to catch up to lewis and lays a lot of rubber down on the track..., If he didnt have the momentum he couldn't have overtaken kimi so easily there, he wasnt in the slipstream for even a second... If he just backed off then he could have easily overtaken kimi later because his car was better in the wet..
The rule doesn't say anything about losing advantage ... the rule clearly says that you have to relinquish your position if you have gained it by cutting a chicane ...

Here's some excellent on-board footage -

Dailymotion - www.FormulaMag.com - Hamilton-Kimi, a video from Budhardt. F1, Belgium, 2008, Hamilton, ÑõûьóøÑÂ

Enjoy. :D

Haha, Hamster didnt break to let kimi go as he claims, full acceleration :P

Also Kimi's Ferrari visible ahead in the corner when he cut the chicane. Now what does those claiming foul have to say? Even I didnt notice this to be honest during live broadcast to be honest and star sports didnt show these clips.

Shripad, I believe the DailyMotion clip linked by Apex shows Lewis going off track (not spinning) to avoid running into Rosberg who was rejoining the track at that moment. Kimi just breezed through between Lewis (who was going in the right direction but on the grass) on Kimi's left and Rosberg (who was at an almost 90 degree angle to the other two cars) on Kimi's right.

Oh, and I'm not a fan of Lewis (but Alonso)

Yup, saw that also. From the clips that they aired on star sports the shot was showing hamilton's car off the rack facing the kimi. It felt like he spun, but from this shot its clear that went off the track and skidded a bit. Thats the reason Kimi is not being investigated. Hamilton was off the track when he overtook him. And from the clip you can clearly see that hamilton didnt break for even a millisecond to let kimi go after he jumped chicane. Its kimi and ferrari acceleration on straight that got him through. And I am pretty sure this footage is what resulted in 25sec penalty to hamilton.

He gained the advantage & overtook kimi by cutting a chicane, the rules do not allow gaining illegal advantages by cutting a chicane... why do you think he wad penalized?

Hamilton didn't break? You expect me to believe Kimi overtook him by "his sheer determination and the decades of engineering brilliance that went into that Ferrari F1 car" alone?

If anyone has eyes and ears he/she would have noticed that hamilton didn't lift of the throttle, forget about braking :P. Just listen to the engine. Should be enough proof.

He didn't brake one bit bro, he got onto the straight and floored it, watch the vid ;)

Just watch the damn video Apex linked on the last page :P

Unless you think that McLaren has top secret breaks that somehow makes engine rave at 19k RPM :P

He didnt break at all after jumping chicane and kept accelerating.

Seriosly i just had same argument with my friend (Lewis' Fanboy).. I told him just god damn listen to the sound from onboard vid..

anyways as MSC Monaco incident..i don't there two extremes are ever gonna agree on this issue...

Bloody Niki Lauda always needs a chance for mudslinging.. Never happy with anything.. Be it in any controversy, he needs someone to blame everything on..

wow!! that video is showed it all!!

When i was watching the race live i felt something was weird when Kimi took a while to get by Hamilton after the chicane....but i felt maybe it was Hamilton who backed off a lil later n just enuf to let Kimi by....

But this video has completely blown Hamiltons cover!! Ron Dennis said their data showed Hamilton backed off and was abt 6km/hr slower than Kimi...I think Hamilton was slower because he went off on the to grass and not because he backed off....

God knows which telemetry Mclaren were looking at because on the straight u can clearly hear than Mclaren acclerating hard!!

Probably because the Ferrari genuinely has 6kmph faster straight line speed

by backing off they mean he has to lose his advantage gained by cutting the corner!!!

zomg even if he lifted, it wasnt enough period.

Backing off doesnt mean sitting in the slipstream,

and he did just that.

Everyone knows F2008 is faster than MP4-23, simply bcuz F2008 is low on down force.

Hamilton SHOULD have backed off enuff to neutralize any advantage gained from straight lining chicane. He out braked himself so by no way he should have been able to get in Kimi`s slipstream.

McLaren CEO Martin Whitmarsh said: "From the pit wall, we then asked Race Control to confirm that they were comfortable that Lewis had allowed Kimi to repass, and they confirmed twice that they believed that the position had been given back in a manner that was 'okay'.

"If Race Control had instead expressed any concern regarding Lewis's actions at that time, we would have instructed Lewis to allow Kimi to repass for a second time."

Petition Link->Sign the Belgium Grand Prix - Lewis Hamilton was unfairly stripped of his win Petition

More than 32500 signatures were submitted at 12.30am on Wednesday.

The petition was launched after Hamilton was demoted to third place following the stewards' decision to hand him a retrospective 25-second penalty for cutting a chicane while trying to overtake Kimi Raikkonen.

The petition, addressed to the FIA, states: "We the undersigned insist that the FIA reconsider the decision made to add 25 seconds to the finishing time of Lewis Hamilton (McLaren-Mercedes) in the Formula 1 Belgium Grand-Prix (07th September 2008).

"We believe the decision that has been made to be wrong and strongly urge you to revert back to the original final classifications. The rules state that Lewis Hamilton had to give position back to Kimi Raikkonen, which he did. He then freely, and through driving skill alone got position one back."
