Guys my Sony DVD Writer (DRU-720A) conked off completely.....I am planning to buy a new drive. I would like to know which drive to go for and their approximate price in Mumbai....(Suggest a shop if possible)......I don't want to go for a Sony drive....I have completely lost faith in Sony writers after me and 3 of my friends faced the same problem with our drives (....The problem:- The CD-R writing/reading function stopped working....that too exactly one month after the expiry of the warranty....stupid f***ers)...
Guys its urgent.....There is lot of data on my hard drive and a backup has to be taken as soon as possible....
Thnx in advance...

LG has been the most stable & long living in past 3 years of Optical Drives. Sony is worst, Samsung not good but service is fine, & much touted Lite-On goes bad in 3-4 months. This is my experience out of may be 150-200 drives i sold over past 3 years so someone lucky with those 1 or 2 drives may sit back with his opinion. Pioneer used to be good but availability is always an issue for it.

Just bought OEM LG-H10A on tuesday from lamington road for 1950/- !!

Upgraded the firmware to the latest from ther site.. (the utility comes bundled on the cd itself !!)

Drive seems to be stable until know !

the sony dru 810 was a gud drive
as far as longevity goes pioneer n plextor r the best

I got a Sony 810A

I have written over 1000 DVD and 1500 CD's on it I have been using it for past 10 months and it works like a charm no errors so far (touch wood)

I still suggest you give Sony another go

jus for info scarezebra..was it sony box pack or loose one........i have feeling loose one r not original sony but oem ones........correct me if i m wrong......

LG H10N Box Packed bought a few hours ago :D. (Rs. 2050)

All other box packed ones are Rs. 2500 or more. Except Lite-On boxed pack, which was for Rs.2150.

In OEM, the Sony DRU 820 was for Rs. 2150.

LG H10N. I got the retail box for 2k.

Agreed about LG drives. I have an LG CDRW 32x. Its currently in my 4800+ rig, and I value it more than all my DVD burners together. Has burnt more than 2000 CD's, still reads every one without fail. Cleaned it only 3 times so far.

It was the box back.....I had written hardly 5-75 DVDs.....I had hardly written any CDs.....But the piece of crap(the writer) died after exactly 13 months....

Well all those who have SONY drives and have survived the writing of more DVDs are serioulsy lucky....

After going thru all the opinions I guess LG is the best option...
BTW can ne1 tell me whats the difference between the LG GSAH10A and LG GSAH10N.. Are they both priced the same.....?

Well i just enquired this evening, the LG H10N was for Rs. 2050, while H10A was for Rs. 2150. But the difference may be because i enquired from 2 different shops.
And the H10N was available only in black (they said it comes only in black :-s ).

AFAIK the H10N has DVD-RAM support, while H10A does not (it doesn't say on the box), but please confirm this from the LG website.

I checked on the LG site, both drives have DVD RAM support.....I think the only difference between the two is the colour, one is black and the other is white..cos i couldn't find any other difference between the two....
comparison chart

Difference is in the DVD RAM Write speed.
its 5X for H10A and 12X for H10N.
So the H10N is better and shud be costlier............tho i have no idea y its 100Rs cheaper than H10A.
:)

Lite-On is the best so far imho . i have been using an LDW 451S , a primary SL DVD RW . i have flashed it to support DL burning .for over 2 years without any issues .

see if this is available

Lite-On SHM-165P6S . good reviews . review @ CDFREAKS
