The early termination fee is waived off and the contract becomes null & void if you are leaving the country. This is true for AT&T. For others I am not sure.

AT&T even provides unlock codes for phones that can be unlocked by codes, if you show them that you are leaving the country.

Of course if you live in the country & do not pay your dues, it goes into your credit history and then one fine day the debt recovery guys/lawyers letters are at your doorstep.
