Eight persons are reported to have been killed and 40 others injured in a suspected bomb blast in the well-known German bakery of Pune, which is often frequented by foreigners visiting Pune. The city also reportedly has a Chabad House, a Jewish cultural-cum-religious centre. Further details as to whether it was an act of terrorism, what kind of explosive was used etc are awaited.

2. Pune as a possible centre for jihadi activities came to notice in March 2002, when Abu Zubaidah, the then No.3 to Osama bin Laden, was arrested by the Pakistani authorities acting at the instance of the USA's Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI), in the house of an activist of the Lashkar-e-Toiba (LET) at Faislabad in Pakistani Punjab and handed over to the FBI. He is now in the Guantanamo Bay Detention Centre in Cuba. Sections of the Pakistani media had reported at that time that Abu Zubaidah, a Palestinian, had studied computer science in Pune before crossing over into Pakistan and joining Al Qaeda.

3.In September-October,2008, the Mumbai Police had arrested four IT-savvy members of the Indian Mujahideen ( IM), who had played a role in sending E-mail messages in the name of the IM before and after the Ahmedabad blasts of July,2008, and before the New Delhi blasts of September,2008, by hacking into Wi-fi networks in Mumbai and Navin Mumbai. Three of them were from Pune. The four persons were:

* Mohammed Mansoor Asgar Peerbhoy aka Munawar aka Mannu. A 31-year-old resident of Pune, who was allegedly working for an American Internet company in its India office as a well-paid executive.
* Mubin Kadar Shaikh, a 24-year-old graduate of computer science from Pune.
* Asif Bashir Shaikh, a 22-year-old mechanical engineer from Pune. In addition to helping in sending the E-mail messages, he also reportedly played a role in planting 18 Improvised Explosive Devices (IEDs) in Surat, all of which failed to explode.
* Mohammed Ismail Chaudhary, a 28-year-old computer mechanic, who is also suspected to have helped in planting the IEDs in Surat.

4. Peerbhoy was reported to have joined the IM while he was studying Arabic in Pune's Quran Foundation, which seems to have served as a favourite recruiting ground for jihadi terrorism. In this connection, reference is invited to my note titled INDIA AS POSSIBLE WEB OF CYBER TERRORISM at India as Possible Web of Cyber Terrorism-International Terrorism Monitor- Paper No. 454

5. Pune and its Chabad House again figured prominently in recent media reports of the visits to India by David Coleman Headley of the Chicago cell of the LET presently facing trial in Chicago on charges of helping the LET in carrying out the 26/11 terrorist strikes in Mumbai by collecting operational details about the targets to be attacked. Pune was one of the places reportedly visited by him for allegedly collecting target information for the LET. ( 13-2-10)

And so the cycle begins.

Terrorists attack, we blame the Pakis, they dont do anything, we go crying to Uncle Sam, the Pakis get a rap on their knuckles from Uncle Sam and one year later, we losers go and try to make peace with the pakis.

Then repeat.

yea, rinse and repeat.

it must be very hard to track these small scale terrorists... i hope the indian officials can come up with a good counter-terrorism strategy at such guerilla levels. already india is turning into a "police state" - who knows if they start raiding places, monitoring people and communications (eavesdropping etc) which im sure they already do for things like phones - they might add video surveillance if only we didn't have power shortages.

i guess pune-ites will get first-hand experience now about things like "dont touch unattended items", very sorry for the dead/injured and family especially that waiter who went to open the item etc.

We need to now tell people that hating Pakistani people is obviously not the way. We should play more sports and games with them, Ask prominent celebrities to talk about indo-pak ties and resume peace talks. This seems like a sure way to win Pakistani hearts as well as long lasting peace...

Why to win Pak hearts ? :S Have we done very wrongs with Pak ? :S Really pathetic, ridiculous and extremely poor views :ohyeah:

This is what happens when the police and the stupid maha govt's top priority is guarding silly movies starring shah rukh khan instead of protecting common people

Latest figures of casualties in Pune blast: 9 killed, including 5 women and 2 foreigners; 45 injured.

Bomb blast occurred at Pune's famous German bakery around 7:30 pm, when a waiter tried to open an unattended bag.

It's a terror attack. David Headley did recce of blast site: Union Home Secretary

Anti-terror squad in Pune to probe bakery bomb blast.

When is this insanity going to stop? If our stupid govt doesnt make good examples of ppl like Ajmal Kasab and carry on with the daily courtroom circus thats been going on since he was caught....incidents like these will always be around the corner.....

I hope all the countries unite and wipe out the terrorist shitholes within Af-Pak & our dear India.

Not that I want to be a part of this movement and not that I dont feel sad for what happened, but why assume it was pakis. Why not assume it was some group of people who bore hatred towards the German Bakery itself. I mean who knows who did but you cant just pointing fingers at every other person you see.

relax dude. they can't protect each and every citizen everyday... and they must be flooded with "intelligence reports" of activity here and there. they can't be at all places at all times. its like the famous logistical quote: "we need to be lucky/present everytime/everywhere to be successful in defending against terrorism. the terrorists only need to get lucky once" - i forget who said that...(prolly some US official after 911)

but india should talk and may be help to dismantle the terror camps

Wat to talk now......Plz

F&*k those who are resp.....

(please give me the commanding power)

Can't take this anymore..cant cant cant...

@ultimabasher
Because people who hate other people do not get back with IED blasts. These explosives are brought from across the border. Indian army keeps track of every pound of IED it makes. That is how shrikant purohit was caught. This was obviously done by indians but the resources and funding came from across the border.

another thing - we of course hear of these terrorism events when they happen and they're splashed across the news - but we pretty much never hear of the successes the officials have in catching and preventing attacks - im sure there have been many such successes - but they cannot brag/publicise so as to not lose that intelligence advantage against the enemy.
