Hi guys. I've almost decided to go for EVDO as there's no other true unlimited wireless plans available these days. I have a few queries,

1. Can I get a demo of speed at my place ?
2. What is the average speed ? From the chennai telephones site, I found that my nearest tower is about 1.5km from my house.
3. Can I pay the bill online ?
4. What other charges I have to pay other than the device price ?
5. I'm guessing I will get the connection on day 1, am I right ?

Thanks in advance :)

Yes bill can be paid online

BSNL Portal -- Landline Bill payments,Cellone bill payments,Mobile recharge/topup-- CDMA/WLL/NIC/EVDO Login Page

150 monthly + service tax extra for static id

2 hours connection ready in hand

Had own modem Sprint 595u

Paid activation fees 500 bucks
Thanks mate. Recently, BSNL reduced the modem price to 1820/- incl VAT. Do you suggest I can get better modem in the market at the same price ?

And yeah, do you mean kbps or kBps ? Also, how far is the tower from you ?

^ You mean KBps right?

Do they provide RUIM based connections now?

Well you got it right

i dont know how far is tower , was getting good speeds so didnt check

I would recommend getting modem from market

First check from BSNL which modem they are giving .

RUIM or NON RUIM

BSNL NON RUIM ZTE based is slower so avoid that modem

If you are purchasing i recommend check good one from ebay.com or amazon

Our latest is their obsolete so you can get really good deals on good modems there

US modem will be generally NON RUIM based

BSNL micromax and capital are RUIM based okay moodems

no personal experience though

just hit 300 KBps for few seconds

EVDO rocks for me

Torrentleech file in utorrent

signal strength -64 dBM

^ Great. Will get it tomorrow itself then. I already have a Tata Photon+ EVDO modem ( ZTE 8710 ) which seem to accept RUIM cards fine. ( Tried a Reliance RUIM and it worked fine )

The PrePaid option seems to be good, there is a Rs 350 as activation charges but you get Rs 399 talk value in the sim, recharge for another Rs 390 and can enjoy one month access.

Btw in which area in Chennai are you using EVDO? And how many signal bars do you get?

^ Sorry, my bad. :ashamed: Assumed you are from Chennai.

Anyway I will try and get a connection tomorrow. You just need to visit any BSNL Customer Service Centre right?

Sabby, apologies for the thread-jack, but I would reach a similar situation by the month-end when the BSNL 3G 4200UL expires. This might prove useful for me.

What all documents do we need to produce for an EVDO connection? Is this as easy as getting the 3G connection? Varkey, please keep us posted on the process and how it goes. I do have a BSNL customer service centre close by.

If we were to buy an EVDO modem from outside, how could we go about configuring it? Is this something similar to the 3G connection? Like inserting the SIM and then the rest of the processes? Apologies for the queries. Please help a noob! :ashamed:

EVDO connection requires PAN card and address proof photostat + one photo

evdo activated in 2-3 hours

RUIM bases EVDO cards are same as 3G sim

just pop into it , whether RIM/BSNL?TATA

card should be unlocked onces

NON RUIM bases are programmable cards

old stock of ZTE in BSNL

also available on ebay.in and ebay.com

Thanks kuduku/thatashok.

Address-proof is something I do not have here. Been wanting to renew that passport for ages but just couldn't. I think I'll rely on a friend of mine to get me the connection.

As for the EVDO Card, I am assuming the RUIM based card should be better going by your posts. And I should be banking on an unlocked one if I am sourcing it from ebay or elsewhere?

getting an unlocked one is the best idea

Best card depends upon your choice and preference

Got a sierra williams 595u from ebay.com

It had the best reviews for pure speed

has a 380mAh battery in it to give it more juice in pulling signal

Its big bulky keeping present standards but the topper in all reviews for speed

Size doent matter for a downloader its the thrill of speed which counts

Earlier BSNL and other companies used to give Y cable with data cards

so that the data card could draw more power

now cost cutting even that has stopped

So get a good datacard with external antenna support

on a side note @gannu , if we have copy of rent pay , it can be used as address proof , sometime it works if we have some backdoor settings with varification party . Generally BSNL appoint 1 agency for such that , if you tell them u work & no 1 other than u can be found @ address , they will provide u agency contact .

and BSNL don't have EVDO cards right now in stock as CSC aunty told me " arrey bhai 3G latest hai , fast hai - get it now " :S

Well guys now i intend using my Palm Pixi plus for my BSNL EVDO connection

have programmed it

now just have to go exchange to get the esn registered

Any one here with BSNL EVDO can confirm whether we can make voice calls with it ???

SMS can be sent this i am aware

Asked BSNL guy who programmes the Modem but he was also not aware

New modem cost 2500 and pixi cost 3000

but pixi gives advantage of voice calls if available and

most important app will be hotspot or the freetether so that i can wirelessly share my EVDO

Have only laptops at home so will utilize the WIFI

I know battery will get spoiled so orders a cheap battery to use from ebay

will keep original battery separate and safe for future mobile usage of pixi

Will search for the best signal spot , leave it for charging and enjoy unlimited internet

Was using BSNL 1x with pixi earlier now tinkering with EVDO

I think instead of modem Palm PIXI would be better idea for BSNL EVDO atleast

You get a 8GB EVDO touchscreen phone
