@Gannu, no problem mate :)

@kuduku, thanks a lot for the info. Could you please suggest some unlocked EVDO modems from ebay india (preferably within 2k) ? I'm pretty much noob about these EVDO modems.

i got confused at the links you posted.

need to read with fresh mind,

but its bit tough for me.

yes its tough but not that hard also :):)
I didnt read in detail but these guys are the ultimate in mobile and datacard unlocking
They made the CDMA workshop ....
I cant commit on the unlock but this is the process
You can try your luck
I havent unlocked or seen this MIFI so cant comment about actual procedure
but 23$ is real cheap for this device
Just check the battery of this
What is the seller giving new , used or reburbished ?

Varkey is going to use his tata photon plus, his device came unlocked actually and he also used CDMA workshop to get RUIM access. This was from yesterday chat with him.

Are those EVDO cards being retailed by BSNL that bad? Varkey what is your take dude?

As kuduku said, BSNL is giving 3 types of modems depending on availability.

1. ZTE 8700 - This is the oldest modem, Rev 0 so not at all recommended.

2. Micromax MMX 300 C - This is a RUIM based modem. Some bug reported here, but seems to be OK.

3. Capitel CE 200 - RUIM Based, Rev A

So these are the options, and if you can get a much better modem from elsewhere for almost the same price or even cheaper I would definitely go with that. The Sierra 595U that kuduku is having seems to be a great modem. Has an inbuilt battery to improve the transmission power at low signal areas as well. The reviews say it was the fastest of the modems tested at that time.

The 595U bested the competition on the greatest number of download tests of any single card—17 out of 40—with the highest average download speed at 773 kilobits per second (Kbps) and peaks at 1.56 Mbps. It nearly tied for fastest upload speed, too, averaging 419 Kbps and peaking at 736 Kbps. And, though only by a nose, it was best on our weak-signal test. That makes it the fastest modem we tested in this round of Verizon devices.

Yep I am going to try it with my ZTE 8710 which is a Rev A modem. I will be going to the CSC (Again!) today and will check what all modems are available and report back.

Went to the CSC in Cochin today but they didn't have stock of any EVDO modem. They said they can arrange refurbished ZTE Modems (They didn't know the model, might be the 8700 Rev 0 one) for Rs 2500 with one year warranty.

Anyway since I said I have my own device, they didn't know what to do. I asked them to just issue a RUIM card and I will do the rest but they were not aware of anything like that.

Anyway they gave the contact number of the main person incharge of EVDO in Cochin. He was very helpful and said that I can visit him tomorrow, test it out properly, check if my modem etc is fine and then take the connection. He seems to aware of all the details etc so I will meet him tomorrow and find out more.

All Evdo users should try the external antenna

It makes a hell of a difference

Get the pigtail from local market which will not be available i am sure

so get it from ebay.com

Go to BSNl office and try to get a Patch antenna by paying money or any means

it works awesome

was using it some time back

it will get an improvement of 20-30% or even 40-50%

If not available get a yagi or patch antenna from dealextreme for $12-15

If you dont find a good 1900 MHz antenna dont worry get a 2.4GHz antenna

they will do the work

very little difference it makes

like

$15.80 - 2.4GHz 16dBi Directional High Gain 16-Unit Antenna for Wifi/Wireless Network (RP-SMA) - Networking

$12.26 - 2.4GHz 15~18dBi Directional High Gain 13-Unit Antenna for Wifi/Wireless Network (N Female) - Networking

or

$13.60 - 1710~2170Mhz 12dBi Directional High Gain 7-Unit Antenna for 3G Wireless Network (SMA Female) - Networking

And for all those who think 2.4GHz will not make any difference please read/google before commenting

BSNL EVDO rocks for me all the way
Till now i have not used any external antenna or anything
Modem lying on window pelmet

^^ Could you please check how far is the tower from you ? We could get an idea of how much speed we can get. :)

Sabby, dude could we lend some help from kuduku/varkey to source this modem and unlock it? Seems like the investment may be worth it. What say? :)

Kuduku : The speed seems really good for EVDO. :-D

Anyway I had met the guy in Cochin incharge of EVDO and he says the speed they guarantee is only 200-300 kbps. :-( After hearing that I lost interest in it. He says at night it may go up to 600kbps or so and the speed fully depends on the users in your area and distance from tower.

So make sure the tower is nearby and luckily if you have less users in your area you will get good speeds.

Anyway those who are planning to get the modem, the Sierra one kuduku has seems really good. But before that check with the BSNL guys if they'll allow to use a foreign device. You will need their cooperation even if you want to configure the modem yourself.

Dang! I just spoke to medpal since he is using EVDO for quite sometime now. He says the upload speeds are pathetic. Like ~40kBps. I would need upload speeds to maintain the ratios. So this doesn't seem an option for me. :-(

I think that is pretty much evident from kuduku's screenshots as well. Look at the upload speeds.
