Cheapest option to watch movies stored on Ext HDD

Hello

I want to watch movies which are stored on my external HDD 2TB on my TV
The movies have all sorts of extensions including .avi
I also want to have the option of adding subtitles .srt

Whats is my cheapest option which is also durable.
There are several smart boxes on sale around 2.5k to 3k for sale on Ebay but dont know if they are reliable in the long run.
I bought a chromecast, but cannot use that because it doesn't support .avi format.
What are my other options other then the WD Live costing around 8K ?

Have you considered Teewe 2? It supports various formats including .avi. The desktop app for Teewe supports subtitles too. I guess for offline content, right now this is the best option.
 
Tell us a little about your TV,what does it support?
If it supports WiFi,then you can create a DLNA Media server and stream/share.
 
Asus O Play Mini or higher version in the series.

Not sure about current prices but plays almost all formats, with subtitles in various formats... (can force subtitles)... has optical out for 5.1 DTS.

Serving my purpose since 2011.

I have the Teewe 2 but there are some issues with it.
1)Only supports 2.4 GHz band which creates issues for me with 1080p Yify prints
2)You would need a 300 Mbps router and a PC/Handheld to stream videos over Teewe.
3)Cannot play x265 HEVC videos and most of my TV series are now in HEVC format to save space.

If you are okay with no support for HEVC then O Play mini is the best way to go.

I got the Teewe 2 to stop using my WDTV Live but I am seeing firsthand that the WDTV experience is far better.

I got the WDTV as this has LAN+Wifi support and it is hooked up to my file server's(Running Win 8.1) shared drive via Ethernet for accessing movies.

Choice now between a WD live and ASus O play mini

Getting. A 3 year old WD live for 3K or a brand new ASus O play mini for 4k

Which makes better sense?

Also will both support a 2 TB WD elements external hdd ?

I think X265 equipped device is a must at this point of time which is next popular codec - I'm using Oplay Mini since it released (around 2010-11) but currently stooped using due to lack of HEVC (x265) support...

Else Mini is a very good player.

WDTV live will be better just because of wifi+LAN support.
 
Go for any of two WDTV or O mini...

O mini supports 3 tb external power HDDs, guess same will be with WDTV.

Custom firmwares are available for both of them.
 
Buy Sony Network Blu-ray player S1200 @ 6k

It supports various formats, has USB port for connecting ext HDD.

Has a remote control and you can use your Android mobile device to cast.

Has YouTube and Opera app support so various channels akin to Kodi can be accessed, including internet radio.
Most importantly it gives 5.1 audio output.

And of course it plays DVD and Blu-ray too. I sold my RPI 2 after buying this.

Cons : Slow interface
Only wired Lan, no wireless.
No KB, mouse support.

If you get Samsung HD6500 Blu-ray player @10k, it has WiFi and has faster interface.

I don't understand why you need a dedicated media player when Blu-ray player can read attached HDD.

This would have been a good option but i want the option to add a separately available .srt file when playing a video.
I dont think this player gives that option.
