Did my PS3 just bum out on me?

I was merrily playing Resistance: FOM today morning. Paused the game for sometime and switched to my PC display to check out how many levels were remaining in the guide. Switched back to my HDMI display mode and BAM, I'm present with a total black out. No display whatsoever.

Switched off the PS3, turned it back on, no go. Tried removing the HDMI cable, re-connecting it, still nothing. Tried a video reset from an online guide (not sure if I did it right), still nothing. Now what in the world suddenly went wrong with this f*ckin' console? :@

Any suggestions? I'm off to work right now and this has pissed me off royally. For those who are not aware, the console is connected to an HDMI hub and eventually to my Dell S2409W monitor. It's the Slim 120GB console.

Few quick pointers:

1. Connect the HDMI cable directly without the hub. Sometimes the hub acts up. It is just another cheap Chinese device.

2. Connect a different HDMI cable. Use the one from your X360.

3. Try the VGA cable and use the composite video out to your TV.

4. Relax. After all, the console is under warranty. Backup the contents to another hard drive. At least the save data for the games you have been playing. :)

If all else fails, do a factory reset (to nullify the changes you have to done to JB the console) and take it to a Sony service centre. Damn, this sucks!

The HUB is working fine. I booted my 360 just to double check and it was able to bring up the display. So we can cross out the monitor, HDMI HUB and it's ports. My doubt is now leaning towards the HDMI cable, which is the el cheapo make I ordered last year from KMD. I should have tried that before coming to work. So I haven't tried the HDMI cable change and the composite connection. Assuming, both of these fail, it's the console for sure. That means I'll have 2 dead Sony products, which I need to replace. GREAT!

It seems the console is booting fine, as I can see the HDD light blinking. I can also switch off the console via my controller, that means the XMB has loaded up. I hope it's not the console.

Dinjo, I tried without the dongle as well. It didn't seem to make any difference.

The Console Auto Detects the Displa Signal Type. Sometimes this doesnt work Properly and instead of HDMI it selects the Composite TV Out. Happened with me once before so i just connected the Console to the TV. After that it was back to the normal. Just try this once.

That's odd. Does it happen right in the middle of a gaming session? I'll try to get it connected to my CRT TV once I get back.

Final check would be to connect PS3 to CRT TV using RGB Cables to check display is working

Allwyn bypass the hub and connect the hdmi cable directly to the display for once. Did you do this?

And 2 dead Sony products? Which was the previous one?

My Digicam. I didn't connect the cable directly to my monitor yet. I'll have to try all that when I get back home. It's frustrating enough that it did this before leaving for work. :(

Aw that sucks Ethan, but as Desecrator said your PS3 is under warranty, so thank god you're covered. But again i hope nothing has happened cause if it does sony india takes nearly about 1 month to replace it :'(

Sorry to hear that,,,hope it clears out fine,,,

Even it had happened with me twice that the display settings reset itself when i switch on the PS3 in the JB mode,,,then i again i have to setup everything,,,

In your case too I feel the same has happened ,,,may b it is not looking for the HDMI,,,but how in the middle of the game,,,???:S

Sad update part 1: My brother just tried connecting the other HDMI cable to it and got the same result. :(

Quick question, if the console does come up with the display using the composite cables on my SDTV, what setting do I have to toggle to get it working again on the monitor?

Sujit, how did you reset your console? Why am I learning about his now? Is this a known issue or something?

Damn that sucks. Did he try bypassing the hub and connecting the cable to the LCD directly?

Yeah, you should try to connect your ps3 to your crt tv and then see what happens. The ps3 can detect itself and can change its settings,if it is connected to crt tv or an HDTV.

If it works on CRT TV then just connect via HDMI, switch on monitor and then do a reset again on console and it will pickup Digital Signal

I guess that's my last hope now. Also can someone quickly run me through the correct reset procedure?

@Gannu: No, he did not connect it directly. I'm pretty sure, it won't make much of a difference.

Worth a shot though.

Hold Power button down for two beeps (while PS3 is off): Reset video to lowest settings.

PlayStation 3 Secrets

Taken from web

Turn off the power to your PS3 and then turn it back on again. But when you turn it on, hold down the power button until you see something on the screen. When you hold down the power button of the PS3 when you are turning it on, it completely resets the video settings to the most basic settings so that it'll work on any TV or monitor.

Just long press the power button ,,,and u will hear two beeps...and the video settings will get reset,,,,:)

Then choose which display u want from the options available....

Actually I learnt about it when I accidently pressed the power button for long duration when Jailbreaking,,,,,:)

Somewhat good news update 1: Connected it via the composite cable and BOOM, I'm back in action. Will try to switch back to HDMI and see if it works again.

*fingers crossed*
