Did quite a few purchases past two weeks. Noticed a trend on most seller/item pages. They strictly mention not to give "negative/neutral" ratings.

Example:

Please contact us before leaving any NEGATIVE/NEUTRAL comments on Ebay site . All our items are covered under Full refund / Replacement policy, immediately contact us on our Email id / Phone number as given below if you have any issues with quality of our item or our service, we will resolve your issue as soon as possible to your satisfaction.

We request you to give a DSR 5 for all parameters. If you feel we should not get a DSR 5 please let us know before giving the feedback. Please send your suggestions and feedbacks at ***********.We will take your valuable inputs and incorporate it into our system.
For some of the purchases I got a separate -- welcome package type letter stating the same and requesting/begging/ordering not to give anything below 5*, electronic form and/or attached to the hard copy bill invoice. Why is this so prevalent. Of course the feedback rating is the prime indicator of a sellers credibility -- but requesting highest grade feedback and best-of-the-best vendor promotion is a bit below the belt. Is it because buyers were not giving correct ratings, or actually the truth is surfacing and sellers are scared, or just a hush hush job.

Subsequently I read some negative feedback for sellers. Most of the replies from the shops were -- "why did you give negative, not true, you should contact us first". Does not this defeat the whole mechanism of constructive feedback..?

I think people treat negative feedback as the sellers as selling duplicate items or that they dupe their customers. That or also the paisa pay system releases their money a bit late .
All that adds to their reputation to be a power seller i suppose. :S

^^ Yup. I'd definitely think twice before getting something from a seller with say over 5% negative feedback. Though, I'd rate the seller a bit lower on the 5-star scale just for asking to give a perfect rating :D

IINW, the sellers will have restrictions to their accounts if their ratings fall beyond a certain average. I think this cutoff average is quite high, something like less than 4.1 average ratings means restrictions. Prolly the reason why most sellers beg for or demand mandatory 5 star ratings.

AFAIK if it falls below 95% then many privileges are automatically withdrawn, one of them being release of payment after providing shipping details.

I welcome to be corrected from a regular ebay powerseller.

I had got a xbox controller from a ebay seller who had over 1k rating, few were negative. There was no bill and the box was cracked and lot of dust was on the controller. I mentioned the same and left a neutral feedback. The seller started calling me daily and asked me to send a mail to him stating that i left a neutral feedback by mistake. At one point he got emotional telling me that his family depends on this business and ebay would cancel his account if i didn't send the mail. I ignored him for few days, but couldn't take his pestering anymore and sent him a mail. But i guess i was too late. His account was already disabled.

eBay is hell for the sellers now. It's all about the buyers now. To make Indian customers comfortable with the idea of buying online, buyers are given all the power.

If any of you remember feedback/ratings given at Baazee (before it was bought by eBay) or even other portals like Rediff/Indiatimes shopping, you would understand how people just give any rating they want. I've seen -ve ratings with comments like, " I don't like it", "Blue color would have looked better" and what not!

Rather than harming other people, it is much more beneficial for the buyer that the online store wants to maintain his 100% rating. It automatically means better service for us buyers! I remember when I had ordered a bookset from a seller and he sold the last set the day I ordered. He used to contact me everyday updating me on the status. And when he couldn't procure it from another place, he refunded me on the 6th day.

All in all, I love being the buyer now. :D

hardly matter with -ve against sellers even when they are wrong and if buyer give -ve they later go to community court and got there -ve reversed to postive by some bla bla theory and this happened with as many as seller i gave -ve ratings due to vaild reason

Stumbled upon this in one of the sellers' instructions:

ebay_dsr.gif

Seems the average feedback they need is much more than I thought.

^^

That 4.3* mandate pretty well sums up the desperation...! :) Imagine a dealer/seller starting a new venture (not a one off sale) but a large scale business. Easy to receive disgruntled scores or heck...even neutral scores. They really need mostly 5's and worst case 4's to keep running.

Intense must say. Will change the philosophy of the usual Indian style of selling...!

You sure of this. You actually saw your -ve rating gone from the display..?

^ absolutely correct.

i think seller should not ask for the ratings & feedback.

what i think is they should provide their best service as they could like shipping the item next day of purchase, using good courier company & so on.

i recently bought a desrie HD from here, though i bought the item Saturday morning at about 10 AM,the seller was supposed to ship it on Monday at max.

instead he shipped it today,i did mailed him first on Monday but he didn't replied so i called him on Tuesday & he was giving improper reasons,he said he used to ship via FedEx but in the recent times their service was not upto the mark so he has opened a new account with bluedart & he will ship it on Thursday.

then i asked him that he has sold 13 phones from the same listing & how much has he shipped to which he replied 7 :S. Strange as he said he doesn't have any shipping service as of now.

what i think is these guyz create online listings & sell expensive products on Back to Back basis, basically what i feel is he ran out of stock for the phone & was waiting for the stock to arrive.

not a good experience for me. :(

happened with me also once. I had ordered a screen guard for a mobile, and he shipped a different model scratch guard. I asked him to replace that as it was his fault. He was ready to do that, but he wanted me to ship the screen guard back at my own cost.

Me did it, and he then wanted a payment of 50 bucks more for his payment of shipping cost to new piece. I demanded a refund, and he said, i cant give that, which caused a whole lot of dispute. In the end i got the money back less 100 bucks via NEFT
I gave the seller a negative feedback. Now the seller filed a case in the community court stating I had demanded two screen gaurds at the price of one and when he said no, i gave him negative feedback. I stated back my argument including the shipping link, the photo of scratch gaurd with my phone.

Somehow the community court voted 60% in his favour and the negative feedback disappeared.

For reference the seller is this one eBay My World - goodquiltypromise

Even his other goods are not the the original product.

eBay India: ORIGINAL HTC CARRY CASE POUCH FOR DESIRE (item 120657318895 end time 08-Dec-2010 20:55:10 IST) hardly seem to be the original one. I asked him, he said it is not original, but still it will feel like original as long you dont put it next to original :P

^^
Which is quite bad.

1. He asking for shipping for the 2nd item.
2. He getting his -ve rating revoked --- though how just is the EBay court. How you get to know the proceedings, do they keep you updated on the case...?

I had a decent experience with 3G-Guy. They sent a 3G+LAN modem, which did not work with my modem. For 6-7 days they sent me methods to trouble shoot. In the end they suggested a replacement to the same, or a different model. I shipped back the non-working unit and asked for the different model (had not checked the price). The new one worked just fine...! I later on checked the price, and realized it is around 500 rupees more than what I transacted on EBay. I asked the dealer if he needs the difference from me. Got a polite "no need". :)

What I liked from this experience, constant mails to troubleshoot, 2x phone calls from one of their service managers, prompt courier back of new item, no extra amount charged.

Are there deals available where shipping has to be done 'next day' on Indian EBay..? Sorry for the ignorance but I never saw any such, though am just a small time EBay shopper..? :) What was the EBay shipping span quoted by the portal..?

till now I never had a terrible experience with any ebay seller (touch wood). in my case small mistakes on the part of seller or courier company has happened and for a few of them I just didn't leave any feedback. but I make note of sellers who consistently ship next day itself and have good quality products etc and also make note of those who don't. I have never left any negative or neutral feedback till now :D

for example sellers like 'veedeedirect' 'snrama' 'mark-infotech'(and some more also I can't recall id) they ship next day with proper bill and packing (YMMV) though their prices may be a bit on the higher side for some products. for small IT items I prefer local chennai sellers like 'eitmall' 'techstuff_in1' who ship promptly. and if it's a valuable item I first go through listings of our TE dealers and known sellers like primeabgb techshop.in smc etc and only if they don't have it or if it's considerably cheaper somewhere else I buy from other sellers.

even if the seller has recent negative or neutral feedback I take time to go through the feedback and also the feedback of the buyer who left the feedback. also sellers can easily be judged by their way of listing itself... like neately formatted details, informative title, clear warranty terms etc. some of them put a lot of effort but many do a very shoddy work in this area. even 'buygamingstuff' does not have a good listing/title etc.

The whole Ebay rating system is flawed! I wouldnt trust half the sellers on ebay.
Ordered a branded bag on ebay.in. Got a fake bag. Left the seller a negative feedback saying it was fake. Seller got the full payment as I marked item as received.
Next day seller goes to community court to get my negative feedback removed. I posted pics of the fake and the original for the jury members.
To summarize things, I lost the appeal here and the seller gets my negative feedback removed! More than 70% of the jury members are sellers on ebay and they support each other.

^^

Do they provide reasons why the -ve rating has been revoked. Is the jury member list available to customers at the time of a dispute..?

Just asking these questions for my own knowledge.

Why did you mark received ?. You should held it ,saying item not sent as described .

And assuming you receive the item and seller gets money and you give ratings , after all these ,if the item goes bad later ,its impossible to catch hold of the seller . I have experienced it several times .

Hi lxxxx,

Item Number: xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx

Feedback Content: doesnt look like the pic at all! Fake bag. Very misleading description

The Community Court has decided that the feedback for this transaction should be removed with a majority of 51% of the votes.

eBay TnS will be acting on this outcome shortly.

Thank you for your participation.

I didnt want to waste my time and energy for a mere 500 bux also If I wanted a refund I need to ship this junk bag back. Shipping a bag to somewhere north doesnt come cheap. Thought I could teach the seller a lesson and warn other buyers.
