Whats up with you guys suggesting the udac ? He wants a portable DAC/AMP !!!!

He hasnt really mentioned that he needs a portable amp . Since he was looking at the E7 ,I assumed he plans to use it as a DAC + amp primarily and not just amp ;). DACs anyways cant really be called portable as one would end up using it with a PC /laptop :P

Ah yes he wasn't very clear. :)

I derived he was looking for an AMP/DAC since he wanted a E7 which would have cost around the same as a uDAC which everybody seems to be recommending though many have not heard it !!! :P

Though Faheem and Viralbug have heard the udac and they seemed to really like over other DACs.

Its not very neutral sounding IMHO but I still like it.

Btw here is a review of the uDAC comparing it to other DACs -

^ Yeah its not like ruler flat neutral but not very coloured as well. Just a touch of warmth /mid bass hump :P I really liked it a lot cause it makes mY RE-0 sound heaven :D

Infact any headphone /can that is completely flat/neutral sounding or slightly dark will sound really good with the uDAC.

offtopic.

Whats the diff b/w a DAC , DAC/Amp /Amp ?

I guess DAV works as a sound card as well, but doesnt all DAVc have amplification ? or just the Amp/DAC has ?

Also does a DAC or DAC/Amp has better SQ than a good sound card with an avg amp, like the E5 ?

A DAC is a chip that essentially converts digital (1s and 0s) to analog signal (voltage/charge/current) which finally drives headphone drivers or speakers.

The Realtek chip on your motherboard is the DAC - it does not have an amplified output.

That is very similar to the Nuforce uDAC we are talking of here but this one has a better chip inside compared to the cheapo Realtek DAC.

Some DACs does come with an onboard pre-amplifier or amplifier for driving headphones with very high impedance such as the Beyerdynamic DT880 600Ohms/Senn HD650 300Ohms etc.

Amplifiers essentially takes up a huge real estate as well and the chips onboard generate a lot of heat so manufacturers generally try not to cramp them in a tiny standalone DAC. An AVR for instance, has a DAC and an amplifier but the space it takes up!

As for the SQ difference from a sound card and a DAC - that depends. For instance, the Xonar STX/ST has a good DAC+headphone amp onboard which can produce as good results as a standalone DAC. But that comes at a price!

IS there anything which works as a DAC/Amp through USB and can also be used as a portable AMP with AA/AAA/Li-ion batteries ? :)

And plz suggest... which would be better.

My current Auzentech HDA Xplosion + E5 or Porta III Corda Amp/DAC ? with headphones like ... say an SHP 9000 or later an HD 595 ?

Or will it be too powerful for the SHP 9000, which claims to be 32 Ohm. But actually it needs almost 2X power to drive compared to a Senn HD 201. Will it damage the headphone, ie too much power for the headphone to handle ?

Sorry OP to ask these here. Maybe this could be helpful for many others like me... who are confused b/w amp, dac, dac/amps and the likes. :)

The porta III will be lot better than an E5(E5 is just good for increasing gain/vlume with bass boost and doesn't really better the SQ).Also powerful amp wont kill/damage any low impedance headphones unless its one of those hi-power speaker amps .

Ive tried the SHP 9000 with BF1983s Porta III but have a very faint memory of it frankly speaking ..(I need to note down by auditioning thoughts/ notes now due to so much listening :|) .The Porta III could drive the SHP9000 pretty well. Not as good as my EF2A tube amp but yeah fairly well.

The 9000s sound pure bliss with the CV4010 mullard tubes on EF2A as it has a very dark sound signature and fuses well with bright sound of philips.

By the way coming to the E7 topic , the Fiio E7 seems to getting postivie reviews as well. Though ClieOS review showed the E7 as passable or decent DKFT(owner of anything-but-ipod) rates it as very VFM .

FiiO E7 Headphone Amplifier/USB DAC Review

Now only if someone sent me a review sample of E7 :ashamed: .

my god buddy you are loosing money by buying dac for ep630 and hp 805, ep 630 has very low impedence and high sensitivity, so amp dont work perfect with this iem and cause distortion second point is hp 805(32ohms) has very low impedence comparing with other headphones like philips 8900,9000 and other brands headphones.dac's perform only well with headphones like high impedence of about 64ohm or above ohms and low sensitivity, amp that best suits to you is fiio e5 or any good amps under 1k.if you dac for ep630 and hp805 it is like small needle to flow water from big tanks

buddy it just make the tank really bigger I mean amp+dac is strictly for high impedence and low sensitivity headphones. I am damn sure becasuse I have one dac+amp and it work worse even with pl11 and low impidence headphones please dont loose your mony, I think you have to hear it then only you can understand how bad it is, If you are relly crazy about dac+amp then also buy some excellent headphones around 10k and iem like re2,or nuforce ne6 if you dont believe me ask faheem about this.again ep630 is one of the bad earphones in market.

anyway, i'm getting a pretty sweet deal on a little something :P

And i might upgrade to better cans like you said ;)

@ ManuGeorge ,Dont worry about Greenhorn ,He very well knows what He needs and is better equipped with audio knowledge .

You never know , He might just surprise us with some elite cans and gear :D hehehe

actually, I'm quite rusty now:ashamed:, and what manu george is saying makes sense.

I would have followed his advice, except that I'm on a little spending spree before going broke for the next two years :D.

What He is saying is completely right but I have just assumed that you will be investing in better headphones in future :P. If not an amp +DAC for EP-630 really doesnt make sense.

then whats the solution for better SQ?

The ep630 makes the flaws of the realtek onboard quite obvious

the HP 805's sound quite dull and anaemic ( which is kinda solved when i play around with the eq, but it starts distorting when I pump it up)
