Front loading or top loading washing machine?

I think the stated weight capacity is dry.
But as you've found it isn't possible to put more than 4kg in the machine. That is four pairs of jeans and you would be overloading. The ISO thing I find unintuitive.
It might be true for LG, but my 7kg Samsung machine drum has diameter of 50cm. Outer tub diameter will be 55cm. That leave only 2.5 cm of wiggle room on either side. Meaning the drum is already as big as it could possibly get within the limit of 60cm machine width.
A belt-driven machine will be slightly bigger as there is no space lost with the direct drive.
My point was that, upto 10kg capacity, the same drum will be used. And this drum has the volumetric capacity of 4kg only.
It is not. There is a bigger size available with depth of 60 cm. It used to be the 8kg models 5 years back. Now they've increased it to 10kg. The difference is 10L more volume. The volume gain is bigger going from 45 to 55cm depth than it is adding 5cm more.
Machines higher than 10-11 kg are fatter too. They can have bigger drums and maybe these are used at commercial level. But machines between 7 to 11 kg are pure money grab products without any bigger tangible benefits.

The bedding program is limited to 2 KG only regardless of the total capacity of the machine.
I've always recommended plain jane white machines as I thought they were good enough for most. But if you want more features you will find these on the bigger models. They have to offer something to justify the price. Something like LG's Turbo 360 that claims to reduce wash time through better stain removal. I'll have to find one of Eugene's videos where he tests this. These new features take a while to appear in the Indian market. With other brands, there isn't that much to offer at the higher end.

If someone wanted the best top loader, the recommendation would be an LG with 6 motion. Starts at 35k.

You will get the best wash action with that machine compared to any other brand top loader in the market. So it's not a money grab by LG there.

In that case you should use another mode suitable for the material that you are loading.

The bedding program is there to only wash big but lightweight stuff like bedsheets or blankets. I was referring to what's commonly known as 'chaddar' .

And also these quilts, (I don't know what they're called in Hindi):

Some of those bad boys can reach 3-4kg on their own. They need to be washed with Cotton program.

Right, and you will only fit one of those in a 55L volume if you want a proper wash.

On the whirlpool top loader, there is a blankets program. The only one with the max water level.

Here is a demo with a 9.5kg IFB top loader and its blanket program. These top loaders are quite gentle for washing so stain removal is going to depend on your detergent more than wash action.

Not all machines get the bigger drums though. It's a rarity.
LG 10.5 KG , It's either typo or something.
WestingHouse 8.5 kg, Guess the drum capacity. :p

I guess you are right. Army blanks (the ones make you appreciate that you're alive) are heavy too.

After looking at whirlpool's top loaders and comparing it with others here is what is missing that I think is important

- lacks a fabric softener compartment. This is a good thing in that people won't use fabric softener which should be avoided if you don't want to deal with a smelly machine later. But it is bad because you can't add other additives like Dettol laundry sanitiser or citric acid to neutralise excess detergent. You can add it manually if you watch it like a hawk and drop it in just as the last rinse cycle begins which detracts from the 'fully automatic' description.

- can't tweak anything. If you want an extra rinse then you have to run the rinse+spin program after the wash completes. Again, requiring manual intervention. Sammy, LG, IFB allow doing this when setting the program.

If a whirlpool model comes out that allows the above that it could be considered.

How much is the depth of your drum?

This figure you can only get by manually measuring as it's not stated anywhere

Drum depth 20 cm - volume 36L
Drum depth 30 cm - volume 54L
Drum depth 33 cm - volume 63L

Now the last of those machines used to be available five years ago.
Not all machines get the bigger drums though. It's a rarity.
LG 10.5 KG , It's either typo or something.
It is, that model has a depth of 56cm

I guess the volume won't be 63L then more like 54L

Same with @sriharsha_m 's washer dryer. Also 56cm depth

They have reduced the size of the washer dryers. But also the price is less at 65k

Five years back, the one below was retailing around 80k. Made in Korea.

When I was looking I measured this washer dryer's drum depth at 33cm

It was a bright red model and I was very interested in getting it.

dimension are 64W 60D 85H in cm

When you get the machine, first thing run the eco tub clean cycle with nothing and your normal water and watch it and then describe what it does in the linked thread above. How high the water goes and how long it takes
I started the ECO Tub Clean cycle and the water is filled till top. It is just few mm below the grey tub border.

Very good, can you measure the diameter of the drum and the height of the steel drum? and then the height up to the rim of the plastic.

in cm

This machine forces a tub clean every 40 wash cycles and there seems to be no way to bypass it accrding to this review but the manual says you can ignore it.

Found a video that shows wash action for this Samsung. Unfortunately, the guy overloads the machine. Fills it to the top. Why ? because its a 7kg machine so he must put what he thinks is 7Kg in it :bored:

3 double bed sheets
2 pillow covers
1 single bedsheet
2 pilow covers
1 shirt
1 pant

Overloading a top loader like this is bound to create problems sooner than later. The spring supports on the side are an easy fix. What is harder to fix is the axle will wobble as it gets more play. The machine will get noisier and shake more. I'm guessing about 5 years possibly sooner before fixes need to be made.

And the result is clear to see, the clothes just swirl around. There isn't much wash action with this machine. It's no better than a semi-automatic. Turns one way and then the other. If you expect any cleaning then fill no more than 50% and use the super clean cycle. The soak feature is likely mandatory with every wash as you don't have warm water. Nothing less than surf for top loader if you half expect to shift stains. Cheaper detergents have less active ingredients and will require more quantity which causes other problems.

Don't want to create a separate thread someone suggest me a top load machine max between 17-20k tight budget.
I have no early exp.

If you are spending 20k then you should buy a front loader. Samsung 7kg front loader is often available around that amount after bank discounts, exchange, super coin etc.

Space constraints hence top load.
Open for any brands as have no idea on anything and this thread looks quite promising. At home we mostly got samsung and lg appliances so if given a choice would prefer these brands.

check last few pages of this thread. You'll get good options.

what was your previous machine? or you never had one

I'd recommend a top loader with a heater for better cleaning

The 6.7kg i suspect has a smaller tub, best if you can see these in a shop

Otherwise, consider the IFB's here

LG & Samsung don't have any models with heaters that work like the above.

Well, there is a Samsung model with a heater but I can't find a manual and no review available as yet

@gopal_agrawal can you answer on the tub measurements ?

On the topic of Samsung front loader. This lady's Samsung is ten years old. Managed to catch the serial# and the manufacture date is Feb-2011 according to this guide

She says she is replacing it because the shocks are gone. Shocks are not an expensive fix but I guess she wanted the washer dryer combo she got after more. She also said it screams so the bearings are shot too. This is what happens if you spin at top speed. Maybe just under Rs.10k to repair I guess and the machine must have been 25k or more.

Point? ten years later and no broken spider ;) Now, if you somehow manage to kill yours in 5 years then something has changed.

One way to gauge spider strength is max spin speed. Faster spin means bigger holes requiring a better gauge of steel & stronger spider.

Her Samsung is an upper midrange 6kg, 1,200 rpm model from 2011.

Mine only gets up to 1000. Your Samsung can reach 1.200.

In theory, your spider is as strong as her model. Just don't go higher than 800 rpm for spin and your bearings will last longer.

This is her old machine. Depth is 51cm and interestingly they even mention the volume.

Jaya 6kg.jpg

The 7kg variant has the 55cm depth. But since Sammy's aren't direct drive the volume increase is modest.

Samsung 7kg.jpg

Another interesting thing about these 10yr old Sammy's is there is no calibration mode. Why is this mode needed in the new-gen Sammy's? what has changed ?

And this model has the 'rinse hold' feature under spin settings.

If she's pampering the machine like her baby then why not spend some monies to fix the dampeners?

Yup. We are use max RPM only when it's raining. Otherwise it's 800.

About bad spiders, I'm developing a theory, here me out. I think the biggest reason the spider's rusting is the usage of normal detergent. I don't think many people know there exist specialized detergents for front load washing machine. People must be using regular hand-wash detergent in front loaders. Hell, we used TL for a decede and we never knew specialized washing machine detergents exist. Most general stores don't keep front loader detergent. They even force customers to buy TL detergent for FL.

Because she wanted this at Rs.65k. Without a dryer is Rs.43k

I'm saying don't use max at all. It rains half the year at least where I am. Stick to 800 even when it rains. When the weather gets dryer towards March, drop to 400

You don't have a dryer that needs it that dry and even if you did its debatable how much more water faster spin gets out

The bearings in these machines are nowhere near top grade. The fastest speed will wear them out faster.

I've been saying the same thing for a while now :)

In addition, normal detergent foams more so it cushions the clothes and hinders cleaning. Too much foam in the machine will affect the bearing seals over time. Along with using top spin speed, this is how you kill the bearings on a Bosch within five years.

Most people will not get it. They think detergent is a detergent. Why pay more? It does the same thing. It matters even in a top loader. Using handwash detergent won't give you the best results if not affect the machine to the extent in a front loader. Though handwash and top load detergent can be hard to tell apart in wash results.

It isn't rusting more like disintegrating. If you took a hammer to it, it would crumble. That is how dire it can be at the extreme.

One thing I notice with Samsung and this applies even to their cheapest top loader is they allow up to 5 rinses if you want. Even her ten year old front loader had that. LG will only allow a max of three. Maybe more recent LG models allow more. Mine has a default of two. I can't add more rinses unless I use the 'medic rinse' modifier that does a warm third rinse.

Why do you need it? Usually don't recommend stands. They can increase vibration during a spin

The guys who come will force you to buy one. Makes it easier for them to wheel the machine from the living room to wherever.

Its a necessity as near water source I do not have place for keeping the machine. And LG said they do not sell nor recommend a stand so the demo guy wont be doing any of that.
Anyways, got one from Croma.
